Training for the 2023 Games
Wells opened her workout with the deadlift. Toomey, who is not competing at this year’s Games due to recently having her first child, joined Wells for this workout. Wells pulled a conventional deadlift, while the six-time champ opted for a wide-stance sumo deadlift.
The duo performed four sets of bench presses following the deadlift session. Since Toomey was postpartum, she scaled the workout, while Wells continued to increase her training intensity as per the plan of her Games prep.
Before the first round of a sled push, push-ups, and clean & jerk circuit, that featured Wells utilizing three 45-pounds weight plates, Toomey assessed how vital intensity is at this stage of Wells prep:
If you’re not going to failure, you’re not training hard enough.
Going to failure was not an issue for Toomey, who toasted her triceps by the conclusion of the session.

Sydney Wells’ Road To The 2023 CrossFit Games
Wells qualified for the 2023 Games via a seventh-place finish at the North America East Semifinal. It was her third Semifinal contest and her sixth attempt at reaching the Games.
Sydney’s twin sister Brooke Wells, an eight-time CrossFit Games competitor, failed to punch her ticket for the 17th edition of the sport’s biggest competition. She finished 14th at the North America East Semifinal, three spots outside the qualifying ranks.
The Individual Women’s division podium at the 2023 CrossFit Games is a riddle with so many elite Games mainstays out of the mix in 2023. Toomey’s absence guarantees a new Fittest Woman on Earth® will be crowned, 2022 runner-up Mal O’Brien withdrew from the season before the Semifinal stage, and other big names like Brooke Wells and Haley Adams will not be among the athletes competing in Madison.
