Powerlifter-turned-bodybuilder Larry Wheels sent shockwaves through the bodybuilding community by emerging victorious at his debut Classic Physique bodybuilding show, the 2023 NPC Ultimate Warriors. Wheels narrowly missed winning an IFBB Pro Card at the 2023 Amateur Olympia after scoring a silver medal.

Wheels remains committed to turning pro in the IFBB Pro League. On Dec. 22, 2023, Wheels published a video on his YouTube channel wherein he trained legs with Men’s Open bodybuilder Andrew Jacked. Check it out below:

Belt Squat

Jacked and Wheels warmed up via dynamic stretching. Standing over six feet tall, Jacked used a V-handle attachment during belt squats. A major benefit of the belt squat is relieving strain on the lower back. He maintained an upright torso to bias his glutes and quads

To maximize quad stimulation, the duo performed a triple drop set to failure on their final set. Training to failure can be more important for increasing muscle mass than total training volume when training with lighter loads. [1]

Leg Press

Jacked took a shoulder-width stance in the middle of the foot platform. He lowered the weight until his knees hit 90 degrees. Jacked avoided locking out his knees at the top to maintain constant tension on the target muscles.

Jacked revealed that the 2023 Olympia judges recommended adding size to the hamstrings and building more density and conditioning in the glutes.

Superset — Leg Extension & Lunges

After two compound exercises, the duo performed leg extensions to isolate their quads with a slow rep tempo.

Jacked performed bodyweight walking lunges via shorter steps without fully extending his knees at the top. Longer strides transfer the tension from the quads to the glutes and hamstrings.

Road Ahead

Jacked finished fifth at the 2023 Olympia, marking a three-place improvement from 2022. He is next scheduled to compete at the 2024 Arnold Classic, set for March 1-3 in Columbus, Ohio, where he will challenge the reigning champ Samson Dauda for the second-biggest prize purse in pro bodybuilding.
