Katilyn Runck grew up in North Dakota and the idea for health and fitness started in her teen years. She began her career as a runway model and finished high school by getting an online degree. Through constant stress and the continuous pressure to succeed, she struggled with mental health and her physical health began to decline as well. Realizing she needed to change, and that the runway model life was getting too dangerous for her, she realized what she needed to do and sought to make that change.
She began to focus heavily on nutrition, finding the right balance of her diet and fueling her workouts properly, giving her a much healthier and happier lifestyle. With a passion for fitness, nutrition, and helping others achieve their goals, she became a fitness coach and started her own fitness and lifestyle brand. Through this, she offers customized and personalized wellness, nutrition, and fitness plans so others can see the results they want to see most.
Kaitlyn is also a WBFF bodybuilding competitor in the Fitness Model division competing against the best for the top spot in top tier bodybuilding competitions.
Training
Kaitlyn’s training revolves around a host of methods that keep her figure toned and shredded. While her exercises tend to change in order to cause muscle confusion so she always sees growth, typically her reps are anywhere between 8-12 reps per set and she does around 3-5 sets per exercise. Her training is typically a 5 day split and she changes her routine up every four weeks.
Cardio for Kaitlyn typically revolves around when she has a show or photo shoot and it will consist of both HIIT work and longer, more steady state work. If it is the offseason, or no shoots to prepare for, she takes a break from cardio and focuses more so on lifting alone.
Nutrition
When it comes to nutrition, Kaitlyn follows the 80/20 rule, being that 80% of the time she eats healthy foods that fuel her body. These include anything from whole grains, protein, fruits, and veggies, and a host of other foods that give her the energy she needs inside and out of the gym. The 20% comes when she enjoys those foods that we all love. Finding the right balance is the best way to enjoy a healthy life while still having fun.

Adaptive Athlete Logan Aldridge Deadlifts 502 Pounds During 2021 CrossFit Games
Logan Aldridge put on a show during day one of the 2021 CrossFit Games.
Logan Aldridge can be viewed as motivation and an inspiration to many in all walks of life. On Tuesday during the 2021 CrossFit Games at the Allianz Energy Center in Madison, WI, Aldridge continued to show his incredible strength by performing a 502-pound deadlift as part of the Adaptive Division.
Aldridge, who is missing most of his left arm, completed the lift with a strap around the bar that connected to his left shoulder. This was a PR-best by 12 pounds for Aldridge and he did it on day one of the competition. Aldridge set a new personal best for the second time in the span of one month. In June, Aldridge completed a 225-pound clean and jerk at the 2021 Bacon Beatdown competition.
“This is the way: deadlift PR of 502 babyyyyyyy!! HYPED UP AGAIN!! ??,” Aldridge wrote on Instagram.
Not only is Logan Aldridge a competitor but he is the Director of Training at the Adaptive Training Academy. He played a big role in an Adaptive Division being added to the CrossFit Games. This is the first year that it has been included in the Games. In December, CrossFit announced some significant changes and that included the addition of the Adaptive Division.
Adaptive athletes across eight classes, for both men and women, were cleared to compete in the Open but would have to wait until 2022 to compete in the Games. That notion was softened on May 5 when CrossFit announced that the top five men and women from the Open would have a chance to compete in the Games. These five men and women were spread out over three categories in the Adaptive Division. These divisions are Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, and Neuromuscular.
The 2021 CrossFit Games will take place from July 27-Aug.1. After the first three events, Logan Aldridge currently sits in third place. He is behind Casey Acree and Jose Maldonado.
Aldridge has had a big hand in progressing CrossFit to include many athletes in many different situations. He is proving that anything is possible and there should not be excuses made. In fact, Aldridge used the hashtags “YourExcuseIsNotValid” and his saying “ThisIsTheWay.”

