After experiencing what it is like to be the overall leader at the 2023 CrossFit Games, Roman Khrennikov decided that he did not want to let go of his first place. So, with a large desire for the title, Roman left everything on the sunny grass pitch in Madison and won the workout with a time of 12:34. Once the event was finished, Roman did not have the strength to walk, but instead crawled to the nearest fan to cool down.
Unlike the majority of other athletes, Jack Farlow did not mind the sun and the heat since he was able to claim second place in this event. He was the only other man, apart from Roman, to finish in under 13 minutes. Brent Fikowski was also close, but he ended up with a time of 13:21 minutes, which secured him third place.

With Tia-Clair Toomey not even taking part in the 2023 CrossFit Games, we are guaranteed to see a new women’s champion after six years. However, the reigning men’s champion, Justin Medeiros, faced a challenging start to the competition with a poor performance. With his chances of reclaiming the top position seeming slim, the likelihood of a new champion being crowned in the men’s division is quite significant.

The 2023 CrossFit Games started three days ago for Age Groups and Adaptive divisions, but August 3rd marks the first day for Individuals and Teams in Madison, Wisconsin. Day One promises to be extremely exciting, since it consists of a couple technically-demanding workouts. Building up a lead in the early stages has proven to be very beneficial in previous years. So, performing well on day one is undoubtedly very important.
As many know by now, this will be the final year that the CrossFit Games take place in Madison. So, all of the athletes will look to make their final memory here a pleasant one. In addition, as some podium finishers from last year — Toomey, O’Brien, and Garard — have already withdrawn, everything remains open for any athlete on the field.

Day One Workout Recap For Individuals
Ride
The first workout of the 2023 CrossFit Games could not be any more simple. The athletes just had to perform a 40-minute bike race, with the goal of completing more laps than their rivals. After the 40 minutes were up, the athletes raced until the end of their lap. So, for athletes who performed the same number of laps, the time needed to cross the finish line was used to determine the exact position
The length of the lap in total was 2,600 meters, but it was dissected into two parts. One was a 2,400-meter ride on the bike, while the other was a 200-meter run. The circuit also consisted of many turns, as well as some incline portions, which made it much more difficult.

Complete as many laps as possible in 40 minutes on a Trek Bikes Marlin 8 mountain bike.

Women’s Results
After 30 minutes of cycling, it was clear that Emma Lawson would win the event, but the race for second and third place was incredibly tight. While it seemed that Emily Rolfe was secure in second place, a cluster of six athletes followed behind her. With some teamwork between them, they managed to catch up to Rolfe, and it became a sprint race to the end.
However, Rolfe still managed to find a burst of energy and reclaim her second spot in the final moments of the race, beating Emma Tall by just a few seconds.

Men’s Results
Another year brings another amazing start for Jonne Koski, who picked out the max 100 points on workout one of the 2023 CrossFit Games. He is notorious for placing high at the start of competitions in the past few years, but has now reached perfection with an event win. He cycled a perfect race, often riding behind other athletes to reduce the air drag. So, when the last lap came, Jonne was still energized and ready for a sprint in the final meters of the race.
Jonne Koski was a part of a five-man bundle that held together from start to finish. So, it was unclear who would finish in the top three until the final few seconds. Jeffrey Adler ended up in second, while Jay Crouch finished just behind in third.
Surprisingly, the two biggest favorites for the 2023 CrossFit Games, Justin Medeiros and Pat Vellner, had a terrible start to the competition. Both finished near the bottom of the leaderboards.

