Jim Stoppani is a deeply experienced and well educated member of the bodybuilding and fitness community. As an exercise physiologist, he understands the science behind the various training techniques and tactics in the bodybuilding world. Stoppani provided some valuable insight in the original Generation Iron feature film documentary. That’s why we decided to reconnected for a new GI Exclusive mini-series breaking down the science, tactics, and explanations behind bodybuilding and fitness concepts – presented in partnership with Barbend. In our latest GI Exclusive, Jim Stoppani provides a complete breakdown on the benefits and effects of contralateral training and pre-exhaust training.
Contralateral training and pre-exhaust training are two completely different techniques – but bother can be vital tools in your arsenal to reach your fitness goals. Both of these training tactics are a bit less covered compared to the most popular of workout styles. While many bodybuilders may understand how to do both contralateral and pre-exhaust training – it’s important to understand the why behind it in order to fully excel at these techniques. Let’s jump into it.

What is Contralateral Training?
In most simple terms, contralateral training is the concept that training one side of the body can increase the strength of muscles on the other side of the body. It is also known as cross-training although that term has expanded to broader uses over time.

The very concept of this might sound silly. How can training my right arm make my left arm stronger? While this isn’t some sort of miracle concept to save your time and energy on exercising one half of your body – contralateral training can be a valuable tool in fitness and bodybuilding. This is especially true if the athlete faces an injury preventing full training.
How Contralateral Training Works
Jim Stoppani breaks down contralateral training as such. The human body has one heart and one brain. That single brain sends electrical signals to both sides of the body. And that single heart pumps blood to both sides of the body. So when you are training, for example, your right arm – the increased blood flow and brain activity still sends blood and signals to the other side of your body. So in this case – also your left arm.
Stoppani explains that studies have proven, while this will not largely lead to a noticeable change in strength or size for the opposite muscle, it can help prevent or slow atrophy. This makes contralateral training a key technique when an athlete is injured. If you are unable to train your left arm – you should not avoid training your right out of fear of uneven muscle size. In fact, training your right arm will help slow atrophy on the left. Making for less gains to recover after fully surpassing the injury.
What is Pre-Exhaust Training?
Pre-exhaust training is a technique designed to fully stimulate larger muscle parts. More specifically, it’s to help fully exhaust a large muscle part that might otherwise be held back by weaker body parts around it during compound exercises.
Jim Stoppani first explains the how of pre-exhaust training. A typical example of this technique is to do a single joint isolated exercise followed by a multi-joint compound exercise. But why do we do this? What is the added benefit?
By starting with an isolated exercise, you guarantee to focus on exhausting that muscle. This then guarantees that the muscle will also be fully exhauseted afterwards when doing a compound movement.
Jim Stoppani uses this example – if you have weak triceps and only do the bench press exercise, your triceps will exhaust before your pecs do. So you will never full stimulate as much muscle growth as desired via this exercise. By using pre-exhaust training, you ensure that the main muscle being targeted – in this case pecs – gets fully exhausted. Full exhaustion, of course, leads to optimal muscle growth during the recovery period after training.

Does Pre-Exhaust Training Work?
This training technique has been under some scrutiny. Jim Stoppani mentions two studies published concluding that pre-exhaust training doesn’t work. But Stoppani believes that these studies are misleading. The study concluded that the second exercise in pre-exhaust training didn’t work because it led to less muscle activity. But really – that actually proves the technique works. It’s proof that the muscle has been exhausted. An exhausted muscle fires less electrical activity because it’s exhausted.
Jim Stoppani also mentions two longer term studies that analyzed pre-exhaust training. One did not see a difference between the two exercise styles of traditional vs pre-exhaust. While the second study concluded that the technique led to increased strength and muscle growth.
Again, Stoppani believes the first long term study mentioned here is misleading – as the best exercise for a person is, as Stoppani puts it, “The one you’re not doing.” Depending on what training technique you are using – at some point you need to update the variety of your training techniques. This is essential for preventing plateaus.
So in general, when Jim Stoppani is asked what the best training technique is – that wholly depends on the individual. What their body type is, what their experience level is, and what kind of training they have been currently doing. Training techniques are not one and done plans – they have to constantly evolve to what your body needs most depending not he current situation.

