I've always been under the impression that you are only trying to burn the fat away from your ab area, not actually trying to build the muscles with heavy weights.
i usually start the workout with leg raises then move to weight motions... i love using the rope to do weighted crunches... then finis up with HIG rep crunches... usually 3 sets of 200

It defiantly helps to make the abs a bit bigger...one of the big asthetic benefits is that you can have visible abs at a higher bf% than someone who doesnt...also makes them look more chisled when you are dieted down. Win, Win...I agree it sucks training them but like anything else just get it done.
