The woman is represented by attorney Dave Coleman of Coleman Legal Partners, who confirmed the news to MMA Fighting in a phone call Tuesday after news of the lawsuit was first reported by the Independent in Ireland. The personal injury lawsuit was filed Monday over events that allegedly took place in 2018. The woman’s mother has also filed a smaller claim against McGregor, and she’s also being represented by Coleman in the case.
The woman and her mother’s identity and details on the allegations in the lawsuit are not disclosed publicly due to strict privacy laws in Ireland.
“We can’t really comment on the substantive issues,” Coleman told MMA Fighting. “Suffice to say, I do represent those ladies, we have issued these proceedings before the court, and we’re satisfied that our case is well-founded before the court.”
McGregor, who is currently in Abu Dhabi preparing for his fight against Dustin Poirier on Saturday at UFC 257, had a statement issued by his representatives after news of the lawsuit first came to light.
“After an exhaustive investigation conducted by the Gardaí which, in addition to interviews of the plaintiff, included interviewing numerous sources, obtaining witnesses’ statements, examining closed circuit footage and the cooperation of Conor McGregor, these allegations were categorically rejected,” McGregor spokesperson Karen Kessler said in a statement initially reported in the Independent.
“The plaintiff knows the facts contradict the assertions in this lawsuit. Mr. McGregor will dispute any claims and is confident that justice will prevail.”
According to the Independent, the situation brought about by the lawsuit involved an investigation originally conducted by the An Garda Síochána, but no charges were ever levied against McGregor.
The woman involved in the lawsuit has reportedly known McGregor “for many years.” In March 2019, the New York Times reported that McGregor was under investigation for sexual assault in Ireland for an alleged incident that took place in 2018. Two months earlier, McGregor was detained and questioned by law enforcement in regards to the incident, but released pending further investigation.
Because of strict laws in Ireland, details surrounding the alleged incident were never made public. Per the Times, the accuser said the alleged incident took place at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin, which is close to McGregor’s hometown of Crumlin in South Dublin. In the report, McGregor was described as an “occasional guest” at the hotel, and sources claimed to have seen him visit before the night of the incident.
Beyond that investigation, McGregor has also settled several other legal issues in recent years. This past September, he was interviewed and released by police in Corsica following allegations of “attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition.” In 2019, he pleaded guilty to assault and was fined after he punched a bar patron in Ireland. In 2018, he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in Brooklyn after he launched an attack on a bus filled with fighters ahead of UFC 223 in April 2018.