And this is exactly what Jim Stoppani wants to ensure that those in the fitness and bodybuilding community truly understand concepts such as contralateral and pre-exhaust training. These are two techniques that are not meant to be your single and only training style. They are tools that you can include into an ever changing cycle of workout plans.
A training style should never be static. Variety is key to preventing plateaus and pushing to new limits. What works for your body now might not work for your body a year from now. You need to adapt and change to further your growth and strength. These tools can now be added into your arsenal for times when these just might be your best option.

Victor Martinez has always been a pro bodybuilder unafraid to speak his mind in a casual and candid way. So after the past year saw a major backlash against bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger due to his “freedom” comments, Martinez was not afraid to speak his mind on not Schwarzenegger’s comments but rather the fan reaction. In fact, Martinez knows all too well what it’s like when fans that supported you suddenly turn on you due to unforeseen circumstances. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Victor Martinez explains why he thinks bodybuilding fans might be the most disloyal compared to other sports.
Victor Martinez previously commented on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “freedom” comments back when it was making viral headlines across the internet. But in our latest interview segment he goes into an even deeper reaction beyond the Schwarzenegger situation. Martinez sees these kind of hyper-reactionary fan comments as a sign of something bigger in the bodybuilding community.

While not the exact same situation per se, Victor Martinez is familiar with bodybuilding fans suddenly turning their backs on him. Unlike Schwarzenegger, this was less due to his direct comments and more due to something outside of his control. Martinez was incarcerated for some time right when his bodybuilding career was flourishing. This put a screeching halt on his progress. He lost a massive amount of weight. Upon returning to the free world, he faced massive criticism due to the state of his physique as he tried to return to his prime shape in the sport.

It’s this kind of reactionary commenting that turns Victor Martinez off. He quickly learned to treat it as white noise and ignore the comments. It was the only way he could confidently march forward and focus on his career. He ignored most of the comments – but from what he was told by friends and fellow athletes – he was nearly betrayed by the loyal fanbase he once had.
This this kind of mob reactionary mentality that Victor Martinez sees more and more in bodybuilding fandom. It’s something that he believes has been accelerated by social media (this of course is true beyond sports and has affected culture as a whole). But it’s also something that he thinks is particularly bad in pro bodybuilding. Perhaps because of the emphasis on judging the aesthetic of physiques.
“Maybe other sports do have better fans than bodybuilding,” Victor Martinez stated in our interview. He continued to explain:
“That’s what brings me to the now of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Of how the fans in bodybuilding are the most unloyal [sic] fans, you know? They can be with you today but come war tomorrow, they’re gone. They aren’t the most stick by you die-hard fans.”
Victor Martinez goes on to say that bodybuilding fans are more focused on “how great you are now” and can quickly change “how they are going to treat you later. It’s very subjective to where you are.”
It’s this kind of reactionary in the moment thinking that taught Victor Martinez to stop caring what other people think. Instead he only focused on the comments that mattered – the comments of judges scoring his physique. It might also explain why he’s willing to be so candid during interviews. He doesn’t worry about the backlash that may come.

Jordan Shallow believes that Regan Grimes simply needs one thing to become an Olympia champion… time and patience.
Regan Grimes has been a promising bodybuilder with an extremely focused mission to become an Olympia champion. His recent move to working with Milos Sarcev signaled just how serious he is about pushing his physique to the next level. There’s no doubt that Regan has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue over the past years – but he has yet to upgrade to that next level. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, The Muscle Doc, Jordan Shallow, shares his analysis on what Regan Grimes needs to become an Olympia champion.
Jordan Shallow is called The Muscle Doc for a reason. And that’s because he is a very knowledgable individual on all things muscle, weightlifting, and bodybuilding. While he’s not a bodybuilding guru per se, he has been an avid fan of professional bodybuilding for quite some time. That combined with his health and fitness knowledge make him a valuable resource of analysis for the present and future of bodybuilding. That’s why we decided to ask him about the hype behind Regan Grimes – and what the future may hold for his career.

