It’s a very sad fact that most of the worldwide population doesn’t have a fundamental amount of knowledge when it comes down to nutrition. When you think about it, what we are taught in school doesn’t really apply towards living our day to day lives. Our public education system, at least here in the states, don’t focus anywhere close to enough on proper nutrition. Furthermore, anything that may be mentioned about nutrition is done so following guidelines set by the government. We’ve all see the “food pyramid” at some point or another going through grade school. This guideline is so poorly thought out and constructed that someone who actually follows it wouldn’t really be feeding his/her body what it really needs. Furthermore, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements for fast food and frozen dinners. We are so busy we don’t take the time to take care of ourselves with one of the most important things in our lives, our nutrition.
But when people do get curious about the proper way to reach their aesthetic goals, they usually ask the question “what foods are most anabolic.” I should say this is a very reasonable question. After all, you’ve taken the time to, at the least, do a little research and come up with something that works towards your goals, bravo!
I want to make clear that FOOD is the MOST ANABOLIC stuff on this planet. Without it, you don’t have any anabolic activity. Your muscles cannot grow without the proper building blocks and energy required from nutrition. My answer to those who ask me what foods are anabolic is “ALL OF THEM.” It’s just that some will help you grow better and faster than others, but its really a balanced combination of the three major macro-nutrients (protein, carbs, fats) that really make food so anabolic.
Protein is the building block of muscle. When hypertrophy occurs the amino acids from the protein you intake repair the damaged muscle and make it larger/stronger. Protein is the first and most anabolic food that you can consume. It should always be at above a moderate level.
Carbohydrates are the support system for protein. The biological process of muscle repair requires energy. Carbohydrates will not only provide that energy, but help provide energy for the body not to catabolize muscle
Fats are usually overlooked. But they are actually one of the most important type of food you can take in, especially as a natural bodybuilder. The process of creating natural testosterone is hinged so highly on cholesterol and fat intake that I can take someone’s natural test levels to that of an 80-year-old mans by restriction fat intake. Cholesterol is not bad for you in moderation. All fats, except hydrogenated fats, are actually good for you when balanced correctly.
Finally, having a caloric intake that exceeds your daily caloric needs is anabolic. So you cant just eat these three macos mentioned and expect to build muscle. Your body is adaptive. You MUST eat more than you burn to truly take advantage of the anabolic effect of food.
I hope this article sheds a little more light on your path to your goals
