How easy is it to become certified as a personal trainer? What certification did you do and why? Are some better than others? I've been asked so many times now to help provide a workout/diet program (with or without gear), I'm considering getting certified so at least I can help more people (and cover my ass).

Anything is easy if you are into it and like it! So you will find it easy.
I'm thinking of doing the same thing btw.
What I think is the hard part is finding a place to actually train people. Either you own your own place which is a costly endeavor.
Or you work for an established gym where they take a piece of your action.
If you just wanna have it for the on occasional personal question like you mentioned I think the only issue is maintaining your certification.

So then what is the certification process like? Do they just give you a book to study and then test you later? What is involved?

I know you can do it online...I'm sure there is a book. I was hoping someone else would have jumped in.
There are different certifications

I have had several certifications. ACE, AFFA, and ISSA. Although I haven't kept any current for a couple years. You can do it all online, all by book or sometimes they have workshops, even my community college offers a class. After the study period you take the test. They aren't tough at all. I have been interested in looking at some of the specialized certification like Sports Nutrition or some others. You won't have a problem BigZ

The first thing all of them require is CPR Cert.

I have my NASM and have taken the test for ISSA and past it for a friend lol the ISSA test is also open book but has essay questions where as NASM is multiple choice. But I think NASM is the most looked for especially in commercial gyms. I did a 3 month online course and it was great. Don't waste your money taking it at a trade school or some thing not worth it just really read the book and you'll be fine!

Ok that's the info we need!
Thanks guys... so once you have your certification. How do you maintain it? Is it yearly?
Sports nutrition look good too! I would get that.

I'm sure some of those ceus are from upkeep of your cpr
I'm an EMT anyway and have to keep my cpr going. But even if you aren't an emt like me having some cpr is always a good idea...just in case

So then how does one go about getting CPR certified?

Its easy. They offer classes that take a couple/few hours at the local fire department and the college where I live. Should be the same anywhere. After you get your Certification you just need to retest once a year with an instructor. Its $40 in Washington DC area.

Just go on the website for the American Heart Association. They always have classes all over the place, so it's easy to find one. I am a Firefighter/EMR, so I get mine annually anyway, like First Blood.

Back in the day, like late 90's I accumulated like 3 certs, then kept renewing them, costing time and money. Then I realized NOBODY , not a one of my members ever asked me for my diploma's. I think I likely got a pass due to the fact I was a competitive BB'er and always looked the part. That being said, I have let all 3 expire long time ago and have no intention on forking over hard to come by money to renew.

I did take John Parillo's hands on course, mostly on hard core BB'ing and learned more by taking a non-qualifying course like his than any other run of the mill certs like before! Just my 2 cents!

And you still train people? Isn't it good to at least have one so you can CYA if something happens? Or do you have them sign something to the effect that they waive their rights to sue you considering they know they are taking on a risky activity? I haven't seen anyone ask either, hell, I didn't ask my trainer when I tried one.

Yes I still train members but to be honest, most people pick the fluffy trainers as the perception is I'm too hard on folks. I'll have to check my ins policy, good point, I think I'm covered either way. So yes I do but not many, being the owner I get to pick & chose who I want to deal with

I am a volunteer firefighter. We serve the whole county, outside of the 3 cities with paid departments. So far we have 8 stations, but only have one ladder truck that is housed at one of them. So, my department has an engine, a tanker, and a brush truck and I have driven all three.

Nice bro! We assist volunteer towns around us. We get there and 3 guys struggling with an attic job ..they have no one to vertical vent for em...I feel so bad for them...my crew and I bust our asses to make that roof Pronto so they can make the knock down.
One time the guy on the back nozzle came and found us outside...he said when he heard our chain saw going he was so happy...he said he was cooking up there and running low on air.
My hats off to you guys being a volley is one of the most noble things you can do.

Do you really need qualifications to be a personal trainer legally?
