The oddsmakers on BetOnline.ag have pegged Khamzat Chimaev as a -175 favorite over Edwards ahead of their upcoming fight on Dec. 19 at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
Despite the fact that Edwards (18-3) has won eight consecutive UFC fights—a streak that is second only to current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (12)—he finds himself as a slight underdog to Chimaev (9-0) at +150.
Edwards has not fought since July 2019. He was supposed to fight former UFC champion Tyron Woodley in London on March 21, but that event was canceled in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. His current win streak includes decision victories over Rafael dos Anjos, Gunnar Nelson, Donald Cerrone, Bryan Barberena, and Vicente Luque.
Chimaev became an overnight sensation this past summer when he picked up two UFC wins on Fight Island in the span of 10 days, completely dominating John Phillips in a 185-pound bout and then dropping to 170 pounds to put on an even more one-sided performances against Rhys McKee. In September, he needed just 17 seconds to KO Gerald Meerschaert at a UFC APEX show.
On Tuesday, Chimaev officially entered the UFC’s welterweight rankings at No. 15. His bout with McKee is his lone UFC fight at 170 pounds so far.