Regan Grimes is a pro bodybuilder who has been on an extended hype train. In some ways, his journey is similar to Big Ramy. He continues to turn heads with each year – but ultimately fails to upgrade to that next level when it really counts – at the Mr. Olympia. That’s not to say he is a slouch of a competitor. In fact, the constant hype behind him shows just how impressive his physique is – it just needs that final push into champion status. The same was said for years with Big Ramy until his victories in 2020 and 2021.

So what does Regan Grimes need to go to the next level. With Big Ramy it was always clear – he needed to improve his conditioning. For Grimes it may be the opposite. His conditioning is often fantastic – but his size might not match up to the likes of someone reigning as champion the size of Big Ramy.
Jordan Shallow believes that there is not one specific thing Regan Grimes is doing wrong that needs improvement. In fact, he believes that Grimes is doing everything right. His latest decision to train under Milos Sarcev further proves that point. It shows that – A: Milos sees enough promise in him to spend time training Regan and B: that Regan is ready to push himself to the next level with a legendary trainer such as Milos.
So with that in mind, Jordan Shallow believes that Regan Grimes simply needs time. He’s young, still in his twenties and has plenty of time to gain further muscle maturity, experience, and growth. Big Ramy, by contrast, is in his late thirties. Shallow believes that time will simply benefit Grimes’ physique. Not only that, but the sport itself may also change over the coming years. Eventually Big Ramy will either step down or be taken down from Olympia champion status. Perhaps Grimes will not be the first one to do that. But perhaps when he is ready – the sport will look different than it does today.

In that regard, Jordan Shallow doesn’t believe that Regan Grimes needs to pack on 300 pounds of muscle in order to win the Olympia. He just needs patience, focus, and continued hard work with someone like Milos Sarcev. In time, just like with Ramy over the past decade, Grimes’ strengths will become unstoppable.

Santi Aragon continues to speak out on just how prevalent diuretic use is in bodybuilding… and how consistently dangerous they can be.
It’s no secret that diuretics can be a powerful drug when done incorrectly. It’s also well known that diuretics are used by bodybuilders during contest prep for a show. While there are very few proven incidents with diuretics in bodybuilding leading to death or hospitalization – Santi Aragon believes this is a very dangerous aspect of bodybuilding and a serious health risk for individuals in the sport. That’s why after his retirement he has dedicated himself to speaking openly about the risks many avoid discussing in bodybuilding. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Santi Aragon details the worst experience he had using diuretics and how it nearly put him into the hospital.
After a quite tragic year for bodybuilding in 2021 due to many too-soon athlete deaths, the discussion about health has been highlighted in the sport. While many of these deaths are possibly coincidental – there have been those who have started speaking out about the often unspoken dangers in the sport. Perhaps these recent deaths are unconnected – but the event has spurred a bigger openness in bodybuilding.

The discussion of diuretics in bodybuilding is one aspect that has opened up in recent years. Many big names in the sport have spoken with Generation Iron – including Victor Martinez, Milos Sarcev, and even 8x Olympia legend Ronnie Coleman – on just how dangerous these drugs can be. Now we can also add Santi Aragon to that list.

