Having spent the majority of the last decade working in conjunction with the world leading online retailer, I have seen a huge change in the manner in which business operate, especially in relation to their workforce. This was greatly impacted with the passing of the affordable Healthcare act (Obamacare). Since Obamacare has passed, we have seen a rise in the number of job, this is due to the reduction of the full time workers. Business do not want to have to cover all the cost and benefits of a full time worker, not when they can hire two to three people to complete the same working hours for less money. What this has caused is a unwanted burden placed on the remaining full time workers. Extended overtime to the point that people are at the point that they are having health and mental issues from the stress.
Jim Beam, one of the leading bourbon producers in the state of KY, had its workers go on strike this week. Not for raises, not for additional benefits, but for more full time employees. This is due to long extended periods of overtime and the company's refusal to hire full time workers. What people either don't understand or don't want to understand is that with the increase of a part time workforce, you also have an decrease in attendance and an increase in attrition. Let me explain, if you are working somewhere part time and you get a chance to work full time or have a interview for a full time position, you call off for the day. If you get the full time position or even another part time position but with more hours, you are going to leave the current positions. So what a company ends up doing is spending more time training and hiring people than the new person spends actually working. This leads to that unwanted burden being placed on the current full time worker.
When your employer places these burdens on their workers, they are actually saying your work/life balance is not a priority for the company. That as a person, you are not that important. Your family is not as important as getting the job done. It is sad, that in todays world, we are seeing this type of pressure placed on families.
The gym is my refuge, my stress relief, my home away from home. If it is yours, look at the reasons that you miss your workouts.
