It was another rainy morning in Round Rock, TX on the final day of the 2023 Rogue Invitational CrossFit competition. The second event of the day, “Big Cat,” was Event Eight overall and would play a big role in separating the pack in terms of the overall leaderboard. By the end of the event, Danielle Brandon and Victor Hoffer came away with the event win.
Conditions stayed wet following the soaked experience that was “Hulk Hands,” but the athletes were undeterred. Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr tore through the event, finishing second and saying in her post-heat interview that she’s ready to battle it out in the upcoming final event.

2023 Rogue Invitational CrossFit Event Eight — “Big Cat” Recap
The weather was still acting up during “Big Cat.” Once again, the women took the field first.
Women’s Division, Heat One
Accuracy would be key in this high-skills event under normal circumstances, and the rainy conditions certainly were not normal for these athletes. Danielle Brandon came to win, setting out ahead of the field consistently for the first couple of rounds. By the conclusion of Brandon’s second round, she was far ahead of the field, but clearly had her eyes on gaining ground on the overall leaderboard as she kept pushing her pace.
It was all about Brandon throughout the heat as she finished first, aiming for the event win to get into the top 10 overall, with Arielle Loewen and Paige Powers going relatively rep-for-rep behind her. Powers ultimately beat out Loewen for second in the heat.

Women’s Division, Heat Two
Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr, Emma Lawson, and Laura Horvath were the first women to the handstand walks, with Toomey-Orr leading the charge for the first couple of rounds. She opted not to put her hands on the box coming down from her jumps, which added major fatigue potential but gave her a few precious seconds of speed along the way.
The battle for third place between Emma Lawson and Gabriela Migala on the overall leaderboard was taking place next to the battle for first between Toomey-Orr and Horvath, with Migala and Lawson battling back and forth toward the top of the event.
But no one could catch Toomey-Orr, though Horvath kept her pushing her speed with a consistent second-place pace. Toomey-Orr crossed the finish line ahead of Horvath, who edged out Cary in a foot race by two-tenths of a second. Lawson pulled in ahead of Migala.

Men’s Division, Heat One
Victor Hoffer and Tudor Magda were the first to demonstrate their prowess with handstand walks, both blazing through the opening round of work quite quickly. Bayley Martin and Ricky Garard also started off at a solid clip, battling it out for third. Dallin Pepper rose into contention for that position, too, as the heat passed its midway point.
With a nine-minute time cap, the men were moving quickly to make sure they stayed in the positions they needed. At the end of the five rounds, Hoffer set the time to beat with the event win, with Magda and Pepper filling out the top three for the heat. Garard pulled into fourth.

Men’s Division, Heat Two
Brent Fikowski was first to the handstand walk, but many of the rest of the men were step-for-step with each other behind him, including Jeff Adler, Pat Vellner, and Roman Khrennikov.
As the rounds went on, Fikowski continued out front, shaking his arms out nice and relaxed by his sides every time he got to the opportunity to jog on his actual feet. Jay Crouch slowly crept his way up with consistent pacing, as other athletes slowed down somewhat. Crouch overtook Fikowski during round four, pulling away a substantial lead to start his last round.
Adler and Vellner continued side-by-side in their battle for third as Crouch sprinted over the finish line, aiming to finish inside the top 10 overall. Fikowski ran over the line second, followed by Adler and Ohlsen, who outpaced Vellner in a foot race to the finish.