Santi Aragon made headlines late last year when he announced he would be retiring from bodybuilding at only 33 years old. His reasons were not because of any injury or current health issue – but because he wanted to leave the sport before it started damaging his health long term. Since then – he has been extremely open about the dangers he’s learned about from being a career bodybuilder.
In terms of diuretics, Santi Aragon admits that he has countess stories he’s heard and experienced himself showcasing just how frequent these drugs are used – and how often they can lead to harm. While it may be a small percentage that end up in the hospital or dead – Santi claims there are many close calls that the public never learn about.
One close call was experienced by Santi Aragon himself. He described to us the worst experience using diuretics during his bodybuilding career. He was much younger, 22 years old, and was blindly following whatever his coach directed him to do during contest prep. He removed salt completely from his diet – only boiling his food – and cut down to an incredibly peeled and conditioned physique.  To help further get shredded, Santi also took a diuretic.
Santi Aragon was completely dehydrated – but still not at the weight desired for the competition. So one night before the show, his coach advised him to load with food but no water. This brought salt back into his system without hydrating himself. At the same time, he was still being dehydrated from the diuretic he took as well.
By the time Santi Aragon stepped on stage for prejudging, he was lightheaded and seeing trailing cloudy lights. He was one inch away from passing out. He made it through prejudging – but then found his body overheating. Without any water in his system, he could cool down. He had to sit with his feet in buckets of ice water to regulate his temperature.
Ultimately, Santi Aragon recovered without major issue. But looking back, he realizes that he should have certainly went to the hospital. The situation could have gone far worse. He was lucky. And Santi believes this kind of story happens all the time in bodybuilding. The near-misses that never get publicized. He believes that the issue with diuretics is actually far worse than the public even realizes at this moment. That’s why he wants to speak out about it. It’s reasons like these that made him decide to retire early.

Interview: How Colts LB Darius Leonard Went From Worst Pick To Top Linebacker In The NFL

Darius Leonard, aka The Maniac, discusses his journey to the top of the NFL and his lockdown training routine.
When Darius Leonard first entered the NFL, he was labeled by many sports news outlets as the worst pick of the year. That’s not the kind of attention you want going into your first year in the pro leagues. Fast forward to the end of the season and suddenly Leonard is ranked as one of the best. He was awarded Rookie Of The Year and is now considered one of the top linebackers in the NFL. Certainly a big change in a short amount of time – and a well deserved one at that. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Colts Linebacker Darius Leonard describes his journey from worst pick to Rookie Of The Year and details how he’s training during the countrywide lockdown.
Speaking with Darius Leonard via our video interview call, you wouldn’t expect him to be the kind of player with the nickname Maniac. He’s causal and relaxed despite being on of the best linebackers currently playing in the NFL.
“I have two different personas,” Darius Leonard states in our interview. “When I’m on the field, I’m just that wild and crazy guy who’s just a competitor. And then when I’m off the field I’m just a polite guy, respectful, who’s going to talk to anyone he can.”
That’s the kind of class you want in a top NFL player. He’s aggressive on the field and gets impressive results – but he also represents himself and the sport with candor and respect. But don’t let that fool you, he’s a freight train on the field that seems truly unstoppable. He has a career combined total of 244 tackles and he’s only now just about to start his third year. He’s parlayed his success on the field into a successful social media presence with hundreds of thousands of followers. He’s ready to take over the world.

