Recovering from Night Shift

Today is my first full day off after 4 night shifts. I finished work yesterday morning at 0530. I REALLY struggled to get my ass downstairs and into the gym for legal day this morning. In fact, I've been up since before 8 and just got down here about quarter past 10.

Once I'm moving, I feel good and I'm glad I got started. But goddamn, getting going is rough!

And, I have a TON of shit to do on my 2 days off here, before I go back to days (12 hour shifts) on Friday morning.

I do have a good job - even a great job. But shift work is ROUGH!

Perusing the mc forums between sets helps...

Power generation for me. Exactly as you say.

I always say the schedule is wonderful and horrible all at the same time. Every 4th week I'm off for 7 days, which is the wonderful part. The horrible part is what I gotta do to get through the other 3 weeks.

We did 4 on 4 off but most of the time we were short handed and only 2 ppl per shift, testing lab, you would work for days! Between bonuses and OT I would double my base salary.lol Then oil prices tanked lol

Yeah, I hear that. This past year we had 2 major outages. 2 Gas turbine overhauls, compete, a steam turbine overhaul, also complete, and hot gas path replacement outages on the other 2 Gas turbines. My longest stretch was 19 out of 21 days, with several other weeks-long stretches with no days off. It was brutal. The money was stupendous. But after a while you just stop caring about that and just want some time off!

We're back to normal, thank God, but with vacations there's a little OT here and there. This week coming up I work Fri through Sunday day shift, then immediately roll onto nights Monday for 4 nights. 7 work days in a row with no break between days and nights.

Good fucking times, right there....

Thank God we have a gym at the plant or I'd lose my marbles...

Our midnight shift just lost 2 ppl unexpectedly. Several times this past month I've gone in at 3am to cover the last half of the midnight shift and then worked mine till 3 pm. I'm useless, even when going to bed super early in order to get my 8 hours of sleep... it sucks! Everything suffers, gym, cleaning the house... I just have no energy.

Hard to find hard workers nowadays.

Know your pain guys, I work standard 10 hour shifts at my work with OT tacked on regularly to cover machine failures etc.
Actually reading this while lying in bed trying to find motivation to get up and go to gym.
Doesn't help when I get broken sleep due to kids waking up 3 hours after I go to sleep. Lucky my missus is amazing and during the week takes on the bear of the kid duties.

I hear that. When I'm on day, I wake up at 03:30 for now 0530 (am) to 5:30pm shift. I'm usually in bed by 8 on days, sometimes 7:30. Nothing gets accomplished on day shift except work.

I work 12 hour nights.. Like right now Im at work. Get into a routine, eat right, you be OK.

It's the rotating back and forth that kills me. Takes me a few days to get in the night shift groove. Once I'm there, I'm good. But I only do 4 nights in a row, then off a couple days and back on days. Flip flop every week. That's the rough part. I have major trouble sleeping at night after I've gotten into the night shift groove...

I have the same schedule. Transition from nights to days like that took me few years.

Now ten years later it don't affect me hardly at all. I bounce relatively easy.. Sure, lose some sleep sometimes but it's not critical.

I hope I get there one of these days. I'm 4 years into this. I go from days to nights fairly easily, but the other way is rough.

We're on the DuPont schedule, so the payoff is 7 days off in a row every 4th week. Right now I'm in my 4 day shift run.

What do you do? I'm a power plant operator.