Shi Zhiyong Sets New World Record With 364kg Total Lift At 2020 Olympics
Shi Zhiyong won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after setting a world record in the 73kg category.
The Olympics is a time for athletes to showcase their skills on the biggest stage while competing for their country. That is exactly what Chinese weightlifter Shi Zhiyong has been doing during these games. On Wednesday, Zhiyong won the gold medal in the Men’s 73kg category and set a new world record by lifting a total of 364kg (802.4lb).
Shi Zhiyong grabbed the fourth gold medal of China in weightlifting. You Zhihui (49kg), Li Fabin (61kg), and Chen Lijun (67kg) have all come out on top in their respective categories. Zhiyong joined them with yet another record performance. He previously held the Olympic record from his performance at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Zhiyong began his performance with a 166kg snatch. He currently holds the world record of 169kg but did not attempt to break it here. Zhiyong followed that up by going for the world record of 198kg in the clean and jerk. This is a record he already set at 192kg during the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships. Zhiyong successfully performed the lift and this also clinched the overall world record.
Venezuela’s Julio Reben Mayora Pernia took home the silver medal but finished an eye-popping 18kg behind Zhiyong. Indonesia’s Rahmat Abdullah too home the bronze medal as a competitor in the Group B session. USA’s CJ Cummings attempted a 198kg clean and jerk that would have landed him in third place but the lift was failed.
Shi Zhiyong continues to rack up the medals. Since 2012, Zhiyong has totaled 10 gold medals in International competition. He was won four golds at the Asian Championships and three at the World Championships. Zhiyong also won gold at the IWF World Cup in 2019 and Olympic Games in 2016 and 2020.
At 27 years old, Zhiyong has plenty left in the tank to keep competing internationally moving forward. The sport of weight lifting is in a good place when looking at the young talent and that includes Mayora and Cummings. All other competitors have been vying for the top spot that has been held by Zhiyong for years now. He has not been defeated in international competition since his debut back in 2012.
Shi Zhiyong is now a two-time defending champion at the Olympic Games. With the competition being held in Paris in 2024, Zhiyong will have a chance to defend his title once again.

Melvin Anthony: Bodybuilders Today Train Hard, But They Can Train Harder

Melvin Anthony talks about new school bodybuilders and their training ethic.
Melvin Anthony is a bodybuilder that was in his prime between the second Golden Era of the 90s and the modern era we see today. He competed from the late 90s through to 2008. So he brings an interesting perspective on the recent debate about modern bodybuilding. Is the quality not up to par with the 90s and earlier? Or is this an unfair criticism? Do bodybuilders today not train as hard as earlier eras? In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Melvin Anthony believes that bodybuilders train very hard today… but thinks they can also train harder.
Melvin Anthony doesn’t want to to knock the new school era of bodybuilders. He understands how general sweeping statements can paint a broad stroke on a very diverse group of athletes. That’s why when we asked him about the current state of bodybuilding – he was very careful with his words. He doesn’t think that there is a bad training ethic in bodybuilders today – but he does think that it could push to the next level to match the greats of yesteryear.
In fact, history is very important to Melvin Anthony. He worries that we are not focusing enough on the history of bodybuilding to learn from what was done in the past. Anthony thinks that social media and short attention spans might be preventing bodybuilders today from reaching their best.
“I’m not saying they’re not training hard,” Melvin Anthony states in our interview. He continues:
“I’m not saying that they are not worthy of what they are getting on stage. But there’s a level that they can get to that they haven’t tapped into yet. And I believe they will. Hopefully they’ll get it. Hopefully they’ll start talking to a Flex Wheeler or a Jay Cutler – ‘Hey man, how did you train. Can you show me what you did?’ Watch how those guys train… I’m not saying they’re not training as hard. I just think they can train harder.”
Melvin Anthony stresses the difference between training hard and training beyond hard in a similar manner as past legends. He thinks that the immediacy of the internet has changed the attention span of everyone – including bodybuilders. He worries that they don’t deeply learn enough about the past and actually engage with it.
But Melvin Anthony also makes a point to say he’s hopefully that this will pass. The current era of bodybuilding seems to be almost a transitional one. We still have some greats of the early aughts competing such as Phil Heath and Roelly Winklaar among others. The new crop of bodybuilders, such as Hunter Labrada or Nick Walker, are only just now exploding onto the scene.
Melvin Anthony is optimistic that these bodybuilders are only on the beginning of their journey – and that their training will become even more focused as they continue to grow as athletes. He hopes that the new generation will learn from the past greats and become the next legends of the sport.

It appears that Chad Mendes is prepping for something big. The former top UFC featherweight appears to be getting the itch for competition. While he may have retired from competition, the fire is still burning and Mendes looks more than capable for a comeback.
A former rival of Conor McGregor and current featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski, Chad Mendes has a ton of experience in high level competition. He had one of the greatest battles of all-time again former featherweight king Jose Aldo. Mendes possessed the kind of raw potential to become a champion. But after his battle with Volkanovski, he decided to call it quits.
Since then Chad Mendes has embraced his love of hunting and being a rugged outdoorsman. He has shown incredible proficiency with a compound bow and an impressive savvy when it comes to hunting.
That said, Chad Mendes still continues to train like a top athlete. When you truly love something it can be hard to let it go, especially when it’s been in your life for so long. Still performing like an absolute beast, it appears that Mendes is starting to get that itch for competition once again.
In a recent training video, Chad Mendes channeled boxing greats Canelo Alvarez and Mike Tyson. In doing so, Mendes has looked tremendous. Not only has his physique improved, but his boxing skills as well thanks to his new boxing coach Joey Rodriguez.