Of course 2020 is no longer an ordinary year. With the world in crises and the current state of nearly all professional sports in jeopardy for the year, things are still very uncertain for what will happen come the fall and the start of the new NFL season. As of right now, there are no official plans to stop or slow down the season. The NFL has the luxury of not starting until much later this year – so a lot can change.
That being said, this period of time is still an important one for the players and certainly for Darius Leonard. With facilities and gyms closed around the country – how is Leonard keeping himself on point for the upcoming season? How will The Maniac maintain his momentum of becoming the best in the NFL if the entire world is stunted by a society halting crisis?
Again, Leonard keeps his cool and maintains his casual and logical demeanor, not very befitting of the name Maniac. He understands that people’s health comes first and that whatever happens with this season, he will understand that world healing comes before the NFL.
On top of that, he’s honestly not too worried as he’s still able to train at his home. The NFL has sent some equipment for him to train with. He honestly see this as returning to his roots of how he prepped and trained back before his time in the NFL. It’s what got him there in the first place. So he’ll certainly be ready to go whenever things return back to normal.
“The NFL sent some weights and stuff for us to use. And you know I’m from the country so that’s nothing new to me,” Leonard casually states.
“I didn’t have much equipment growing up anyway. I just went back to everything that – my foundation. Pulling tires, pushing tires, flipping tires, running around the field. Working in the yard. That’s the stuff that built me into who I am now. So I just went back to it.”
Darius continues to go into detail about his training regimen and how strength and athletic training differs from the kind of training bodybuilders focus on for competitions. This may be an obvious difference in training tactics – but it’s certainly fascinating to see how one of the top pros in the NFL handles training and prep compared to the top pros of bodybuilding.
We also touch upon a few other topics such as what year a football player hits his prime int the NFL compared to other sports and about the controversial topic of concussions in the sport. Specifically after the film Concussion brought a lot of scrutiny onto the NFL upon its release in theaters.
Ultimately, Darius Leonard ends off our interview focusing on the positives. How grateful he is to be an all star football plater in the NFL only about to start his third year. The younger version of himself would never believe it to be true – as it’s all he ever wanted for his future. He made that future a reality – and how he has his eyes on the Super Bowl. Based on how he’s handled everything else so far – we wouldn’t be surprised to see that coming some time soon.

Stanimal weighs in on the prospective bodybuilders who can possibly defeat Chris Bumstead or Big Ramy in the near future.
Stanimal De Longeaux has the distinction of competing in the Classic Physique division and later moving into Mens Open. So during our latest conversation – we wanted to know his take and analysis on both the current Classic Physique and Men’s Open Olympia champions. Both Big Ramy and Chris Bumstead seem near unstoppable. Is there anyone in each division who stands a chance of taking down one of them in the near future? In our latest GI Exclusive, Stanimal shares his thoughts on who can defeat Chris Bumstead and Big Ramy at the Olympia. 
Both Chris Bumstead and Big Ramy have one major thing in common. Not only are they both reigning Olympia champions, they both are held in high regard as nearly unstoppable compared to their competition. Will Bumstead and Ramy both be reigning Olympia champions for years to come?

We asked this very question to Stanimal in our latest video conversation. Having trained as both a Classic Physique and Men’s Open bodybuilder – he can bring in his direct insight as to who has the goods to take down Chris Bumstead or Big Ramy. Is there anyone who can challenge them in the immediate future? 2022? 2023? Or will it take years before someone can muster up the package to take them down?

The glory of sports is that nothing is impossible. Ronnie Coleman, for example, was seen as a non-threat and suddenly transformed over the course of one year. He then became Olympia champion and held onto it for a total of eight Sandows. Many consider Big Ramy and Chris Bumstead untouchable right now. But that doesn’t mean it’s 100% impossible for them to lose.
When it comes to Classic Physique, Stanimal believes the future will come in the form of the Brazilian athletes. He’s seen many rising stars coming from Brazil that, with a little time, can bring in some huge transformation when it comes to the top tier details. He wouldn’t be surprised if the first person to threaten or even take down Chris Bumstead will be from Brazil.
As for Big Ramy, Stanimal believes the most immediate threat is Hadi Choopan. Stanimal is confident that Choopan can be a Mr. Olympia champion. While his height and overall size might be a hurdle to overcome – his high placing shows just how talented and hard working (and genetically superior) he is in the Men’s Open. Small details can bump him up a few placings. He can see Choopan tilting the scales onto his side and taking down Ramy.
Big Ramy may have slipped slightly in 2021 compared to his 2020 first-time Olympia victory. But that may have been a fluke. If Ramy comes back better than last year and even better than his 2020 physique – Stanimal finds it hard to see anyone beating him in 2022 at least. Of course, like all sports. Anything is possible.

