Stem cells for younger blood? Researchers at Columbia University are looking at stem cells to make blood “younger” and possibly slow the aging process. All blood cells in the body are created by a small number of stem cells that reside in bone marrow. As people age, these hematopoietic stem cells change, and produce fewer red blood cells (leading to anemia) and fewer immune cells (which raises the risk of infection and hinders vaccination efforts). Researchers are investigating whether rejuvenating the system that makes blood is a viable option to get the benefits of younger blood.
