Arnold Schwarzenegger Shares Workout of the Week Using Intense Cluster Sets
Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to inspire generations after an astounding career. In a recent edition of The Daily Pump Newsletter, Schwarzenegger shared an intense workout of the week using cluster sets for added difficulty.
Arnold Schwarzenegger first gained attention in the 1970s and early 80s for his impressive muscle mass, symmetry, and conditioning in the Men’s Open division. He dominated the stages of the IFBB Pro League, winning seven Mr. Olympia titles, and is remembered for epic battles against three-time champion Sergio Oliva, three-time winner Frank Zane, former champ Samir Bannout, and Franco Columbu.
Schwarzenegger emerged as an international superstar following his bodybuilding career. His dynamic personality was on full display in the 1977 docudrama Pumping Iron alongside Lou Ferrigno. The film found mainstream success and elevated the sport to a new level.
Schwarzenegger continued to expand his creative footprint in the world of entertainment after stepping away from bodybuilding. Using the same discipline and work ethic he developed as a competitor, Schwarzenegger established himself as a bona fide Hollywood sensation with lead roles in several blockbuster franchises.
‘The Austrian Oak’ commands a huge following of 23.6 million followers on Instagram. He has not lost his passion for working out and encourages his fans to lead a healthy lifestyle. He suggested the use of about 200-300 milligrams of caffeine as a pre-workout to boost your performance in training sessions.
He added the caveat of not consuming caffeine at least nine hours before sleep to avoid any disturbances. Then, Schwarzenegger detailed a simple yet effective tip to shed pounds by incorporating meal replacement shakes instead of whole foods.
Schwarzenegger recommended the use of wave training to push through plateaus in the gym a few weeks ago. He credited the intensity technique for breaking through training obstacles. He followed that up with a brutal nine-minute core workout that required no equipment. As of late, Arnie detailed the benefits of using bodyweight workouts to build leg strength and improve cardiovascular health.
The 75-year-old gave fans a look into his bodyweight workout of the week to build muscle last month. He stressed the importance of focusing on resistance as opposed to weights for achieving muscle growth. His next workout used Myo-Reps, a training method used by Norwegian strength coach Borge Fagerli, to pack on the pounds.
Arnold Schwarzenegger shares workout of the week using cluster sets
In a recent edition of The Daily Pump Newsletter, Arnold Schwarzenegger shared a grueling workout of the week that utilized cluster sets.
“When time is short, one of the best ways to get in a great workout is by supersetting exercises. That means performing one exercise after another with little rest,” explained Schwarzenegger. “You might have seen Arnold train like this when he performed a chest exercise followed by a back exercise.
“But we like to throw in a little wrinkle to help make you stronger. That’s where cluster sets come in. Cluster sets are just like supersets, but you do multiple supersets within one cluster. This technique allows you to use a heavier weight than you normally would because of how you’re staging the reps and sets.”
Here’s how it works:
Select a weight you can lift for 4 to 5 reps for a push exercise (like a chest press) and 6 to 8 reps for a pulling exercise (like rows). Then do the following,
Set 1: 2 reps of push + 4 reps of pull (no rest)
Set 2: 1 rep of push + 2 reps of pull (no rest)
Set 3: 3 reps of push + 6 reps of pull (rest 3 min)
That’s one cluster. You’ll repeat this a total of two to three times, and then you’re done. Two exercises and you’ll be pumped, your heart rate will be up, and you should feel stronger.
Do the math, and you’re doing 6 reps (with your 4-rep maximum weight) on pushing exercises and 12 reps (with your 6 to 8 rep maximum weight) for pulling exercises.
Cluster 2: Pair a lower-body push exercise (like a squat) with a lower-body hinge exercise (like a deadlift).
Here’s how it works:
Select a weight you can lift for 6 to 8 reps for the lower body push exercise and 12 to 15 reps for the hinge exercise. Then do the following,
Set 1: 4 reps of push + 8 reps of hinge (no rest)
Set 2: 3 reps of push + 6 reps of hinge (no rest)
Set 3: 5 reps of push + 10 reps of hinge(rest 3 min)
That’s one cluster. Just like the upper body workout, do two to three total clusters and call it a day.
Arnold Schwarzenegger offered an alternate version using the same technique for those who prefer bodyweight training routines.
If you’re doing bodyweight exercises, here’s how you can make this plan work for you.
Bodyweight Version
The bodyweight idea is very similar. The cluster sets will help you be able to do more reps than usual. But, because no weight is involved, you’re going to do higher reps. And, we’re going to pair an upper body and a lower body exercise. Here’s how it worksCluster Example: Assume you do pushups for your upper body movements and squats for your lower body movement.
