Esther Lin, MMA Fighting Another bout has been added to this Saturday’s return to PPV for the UFC.
A matchup between Andre Ewell and Chris Gutierrez will serve as a late addition to the UFC 258 fight card. Gutierrez’s gym Factory X revealed the matchup on Monday via social media. Subsequently, multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed the booking to MMA Fighting.
Per sources, the fight will be contested at a catchweight of 140 pounds.
Ewell was scheduled to face Cody Stamann at this past weekend’s UFC Vegas 18 event, stepping in for Merab Dvalishvili who was forced to withdraw due to a positive COVID-19 test. Ewell was also scratched due to a positive test, but would test negative in back-to-back tests following the result, his team told MMA Fighting. Despite the negative results, “Mr. Highlight” was still forced to follow promotional protocol and quarantine for 10 days.
The 33-year-old will now face Gutierrez in hopes of extending his winning streak to three following decision victories over Jonathan Martinez—Gutierrez’s teammate—and Irwin Rivera.
Since dropping his octagon debut to Raoni Barcelos in November 2018, Gutierrez has not tasted defeat in his last four appearances. “El Guapo” picked up 2019 decision wins over Ryan MacDonald and Geraldo de Freitas before delivering his first UFC finish via leg kick TKO over Vince Morales at UFC on ESPN 9 in May. The 29-year-old would cap off his 2020 campaign by fighting Cody Durden to a draw at UFC Vegas 5 in August,
Following the win over Morales, Gutierrez called for a fight with Ewell and will now get his wish on short notice.
UFC 258 will be headlined by a welterweight title fight between Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns.