5 Muscle Building Foods You Need
Listen, I hear you want to get bricked up. You want calves the size of tree trunks, arms that rip T-shirts, and a chest that’s got a few dimensions to it. Some food choices can help with this.
In fact, add these foods to your shopping list if you struggle to pack on that size.
1. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
Muscle is mass, meaning it weighs something. That’s obvious, but I know so many skinny dudes who are not gaining weight. The scale stays the same every morning. This is no Bueno.
Like if your legs resemble chopsticks and your back would get crushed from a hit by the carnival Go Karts, I got some news for you. You need more calories.
My go to is peanut butter and jelly. It’s calorically dense and is the ultimate slap in the face of anyone who’s whining about, but “I just can’t gain weight no matter how much I eat” nonsense.
Take your favorite bread and slather on some peanut butter which have muscle building protein and healthy fats. Then slather on your favorite jelly and you got a snack or meal that can skyrocket your calories when you need them.
They also taste amazing, stimulate childhood nostalgia, and can be prepped ahead of time for convenience. Bonus tip: frozen PB & J’s are lifechanging, probably better than sex.
2. Salmon
Every 3 ounces pack about 17 grams of protein, 2 grams of muscle enhancing omega-3s, and loads of key nutrients like B-vitamins.
Salmon also contain a key antioxidant astaxanthin which have anti-inflammatory and health/skin enhancing effects. Salmon is arguably a superfood if such thing exists. Fattier cuts can help boost caloric intake as well.
It also pairs well with many starches and vegetables. In addition, for busy lifters, smoked salmon can be a gamechanger as far as anabolic snacks goes.
136 grams of smoked salmon packs you 25 grams of protein along with loads of hormone enhancing healthy fats and Vitamin D.
3. Nuts
Speaking of healthy fats, nuts are a key player here. They pass the convenient and calorically dense test, so simply having more nuts around can increase your average caloric intake if needed.
They also contain some protein which never hurts, but the fat and micronutrients are key here. In fact, in studies where subjects are eating a surplus of saturated vs unsaturated fats, even when consuming the same amount of calories, the group that consumes healthy fats gain more muscle (1).
Same goes for dieting, the groups consuming the same calories from unsaturated fats retain more muscle mass.
Some of my favorites are almonds, pistachios, walnuts, and cashews. If you want some extra omega-3s, flaxseed is an excellent choice.
4. Shellfish
Shellfish is eaten all over the world yet in America, we still have wimps who are afraid to eat seafood. Like, if eating shellfish is really giving you that much anxiety, you might want to get your testosterone checked.
For clarification, shellfish includes crab, lobster, clams, scallops, oysters, shrimp, crayfish, and mussels. Many of these can be eaten raw or partially cooked. While some shellfish have strong flavors, many of them are quite mild taste.
Furthermore, they’re a stable in many country’s cuisines and produce awesome health benefits. For building muscle, they are nutritional powerhouses. All shellfish is packed with protein and have little tag along fat, most of which are unsaturated fats anyways. In addition, they’re packed with zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B12, all of which are common deficiencies.
Zinc and magnesium have direct roles in muscle recovery and hormonal production. B12 promotes and supports the mTORpathway responsible for muscle growth. These same nutrients also promote brain function and immune strength.
In fact, fish and shellfish are arguably the most anabolic and health enhancing animal sources on an ounce per ounce level.
5. Whole Eggs
Who doesn’t love eggs? I’ll tell you who. Psychopaths. Eggs are easy to digest, can be prepared a number of ways, and are packed with key muscle building nutrients. For all my macro trackers, eggs are also easy to track as well. One large egg is typically 70 calories with 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat.
Whole eggs have been shown to stimulate more muscle protein synthesis than egg whites even when matched for the same protein content (2). The anabolic boost comes from the yolk because that’s where key health and muscle supporting nutrients are found.
You get multiple B-vitamins, choline, vitamin A, and selenium.
However, the most powerful muscle building in eggs is dietary cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol gets a bad rep because foods high in it tends to be high in saturated fat which can impact health when overconsumed in unhealthy individuals.
Fortunately, whole eggs contain a very favorable cholesterol to saturated fat ration, plus it’s very different when a lean weight lifting trainee eats them for breakfast compared to an overweight couch potato eating them inside their baked goods.
But anyways, dietary cholesterol has been shown to enhance strength and muscle growth (3). Eggs are one of the few foods packed with cholesterol reasonable to their serving size. One egg has about 190 mg of cholesterol. Some studies, participants who see anabolic effects consume as much as 1000 mg, so 4-5 eggs should make a great post workout meal. Additional cholesterol will also come from other foods you eat like seafood in smaller amounts.
Change Your Grocery List
