The lifters at the 2023 WRPF American Pro 2 meet in Manassas, VA, wasted no time setting records. On Oct. 27, 110-kilogram Junior competitor Sawyer Klatt set the all-time Junior world record in the deadlift for his weight class with a lift of 385 kilograms (848.9 pounds). Junior lifters compete in the 20-23 age range, and the new record came on Klatt’s final attempt of the day.

Klatt wore a singlet and a belt when he approached the barbell. After assuming a sumo stance, he grabbed the center of the bar with both hands using a double overhand grip. The bar came up smoothly and quickly until he reached lockout. Pyro went off behind him in recognition of his accomplishment as he received three white lights from the judges.
The lift was 3.58 times his body weight, and his followers may have had an idea this was coming. One week before the meet, he had pulled 800 pounds in training, as he documented on Instagram.

Klatt weighed in at 107.5 kilograms (237 pounds), which was 2.5 kilograms below his weight cap. He went into this meet unopposed in his category, the Men’s Tested Raw Junior (20-23) 110-kilogram class. He went nine-for-nine on the day, and the best lifts for all three movements are below.
- Squat: 325 kilograms (716.6 pounds)
- Bench Press: 185 kilograms (407.9 pounds)
- Deadlift: 385 kilograms (848.9 pounds)
- Total: 895 kilograms (1,973.4 pounds)
All three of the 22-year-old’s best lifts and his total are new personal bests on the platform, according to Open Powerlifting. The previous record was 365 kilograms (804.7 pounds), set by Andrey Belykh in 2016. Klatt’s last event prior to this meet was the 2022 USAPL Junior Nationals in Lombard, IL. This is just his fourth major meet, first WRPF meet, and first world record.
The 2023 American Pro 2 meet continues in Manassas throughout the weekend until Sunday, Oct. 29. Livestreams and replays are available on the WRPF YouTube channel.
