Social Media, the end of bodybuilding

I read an article several years ago by Matt Porter where he talked about some of the greatest bodybuilders of all time being over looked by the new breed of bodybuilding royalty the social media hero's. After reading the article, I took to the almighty you tube and looked up a few of those that have millions of followers. Really? These are the people that we are looking up to? What have the majority of them done? Nothing, never won a show, never helped get anyone other than themselves. Some of you may look up to a few of them, but why? Rich Piana may be a nice guy, his videos are truthful as far as I can tell and he along with Boston Lloyd were some of the first to actual tell people what they were taking. Rich has been smart enough to build his company into a huge money making machine with millions of followers. I don't begrudge him that at all, I have even take a few of his supplements. But a few short years ago when Rich was with Mutant, you could walk right up and talk to him with no problem and he was the same person he is today. What he has just done a fantastic job of marketing himself in the correct manner. Kudos to him.

I have walked the floor of the Arnold more than once, what I have always found it interesting that there will be huge lines to meet some of these internet heroes and just a few feet past them you will find Frank Zane with a hand full of people talking with him. WTF? The new classic physique is designed after him. People need to get their heads out of their asses and wake up!! I have had the luxury of being able to get into the Europe booth at the Arnold for many years. I remember eating lunch with Ed Corey. What a plethora of knowledge he was and I will never forget that day. What was a shame was the look on young people as they walked by and didn't have a clue who he was. I saw the same reaction to many of the bodybuilding greats not just Ed Corey. Those men that broke the ground for today social media hero's.

People need to know who Boyer Coe, Steve Reeves, Dave Draper, Tom Platz, Larry Scott, Sergio, Mike Menzer, Franco Columbu, Rachel McLish, Serge Nubert, and Robbie Robertson were and their place in history. Know your history to move forward.

You got that right. Those guys are legends.

Ever heard of Blockbuster where you could go and rent movies? They went out of business because of Redbox... Now Redbox has to give way to streaming services. It's just the way the industry is evolving. Thank the Internet...

yeah i loved walking through blockbuster looking for dvd to rent with the wife! Man they folded fast as fuck too

I agree, although the advent of the Internet has improved our lives, it has a dark side as well. These days what were low achievers a few decades ago would now be high status. The bar has been lowered to the point that no one jumps over it anymore, they basically trip over it.

The old school BB's you mention embellish the idea of hard core work and no BS gimmicks. I see it every day in my gym, the few guys who been at it for 30 plus yrs are consistent as hell and have the physique to back it up. Many of them arent on social media as they are comfortable in their own skin that they dont need to flaunt it. Let the insecure ones toot their horn. I have one member who still 30% BF and he takes his shirt off for FB pic and proclaims "damn I look good" and I'm thinking ya when you drop another 50 lbs and grow some muscles, we'll see!!

I get on FB once in a while, I admit the pop culture love it and it does serve a purpose. But I would never ever spill my life, my politics or any of my private life for all to see. Besides, if I had followers, you bet I'm calling the Police on those stalkers! :)

Bro if I get a chance, I'll post some pics of the above BB's mentioned above, I have almost all of them on my gym wall, except Larry Scott & Steve Reeves which I need to get up on the wall. Most are black & white and fit in perfectly with my industrial black and white theme.

That would be awesome!!

Yeah, but I bet you Larry Scott and Sergio Oliva said the same thing when Pumping Iron came out. This Lou Ferrigno guy is now one of the most popular bodybuilders in the world and what has he won?

Lou stays busy but he doesn't even get treated like the social media guys do.

70 year old Robbie Robertson... wonder what the pro's of today will look like at 70?

I've had several phone convo's with Robby and read his autobiography, the guy is a total freak with less than 1% genetics. Not only that, hes such a nice down to earth guy to boot that will lift and lead the BB's life style until the good Lord calls him home. Plus he was a outstanding athlete in school and has done quite well in the biz world as well.

Hard to find anything bad about him at all....
