For general health purposes, few supplements appear more effective than berberine. Berberine has been shown several times over to reduce cholesterol and improve insulin sensitivity in both rodent and human studies. However, when considering bodybuilding application, berberine has been shown to impair protein synthesis, meaning that bodybuilders might want to stick to the lower end of the dosage spectrum and avoid taking berberine around their workouts.
