The 2023 World’s Strongest Nation (WSN) contest is back. The contest between the USA and the UK will take place on Nov. 18, 2023, in Liverpool, UK. On May 11, 2023, the contest’s promoter, Giants Live, took to their Instagram page to reveal the strongmen who will captain the teams representing those two nations.
2019 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) Martins Licis will helm the eight-person charge for the USA. 2017 WSM Eddie Hall with lead the eight-athlete defense of the UK. This is a rematch of these captains from the 2022 WSN contest, where Team UK beat Team USA*.
*Note: Robert Oberst was the original captain of Team USA for the 2022 WSN contest but was replaced by Licis on Nov. 17, 2022.

Eddie Hall vs. Martins Licis
The 2022 WSN contest was the first competitive strongman contest Hall competed in since his retirement from the sport following his WSM victory in 2017. Since then, Hall has remained active in the strongman community, routinely operating as a guest host/commentator on Giants Live events, including WSM contests.
Licis took the majority of the 2023 strongman season off to allow for additional recovery time after a stellar return to the sport at the end of 2021. He won the 2021 Rogue Strongman Invitational and the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic. He finished as the runner-up at the 2022 WSM contest between two-time WSM champion Tom Stoltman in the gold position and 2020 WSM Oleksii Novikov in the bronze position.

Who’s Teaming Up?
The teams for the USA and UK for the 2023 WSN contest have not been announced yet as of this article’s publication. If the structure of the event remains the same as it was in 2022, the strongmen and strongwomen will all compete in the same events, some in relay fashion.
One of the standout moments from the 2022 WSN was Gabi Dixson scoring the longest Hercules Hold time using the same implements as the strongmen. The only athlete to beat her time was UK’s Mark Felix, who was dominant in grip events over the entirety of his career.
It is unlikely but not impossible that Felix returns to team with Hall in 2023. Felix retired from WSM competition at the conclusion of the 2023 contest — his 18th WSM appearance — where he was eliminated in the Qualifying stage.
