Tis the season to be prepping: If you've been taking preworkouts for a long time without a break, I recommend trying ketotifen out to "clear out" your beta-2 receptors. For best results, avoid stimulants while taking. ****
Ketotifen is an H-1 antihistamine normally used for allergies. However, in the fitness world it can be a great benefit for all of the stimulant addicts out there. As I've mentioned before, most stimulants(not caffeine) act on the beta-2 andrenoreceptors. Strong beta-2 agonists like clenbuterol can down-regulate(work less effectively) your beta-2 receptors. Ketotifen has been shown to prevent this from happening while taking with strong beta-2 agonists. Many people who use clenbuterol often add ketotifen for this very purpose.
Some research has shown it to actually up-regulate these receptors, as well which is really interesting. This can benefit people like myself who regularly use preworkouts with strong stimulants. Another property of ketotifen is it can act as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which increases the levels of cAMP. This is the same mechanism that caffeine has for increasing fat burning. Doses of ketotifen are 1-3mg a day. NOTE: there's a lot of bro science that says Benadryl(diphenhydramine) can do the same thing. I have yet to see any research validating Benadryl, only ketotifen. If you think you may be burnt out from preworkouts, ketotifen may be an option to help restore your beta-2 receptors!