2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Withdrawals [Live Updates]

2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Withdrawals [Live Updates]

The 2023 CrossFit Games are currently underway in Madison, Wisconsin. Due to the large number of competitors, there are likely to be some withdrawals from the contest. Hopefully, they are reduced to a minimum and all of the competitors get to experience CrossFit’s greatest competition to the fullest. However, some have already been forced to leave the Games due to unfortunate circumstances. So, this article is made to cover every withdrawal from this competition and will be updated adequately.
CrossFit Believe
Just one day before the CrossFit Games began, the CrossFit Believe team was already forced to withdraw. Unfortunately, one of the team members, Josh Mattes, suffered a bad injury while preparing for the Games.
Josh Mattes was just practicing his Handstand-Walk technique in a gym when his hand slipped. He then fell face-first to the floor, which evidently had severe consequences since he was immediately rushed to the hospital. After further examinations, Josh notified his teammates that he wouldn’t be able to compete, as he had to undergo plastic surgery for his face. Josh then revealed that he broke his nose in five places and shared a very explicit photo. You can see the photo here, but be aware if you are sensitive to blood or injuries.
Although CrossFit Believe had notified CrossFit about putting in a substitution for Josh Mattes, they received a negative answer. CrossFit revealed that they had already submitted their lineup for the CrossFit Games and that it was too late to change it.

Another man was on the initial roster for the 2023 CrossFit Games, but will not take part. The man in question is the South African star, Jason Smith. However, it was not his choice, as CrossFit suspended him after he failed his drug test.
No other competitors have withdrawn so far, but some have done so long before the 2023 CrossFit Games started. Those include the 6x Fittest Woman On Earth, Tia-Clair Toomey, as well as some other elite athletes like Mal O’Brien, Ricky Garard, Kara Saunders, and more.

The 2023 CrossFit Games Cuts
Some athletes from the 2023 CrossFit Games lineup will end their campaign early due to the “Cuts” that the organizers will be implementing. A total of two cuts will be made on Friday and Saturday. So, the lineup will be slimmed down to 20 men, 20 women, and 20 teams, on the final day, Sunday, August 6th.

First Cut: The top 30 Men, Women, and Teams, after the competition day closes on Friday will advance, while those who place below will not compete in the remainder of the competition.
Second Cut: The top 20 Men, Women, and Teams, following the conclusion of the competition on Saturday, will advance to the final day, while those placing below will be cut out from the lineup.

Additional Information About The 2023 CrossFit Games
The workouts for the 2023 CrossFit Games have started getting unveiled. However, only four workouts have been revealed so far for the Individual divisions and three workouts for the Teams. Some will not be announced until just a few minutes before they are scheduled to take place, as CrossFit believes that the athletes should know how to make the best of their situation without knowing anything in advance.
In addition, we also saw the first case of a failed drug test for the 2023 CrossFit Games this year, as Jason Smith from South Africa has been kicked out of the 2023 CrossFit Games lineup. His drug test came back positive for two banned substances, but Jason has issued a statement of his own as well.
The organization frowns upon any use of performance enhancing drugs, which is why they will have random on-site testing at the 2023 CrossFit Games. In addition, the top 5 finishers from each division will be drug tested at the end of the competition.

This has been a rough season for many elite CrossFit athletes, which is why we have already experienced many withdrawals from the Games. Those include Ricky Garard, Mal O’Brien, Kara Saunders, Haley Adams, and others.
The woman who has won the last six CrossFit Games, Tia-Clair Toomey, will leave the biggest gap in this year’s lineup. She got pregnant last year, making it impossible for her to qualify for the Games this year. She has since given birth to a baby girl named Willow. So, we will see a new women’s champion crowned after a long reign of Tia-Clair.
On the other hand, Justin Medeiros is coming back in hopes of claiming his third consecutive title. However, he will encounter much resistance from the likes of Roman Khrennikov, Pat Vellner, and many others. So, it is clear that excitement will not lack at the 2023 CrossFit Games.

