The 2023 Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU) National Championships occurred from Feb. 13-18, 2023, in Richmond, BC, Canada. Among the competitors on the roster was four-time International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Classic champion Jessica Buettner.
Competing in the 84-kilogram category for the first time since the 2019 Commonwealth Championships, Buettner scored two new national raw powerlifting records in the deadlift and total. Here are the stats from her performance:
2023 CPU National Championships Results — Jessica Buettner | 84KG, RAW
Squat — 209 kilograms (460.7 pounds)
BenchPress — 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds)
Deadlift — 250 kilograms (551.2 pounds) — Canadian National Record
Total — 559 kilograms (1,232.4 pounds) — Canadian National Record
In Buettner’s Instagram post recapping her performance, she mentioned that she also hit a new national squat record. That would be the case based on the current Canadian raw record listing on CPU’s website of 208.5 kilograms by Marianne Groleau in October 2022.
However, according to Open Powerlifting, the Canadian national raw squat record is 210 kilograms (463 kilograms), scored by Danielle Philibert at the 2021 CPU Port City Showdown. Buettner matched that 210-kilogram lift at the 2022 FFForce Girl Power meet.

Buettner went eight for eight in attempts in Richmond, BC, opting to scratch her final deadlift attempt after securing the raw national record. The previous Canadian raw deadlift record was 245 kilograms (540.1 pounds), scored by Buettner at the 2022 FFForce Girl Power contest. She eclipsed the previous Canadian raw total record of 557.5 kilograms (1,229.1 pounds) that Buettner achieved at that same meet.

Buettner’s performance at the 2023 CPU National Championships qualifies her for the 2023 IPF World Championships. This resulted even though Buettner did not put forth max effort in the meet, as she will compete at the 2023 IPF Sheffield Powerlifting Championships on March 25, 2023, in the 76-kilogram category, and wanted to maintain reasonable bodyweight for that contest.
