Food Fact Friday on Red Wine, I alluded to the idea that Red Wine contains beneficial polyphenols.

🍷One of these polyphenols is resveratrol. Research has supported the concept that resveratrol has the ability to increase fat burning as well as the ability to increase insulin sensitivity.

📄In a review paper by Baile et al. (2011) the authors summarized the mechanisms on the effectiveness of resveratrol. The mechanisms presented activated pathways that not only lead to the breakdown and utilization of fat, but also ones that increased the ability to use carbohydrates. I would recommend supplementing with 400-500mg/day for optimal benefits!

Baile, C. A., Yang, J. Y., Rayalam, S., Hartzell, D. L., Lai, C. Y., Andersen, C., & Della‐Fera, M. A. (2011). Effect of resveratrol on fat mobilization. Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1215(1), 40-47.

Can taking more per day be beneficial or less effective? I've researched some and found some companies selling 2000mg reservatrol. If it's not in the optimal range that's going to help, I'd rather not take it just to take it.

I would start with the recommend dosage of 400 - 500mg and see how that goes first. Why take more if you don't need it?

Some that I was looking at is dosed at 2000mg or 1500mg, so unless you cut the pill/capsule up, that would be what you would get.

My concern is that the actual strength of the drug in the research could have been very pure, who knows about the purity of something you get from a supplement company.