Set 1: 7 reps of an upper body exercise + 7 reps of a lower body exercise
Set 2: 6 reps of an upper body exercise + 6 reps of a lower body exercise
Set 3: 8 reps of an upper body exercise + 8 reps of a lower body exercise (rest 3 minutes)
That’s one cluster. You’ll repeat this a total of two to three times, and you’re done with the first cluster. Then, for the second cluster, you would select two new movements such as bodyweight row and lunges and repeat the process, and then call it a day.
NOTE: You’ll want to do a warmup and build up to these weights with 3 sets of each movement. In all, each cluster should take about 20-25 minutes. So, a cluster can be its own workout. Or, set aside 45 minutes to an hour and have an amazing full-body workout with just four exercises.
Arnold Schwarzenegger provided a convenient 5-minute workout routine that could be performed anywhere earlier this month. He suggested using the workout in the morning to start your day or as a warm-up for a more comprehensive training routine.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Comments On $4 Million Loss Hosting Shows During Covid: ‘I Consider The Past Few Years An Investment’
Arnold Schwarzenegger made comments regarding the status of his show over the last two years.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the best bodybuilders of all-time and remains a huge figure in the sport. Of course, the Arnold Classic is the second-biggest bodybuilding show of the year and a competition that many want to win. During the pandemic, Schwarzenegger kept his show alive and suffered some losses. Despite this fact, he sees it as an investment.
There has been plenty of drama surrounding the decision to exclude divisions in the 2023 Arnold Classic. This includes Women’s Physique, which has seen Sarah Villegas offer her own money to put the division back in the event.
The 2020 Arnold Classic saw a big loss and it was shared by Manager Matt, who was joined by Jay Cutler for a discussion.
“That Arnold — and I asked him that number… they lost four million dollars in 2020 when the Coronavirus happened. How much money did Jake Wood lose putting the Olympia on against all odds? If it wasn’t for two extremely wealthy guys that love bodybuilding — where would be right now?” Matt said.
Arnold Schwarzenegger responded to the video in the comment section and explained that he does not consider this a loss.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Views This As Investment
Matt shared that $4 million was lost during the event in just 2020 alone. Schwarzenegger comments and explained how spending is a loss but he views this as an investment for the future.
“Thank you for the kind words. It was an easy choice. I tell people the most important thing you can learn is the difference between spending, and investing. Spending is a loss, but I consider the past few years an investment in the sport of bodybuilding and our fitness crusade. I also know it was a tough time for a lot people financially and the athletes needed that prize money more than I did,” Arnold Schwarzenegger commented.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has been adamant about improving bodybuilding, whether it be the reputation or health of competitors. He has spoken out many times on different issues, like steroids in the sport and the emergence of Classic Physique.
In the end, Schwarzenegger thanked Manager Matt for his words and understanding the big picture. The Arnold Classic will remain one of the biggest shows of the year and will bring in money moving forward.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Looks Like A Tiny Child Next To André The Giant & Wilt Chamberlain In Throwback Photo
Image via Instagram @schwarzenegger
How do you make 7x Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger look small? Put him next to Andre The Giant and Wilt Chamberlain.
A throwback photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger has gone viral due to the extreme height difference of Arnold compared to Andre The Giant and Wilt Chamberlain. The photo was taken on the set of Conan The Destroyer – but has been resurfaced online and spreading like wildfire on Twitter. At 6′ 2″ tall and over 200 pounds of muscle during his prime – it’s hard to make Arnold look small. Leave it to Andre and Wilt to bring in a true change of perspective.
During his prime, Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of the most accomplished bodybuilders in the sport. With seven Mr. Olympia titles under his belt – he became an instant legend. His physique set the standard for an entire generation of bodybuilders. To this day he is still considered one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. This is a long way of saying that Arnold was a massive man that would dwarf nearly anyone he stood next to.
Unless, of course, he was standing next to Andre The Giant or Wilt Chamberlain. Both of these titans stood over seven feet tall. With Arnold Schwarzenegger at just over six feet – they both had a good foot over the bodybuilding legend. This becomes most clear in a behind the scenes photo from the set of Conan The Destroyer – where all three men stood together for a photo. You can check it out below:
At 6′ 2″, Arnold Schwarzenegger was tall for the sport. Most bodybuilders ran under six feet. So it becomes even more impressive just how tiny Arnold looks next to Andre and Wilt in this photo. Over the years, some have pointed out that by today’s standards, Arnold’s overall muscle mass and size might not stand up to today’s mass monsters. While true, there is no denying that compared to the average person, even today, Arnold in his prime was a massive force.
