Yohimbine is an alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist that can release fatty acids(increase lipolysis)from cells via increased noradrenaline levels. It seems to be in almost every “fat burner” on the market, but does it really help with fat loss?? Surprisingly there are not a lot human studies but the ones I found are weak, at best or flat out say yohimbine doesn’t affect fat loss. A study from 1991 where 33 patients finished the trial, used either placebo or up to 43mg(that’s a shit ton) of yohimbine/d for 6 MONTHS! Researchers showed no change in body composition, no fat loss. Another study shows it does increase mobilization of fat, increase free fatty acids but again doesn’t show any weight/fat loss. Just shows a potential mechanism for weight loss(in fact, they cite a study where yohimbine showed fat loss in subjects on a 400kcal a day diet. No surprise that you will burn some fat eating only 400kcal).

The infamous 2006 soccer player study shows that the group receiving 10mg of yohimbine 2x a day for 21 days had a lower fat percentage vs placebo(9.3% +/- 1.1% vs 7.1% +/- 2.2%). However, if you look at those standard deviations, the results are basically the same 9.3-1.1% ~ equal to 7.1 +2.2%. Is that really great data?!? No, it’s not. I do believe there is a mechanism for potential of fat loss, but I would love to see some newer studies on more athletes. If 43mg/d for 6 months didn’t work, then I’m not sure it has much fat burning ability. Maybe if combined with a beta-2 adrenergic agonist, it could help. Personally, yohimbine gives me anxiety at 5mg, so I don’t use it. I have used alpha-yohimbine and I think combined with caffeine and ephedrine it may help. You definitely sweat more, but that’s not indicative of burning fat or long term weight loss. Food for thought.
