What is Spirulina?
Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria, more commonly referred to as blue-green alga, that grows in fresh and saltwater. The use of spirulina dates back to the Aztecs, who initially used the superfood as an endurance-booster and to treat diseases. Over time we learned more of its amazing health properties which have a wide range of use.
Spirulina is packed with different nutrients, as well as magnesium, potassium, and manganese. It is also a complete protein as it contains all nine of the essential amino acids. Perhaps the best part is there are only 20 calories per serving. A standard tablespoon serving has 4 g of protein, 2 g of carbs, and 1 gram of fat, which includes omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Benefits of Spirulina:
Spirulina has a wide range of uses and claimed health benefits. We cited studies that support each of the benefits below.
1. Protein Content
Spirulina is considered a complete protein, as it contains all nine essential amino acids, as well as all non-essentials. One small serving contains four grams of plant-based protein, making it great for vegans and vegetarians.
Multiple studies have found that spirulina is made up of up to 70% digestible protein, a number greater than that of beef. With high levels of protein and the complete amino profile, this makes spirulina a high biological-value protein (HBV). Most health experts recommend at least half of all protein should come from HBV sources, making spirulina an excellent choice in any diet that is looking to increase protein.1
2. May help repair muscle damage
When we work out we increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that results in oxidative stress. This oxidative damage can weaken and destroy proteins, leading to accelerated muscle fatigue. Multiple studies have found that spirulina may help repair muscle damage by limiting oxidative damage.
One double-blind study measured oxygen uptake, heart rate (HR), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) in eleven untrained males performing arm-cycling exercises. They found the participants that supplemented with spirulina had greatly increased oxygen uptake during time of fatigue. In conclusion, spirulina can improve oxygen uptake, which will reduce muscle fatigue and therefore repair muscle damage.2
2. Increases energy levels
One of the main uses of spirulina is for the energy-boosting effects. The Aztecs were documented using spirulina for increased energy levels, particularly messengers who had to travel extremely long distances. It contains magnesium and several other vitamins that help energy levels as well.
Studies have shown that spirulina increases healthy lactobacillus in the intestine, which enables the body to produce vitamin B6, which helps with energy release. Spirulina is also a good source of vitamin B1, B2, B3, copper, and iron.3 Therefore, spirulina can increase our energy levels by feeding the body with essential nutrients needed for energy.
3. High in antioxidants
Phycocyanin is a plant-based protein that contains the pigment that gives spirulina its color. More importantly, phycocyanin is a powerful antioxidant that fights against free radicals and oxidative damage.
Oxidative damage can cause harm to your cells and has been linked to chronic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and other serious diseases such as cancer. Antioxidants can help fight free radicals and viruses, as well as block the molecules that cause inflammation.
Multiple studies have shown that spirulina contains high levels of phycocyanin which can reduce inflammation, block tumor growth, and kill cancer cells. It also promotes enhanced immune function, including liver and kidney protection.4
Side-Effects Of Spirulina
Whenever you are looking to start a new supplement, it's important to consult your doctor about possible side-effects or interactions. Spirulina is concentrated and super high in nutrients so it might pose a health threat to certain individuals. Be sure to follow the recommended dose to avoid any issues. Some spirulina that is harvested in the wild could be contaminated with heavy metals and bacteria that contain dangerous toxins. Most side-effects only show in people with preexisting conditions or diseases.
What to look for when buying Spirulina supplements:
With the boom in popularity in recent years, several new companies have launched their own spirulina brands. It's one of the most sought after supplements on the market, but we want to make sure you find the proper brand for your goals.
1. Ingredients
The supplement should contain Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis). The minimum amount should be 500 mg up to 3,000 mg, which is a standard dose and has 10 calories and 2 g of protein. The only other ingredient you might find would be the binder, typically silicon dioxide, or the vegetable capsule that holds the spirulina powder.
These products come in either gelatin capsules, tablet form, or in powdered form which can be mixed into water and shakes. When looking at ingredients of spirulina powder, organic sources are the best options.
2. Testing/Transparency
If the product states it is organic it should be certified by the USDA. It should be packaged and tested for quality control in the United States. Look for the Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) stamp, which guarantees certified facilities. Also look for third-party testing to ensure a high quality spirulina supplement that is herbicide free, safe from heavy metals, and free of harmful bacteria. Look for official vegan and organic certification as well.
3. Price
Since everyone will have their own dosage schedules, the best way to compare price is on a per-dosage basis. Consider a subscribe-and-save or bulk option to make the most out of the price.
4. Reviews
Take advantage of online reviews, as they can be a great way to help find the best product for your needs. This is also a great way to see if anyone suffered any unwanted side effects and if the brand produced the expected benefits.
