I am about half way through "spitting in the soup, inside the dirty game of doping in sports", by Mark Johnson. It is one of the best books on doping in sports I have ever read, and goes through the history ( as well as showing how history has been deceptive went trying to villify POD's).
I knew it was going to be good and different when in the introduction he calls out the 'high and mighty" in american who thumb their noses up on POD yet give prescribed amphetamines like Adderal to improve focus and stamina in school to over 6 million of those aged 4-17 ( will someone please think of the children, sorry that was me not what he wrote). We take viagra to improve sexual performance.
And I quote" while anti-doping missionaries might claim performance enhancing drugs are immoral and that regulators know what is best for the people, in practice. Americans take a more pragmatic stance. their attitudes regarding performance enhancing drugs outside of sports suggest that what is moral is not what is most chemically pure, but rather what is most productive"