Whitney Jones talks about the temporary disappearance of Women’s Bodybuilding from the Olympia… and how femininity should not matter for the division.
Ever since the early days of Bev Francis in the Women’s Open Bodybuilding division, the debate about femininity in the division has raged on. Francis famously battled back and forth each year attempting to attain what the judges wanted. Did she need to lean out or get bigger? The expectations seemed to constantly change. This issue continued ultimately until the Olympia weekend decided to stop holding the Ms. Olympia competition. It returned in 2020 after a six year hiatus. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Fitness Olympia champion Whitney Jones explains how Women’s Bodybuilding should never be considered a beauty pageant.
Women’s Open Bodybuilding has a problem. Or at least, it had a problem for many decades. Perhaps even since its introduction into the sport. The problem seems two-fold, though both are related. The division can’t seem to get enough competitors (or audience) to engage. Secondly, there is a constant debate on the “femininity” of the physiques in the division.

During our conversation with Whitney Jones, we asked for her thoughts on female bodybuilding as a whole, and the six year forced hiatus that Women’s Open Bodybuilding took away from the Ms. Olympia. Whether it’s on or off the stage, it seems that physique expectations are different for women bodybuilders. There have been many pro bodybuilders who have outright stated that they are not interested in female bodybuilding at all. Why?

Whitney Jones isn’t surprised, but continues to believe that there is a bright future for the Women’s Open division and all female bodybuilding divisions. During our interview, she discusses how ever since she was young, she received comments for her muscular physique. Muscles are deemed “manly” and not something that women should push too far. While that mentality may be changing as culture becomes more “woke” – there are still many who believe that Women’s Open bodybuilding needs to maintain a femininity within the physiques presented on stage.
Whitney Jones doesn’t agree with this. In fact, she outright states that bodybuilding is not a beauty pageant – it’s a physique pageant. The female physiques on stage should be judged exactly even with the men physiques on stage. It’s not about how pretty a woman is. It’s about how perfectly sculpted a woman’s physique is.
Luckily, current Mr. Olympia owner Jake Wood seems to agree. Before owning the Mr. Olympia brand, he ensured that his Wings of Strength competitions always held Women’s Open bodybuilding – even during the six year hiatus away from Olympia weekend. Upon purchasing the Olympia brand, he immediately brought back Ms. Olympia.
Things are looking up for the division for the first time in nearly a decade. But the question remains, will the will of the people (particularly men) be more open minded about the division? Will they help bring a bigger audience and more support to a division that nearly died? That remains to be seen.
With more divisions than ever, women are able to choose which size they want. Much like Men’s Open – most people do not want to be a mass monster. So both Men’s Open and Women’s Open often contain the least number of active pro bodybuilders. For an already struggling division such as Women’s Open, this can create a harder uphill battle.
Whitney Jones isn’t worried – particularly because of the current (and two-time) Ms. Olympia champion Andrea Shaw. She is an excellent ambassador for the sport and truly showcases the excellence that can be achieved in the division. She also holds fantastic charisma. Perhaps this will inspire more to enter the division and excite audience members who have been sleeping on it the past decade.

He’s gone to social media numerous times to criticize the extreme lengths some modern bodybuilders are willing to take for success. De Mey warns that bodybuilders need to start taking further precautions to monitor their health. So it may come as no surprise that De Mey believes his greatest contribution to bodybuilding is tied to health in the sport. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Berry De Mey explains how he is living proof that pro bodybuilding can be healthy.
During our conversation with Berry De Mey, we topped off our interview by asking – what has been your greatest contribution to the sport of bodybuilding? De Mey’s answer focuses less on trophies and awards won and more on his legacy outside of pure competition. He considers his success in the sport to be “a living example that bodybuilding can be really healthy.”

