First, the UFC bantamweight took a short notice opportunity to face Cody Stamann at UFC Vegas 18 that took place this past weekend after Merab Dvalishvili was scratched following a positive COVID-19 test. A little over a week before the event, it was Ewell who tested positive for the virus and, even after two subsequent negative tests to prove it was a false reading, he was pulled from the fight and given a mandatory 10-day quarantine.
Now “Mr. Highlight” gets another short notice opportunity to face Chris Gutierrez this Saturday at UFC 258. The 140-pound catchweight bout will kick off the ESPN preliminary card from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
Ewell joined MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck from Las Vegas for an exclusive interview to discuss what happened with the Stamann fight from his perspective, how close the fight with Stamann was to being booked for UFC 258, Gutierrez calling him out after his leg kick TKO win over Vince Morales, predicting he’ll turn his opponent into a wrestler early in the contest, wanting to be ranked with an impressive win, his prediction for the welterweight championship main event between Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns, and more.
