Earlier this week, the 47-year-old boxer turned promoter declared that he was coming out of retirement with plans to compete again more than a decade after his last fight.
“The rumors are true, and I’m going to start sparring in the next few weeks,” De La Hoya told ESPN.
“I miss being in the ring, I love boxing. Boxing is what gave me everything I have today, and I just miss it.”
On Saturday night following UFC on ESPN 15, White was asked about the news and his thoughts on De La Hoya returning from retirement.
“Cocaine isn’t cheap,” White said while taking a shot at the former boxing champion. “It’s expensive. Gotta make money.”
De La Hoya, who has battled alcohol and drug addiction in the past, has engaged in a volatile war of words with White over the past few years.
In the past, White and De La Hoya were friendly with each other but that relationship disintegrated after the Golden Boy owner trashed a boxing match between former UFC champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.
White then took direct aim at De La Hoya, especially after the 1992 Olympic gold medalist had mentioned pitting himself in a fight with McGregor after the Irish superstar made his boxing debut against Mayweather in 2017.
From that moment on, White has never missed a chance to blast De La Hoya whenever his name comes up and it doesn’t appear that time has healed those old wounds.
As for De La Hoya’s actual comeback, he said he plans on competing against “any top guy out there,” but he hasn’t actually booked his return fight just yet.