What does he mean by that exactly? De Mey goes on to explain that he was able to build a massive and iconic physique while also focusing on maintaining his health. He’s proof that life doesn’t need to be cut short in order to become a pro bodybuilding success. De Mey worries that bodybuilders today believe there is only one dangerous path to becoming a champion. He hopes that the career he led and the guidance he provides as a coach will help nudge pro bodybuilding into a healthier direction. He’s a proof of concept.

Berry De Mey lays it out directly during our conversation:
“I’m really really convinced that my contribution today is that I can show, I started when I was like 16 years old and in a couple months I’m turning 60 years old. And I think my biggest contribution is that I’m a living example that bodybuilding can be really really healthy.”
De Mey continues by breaking down the biggest difference between healthier bodybuilding of earlier eras compared to bodybuilding today:
“I think the biggest thing is the consistency of the lifestyle… You see a lot of people, they peak for a competition, and they actually, a couple of weeks a year they are in shape and the rest of the year they are not in shape. Maybe in the old days that was different. You know, we were kind of in decent shape all year around. It all pays off now.”
His last comment in the above quote seems to imply that older bodybuilders today might not be living as long if they were following the tactics of modern bodybuilding. There’s now way to know that for sure. But Berry De Mey hopes that his existence in the sport and his continued guidance through coaching will make a difference.
It may be challenging to truly quantify the health statistics of pro bodybuilding compared to the average person – but Berry De Mey believes that bodybuilding could always be doing more to make things healthier.

Bodybuilding icon Tony Pearson details his struggles in childhood and how he discovered bodybuilding.
Tony Pearson is a former pro bodybuilder known for his iconic physique and a career that spanned from the 70’s through to the 90s. But before he was an established pro bodybuilder – he grew up through a tumultuous childhood of poverty, racism, and segregation. In 2019, he published a book detailing his life story. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Tony Pearson details the harsh reality of growing up through poverty, abuse, and racism. As well as how he discovered bodybuilding to escape from his troubled past.
When connecting with Tony Pearson for a video interview, he described his past as something that he some times blocks out and pretends never existed. But those moments are only momentary – because his past did happen. It was a traumatic past full of poverty, abuse, and racism. It was a childhood that felt “normal” at the time because he had nothing else to compare it to. It was only after getting older and expanding his social life that he realized the severity of his past.

In 2019, Tony Pearson published a book, Driven: My Secret Untold Story. The book revealed in great detail the reality of his upbringing. During our conversation, we ask Pearson to recap some of those stories to help further expose not only his harsh reality – but the reality of poverty and racism that has existed in this country and how far we’ve come in some ways and stayed the same in others.

Tony Pearson was born in 1957, so his childhood took place during a period of racial segregation in the United States. Not only that but Pearson was born into poverty. He was ultimately left to the care of his aunt – who did not want to take on the responsibility or perhaps couldn’t bear to due to her own financial struggles. Regardless, Pearson’s entire childhood since the age of three was defined by extreme trauma.
Tony Pearson reveals that he was barely fed food and would sometimes go days without eating a single meal. He was often ignored by his aunt and left to his own devices. During school, he would be taken out of classes for months at a time to work on cotton fields. When he would return, he would be so far behind with his school work that he couldn’t catch up. This all seemed in some ways normal to Pearson at the time. He had no friends and had no comparison to make.
But this isn’t just a story of trauma and struggle. This is a story about overcoming the struggle and becoming the successful man we all know today. Bodybuilding was ultimately an escape for Pearson. An escape into a new world where he could succeed and grow past the struggles of his youth.
By the time he moved to high school, he had the opportunity to meet Muhammad Ali in person. It was an iconic moment and a truly important one. Upon seeing the sheer size and scope of Ali, Pearson was inspired. He wanted to become an athlete.
This led to a path of discovery that ultimately placed him into wrestling. He started training for the sport, developed a love of weightlifting, and slowly developed into a bodybuilder. He knew friends who owned bodybuilding magazines that further inspired him. He now had a direction and hope towards a better future.