Jason Smith Issues Statement on 2023 CrossFit Games Provisional Suspension

Jason Smith Issues Statement on 2023 CrossFit Games Provisional Suspension

South African CrossFit athlete Jason Smith has been on the rise in the sport, coming out as one of the greatest athletes in the entire continent of Africa. He’s well known in the region as one of the premiere talents looking to make his mark on the biggest stage. However, his journey took a turn for the worse recently, as Jason revealed some unfortunate news. In a recent post made on Instagram, Smith revealed he got provisionally suspended by CrossFit and barred from the 2023 CrossFit Games after testing positive for two banned substances.
Jason Smith first made waves across the African circuit with his insane athletic abilities which secured him a spot in CrossFit’s biggest competition. He marked his maiden appearance at the CrossFit Games in 2017 and impressed with a top-ten finish overall. Smith qualified for the contest two more times but could not do enough to make the cut on each occasion.
Smith has proven to be one of the most disciplined athletes in the game. He became the highest-ranked athlete in the Men’s (35-39) category in 2019 and led the leaderboard again the next year. Then, he handily dispatched the competition at the 2021 Fittest in Cape Town Semifinal and finished runner-up the following year. He turned in a commanding performance at the 2023 Africa Semifinal, taking the win with 96 points more than runner-up Conrad Winnertz.
2023 CrossFit Games are set to take place Aug. 1-6 in Madison, Wisconsin. The most elite CrossFit athletes will battle it out for the most prestigious titles in the sport. Reigning two-time champion Justin Medeiros targets securing the third title. However, there are some noticeable names missing from the lineup. Jason Smith is a special case this year though, as he is the first athlete so far who qualified for the 2023 CrossFit Games, but will not compete due to a positive drug test.
Mal O’Brien announced her withdrawal from the 2023 CrossFit Semifinals and the entire season two months ago. Although she had been on top of the leaderboard for the majority of the season, she chose to skip the show due to personal challenges.
CrossFit veteran Noah Ohlsen announced his plans to move away from the Individual division to Team and revealed 2023 would mark his final season competing in the Individual category last October.
Reigning Six-time Fittest On Earth Tia-Clair Toomey was targeting to win the seventh title at the 2023 CrossFit Games but took to the sidelines because of her pregnancy in December 2022.
Earlier this year, Haley Adams pulled out of the upcoming Games to focus on her mental and physical health. She opened up about experiencing higher levels of anxiety and battling an eating disorder due to the pressure of getting higher placements. In addition, other athletes like Ricky Garard and Kara Saunders have also withdrawn from this year’s CrossFit Games
Jason Smith Issues Statement on 2023 CrossFit Games Provisional Suspension
In a recent Instagram post, Jason Smith revealed CrossFit suspended him and ruled him out of the 2023 CrossFit Games after he tested positive for two banned substances.
CrossFit announced early Friday morning that Smith “provided a sample at the competition that contained exogenous 5a-androstane-3a,17b-diol (5aAdiol) and 5b-androstane-3a,17b-diol (5bAdiol).
Smith will appeal the decision but remains provisionally suspended and barred from the upcoming games.
“Completely shattered. Speechless and have so many questions,” wrote Smith. “I have been living in a nightmare the past week after receiving a [sic] email from CrossFit to say I’ve failed a drug test almost 2 months after Semifinals, and will not be competing at the CrossFit Games. For anyone who knows me, knows how against using Performance Enhancers I am to gain any advantage in sport or CrossFit. I have competed in CrossFit for 14 years, I own 2 CrossFit gyms, and have only encouraged health and fitness through CrossFit training. There is no reason for me to do this, or current explanation of how this has happened. I am getting legal and medical advice and will be appealing the decision by CrossFit.
“This is not an apology nor am I seeking sympathy. I do however appreciate those who support me during this time as this is something I’ve never imagined to have happened or to deal with, but I will get to the bottom of this!”

Conrad Winnertz was offered to replace Smith but declined due to an injury. It is unclear who will replace Smith at the 2023 CrossFit Games at the time of this writing.
Brooke Wells was forced to the sidelines after not advancing further at the 2023 CrossFit North America East Semifinal two months ago. She later revealed she picked up a foot injury in the first event, which compromised her performance. However the last remaining details for the 2023 CrossFit Games are being fine tuned, as the Individual and Teams workouts for the 2023 CrossFit Games got announced days ago as well.
