With two events left in the Individual competition at the 2023 CrossFit Games in Madison, WI, Roman Khrennikov, in his sophomore year at the Games, was in second place overall on the leaderboard behind Jeffrey Adler. The battle for the title of Fittest Man on Earth® was still very much undetermined between those two athletes before disaster struck.
Khrennikov reportedly suffered a broken foot during Event 10, though the specifics and severity have yet to be confirmed at the time of this article’s publication.
Roman Khrennikov Powers Through Event 11
Despite the injury, Khrennikov still managed to compete in Event 11 — “Parallel-Bar Pulls” — on the final day of the Games. Though he didn’t finish the test before the 15-minute time cap ran out, Khrennikov notably performed double-unders on one leg as the crowd chanted his name. Khrennikov came in last during the test, which was ultimately won by Brent Fikowski at 7:45. You can watch Khrennikov’s performance in the YouTube video below:

Khrennikov didn’t earn any points as a result of his placing in Event 11, which helped Jeffrey Adler take a comfortable 72-point lead in the first-place spot. As of the time of this article’s publication, Khrennikov is still in second place heading into the final event. He has not withdrawn from the competition.
Roman Khrennikov’s CrossFit Games Career
The 2023 CrossFit Games is only Khrennikov’s second time competing at the event in person. His eagerly anticipated debut was continuously pushed back because of visa issues, but he was able to compete virtually in 2020 due to the restructuring of the Games during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, when Khrennikov finally got to compete at the Games in person, he made a big impact, coming in second place and cementing himself as one of the brightest stars of the sport. He was one of the favorites to win the whole thing in 2023, especially considering Justin Medeiros’ down year, but this might be yet another accomplishment in Khrennikov’s career that gets pushed back.
We’ll have more on Khrennikov’s injury as details come in.