Andre The Giant was a professional wrestler in the WWE and known for his abnormally massive height at 7′ 4″ tall. He became a sensation and an icon for fans of wrestling and beyond. Wilt Chamberlain was a pro basketball player standing tall at 7″ 1′ tall. He is widely regarded as one of the best basketball players in the history of the sport.
Three legends from three different sports came together for the Conan The Destroyer film. To see these three athletes together at the time was truly exciting for fans of any three of the sports. Now with both Andre and Wilt both having passed away – this photo takes on an even more powerful nostalgic energy. Aided by the humorous effect of Arnold Schwarzenegger looking like a child in comparison.
There are very few people in this world who can make Arnold Schwarzenegger seem small. So it is a gift that this photo exists bringing together three legends. Maybe it’s about time to bring out Conan The Destroyer for another rewatch.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Now Uses Tequila Or Schnapps To Mix In Protein Shakes
Arnold Schwarzenegger says this recipe is superior to using yeast, which he did during his time as a bodybuilder.
Arnold Schwarzenegger remains an influential voice around the sport of bodybuilding after a career that dubbed him as the best to ever do it. However, this might not be something that fans of his will want to follow. Or maybe they will?
Schwarzenegger sat down for a Zoom interview with Insider and was able to discuss many topics around bodybuilding. It came up that Schwarzenegger now likes to mix his protein with different alcohols.
“I add a little bit of schnapps or tequila. Tequila is also good,” Schwarzenegger said.
In a previous interview with Men’s Health, Schwarzenegger shared a recipe that he likes to use for these shakes. It consists of almond milk, cherry juice, a banana, and a whole egg to go along with the protein powder.
“I sometimes put in the schnapps. I sometimes put in the tequila. It just gives it a little extra flavor,” Schwarzenegger said.
How Does This Compare To Protein Shakes Arnold Schwarzenegger Used Years Ago?
Arnold Schwarzenegger began drinking protein shakes at a young age. When he was 15, Schwarzenegger would use a mixer to combine milk, skimmed milk powder, honey, and yeast. He explained that this taste was not a good one and that he now prefers some alcohol mixed in.

Schwarzenegger is currently in Toronto filming a live-action TV series for Netflix entitled UTAP. On set, he has made these protein shakes for his crew and has gotten plenty of positive feedback.
“I’m making protein shakes now for the whole cast. My trailer becomes kind of like a bar where people come by for a protein drink.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger began his career as a teenager when he developed a love for fitness. He quickly built a championship physique that led him to seven Olympia titles. He is considered the greatest bodybuilder of all-time and remains active in the gym to this day.
At 74 years old, Schwarzenegger remains active in the gym and has even dabbled with plant-based diets. Protein shakes with alcohol might become the new craze if people begin taking Schwarzenegger’s word that it is as good as he says.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says Bodybuilding Is “Too Competitive” With Size: ‘They’re Taking More And More Stuff, Sometimes It Kills People’
Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to speak out on the current state of bodybuilding.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has been successful in many avenues over the course of his life. It began when he made a name for himself on the bodybuilding stage and is still known as the best to ever do it. Recently, the seven-time Olympia champion has spoken out about some of the dangers in the sport. This includes an obsession with size and how dangerous it can be.
There has been many bodybuilding deaths over the last year that have hit the sport hard. Shawn Rhoden and George Peterson passed away suddenly at the end of 2021. Cedric McMillan also died in April due to heart complications. In a recent interview with Insider, Schwarzenegger claims that athletes are becoming “too obsessed” with size.
“They have taken it, in my opinion, too far. It has gotten too competitive. They’re gonna take more and more stuff that they’re not supposed to, and sometimes it kills people.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger Touches On Competitors Interest In “Size, Size, Size”
Arnold Schwarzenegger joined Insider over a Zoom call to discuss some topics in the sport. Schwarzenegger remains an influential voice around bodybuilding and continues to focus on his own health to this day.

Schwarzenegger became known for his freakish physique and incredible strength at a young age. Now, he explained how the weight continues to rise in the gym and competitors are doing more harm than good.
“The more extreme it gets and the more competitive the top athletes get, the more they are lifting weights that the body was not meant for,” Schwarzenegger said.
The use of steroids is obviously common in bodybuilding and compared with heavy weight, competitors are able to build championship physiques. But at what cost? This has been the discussion over the last year.
Arnold Schwarzenegger reiterated the health risks around the substances that are being taken.
“Sometimes they are taking drugs that are damaging for their health and are making them so strong that the tendons and bones were not meant for that weight, so then it gets into a really dangerous situation.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger made sure to state that there are plenty of dangers in other sports as well. He used skiing as an example. While it might be a recreational activity for some to do during a vacation, competitive skiing is fast-paced and could be dangerous at times.
Schwarzenegger also believes that the overall benefits of bodybuilding “have been tremendous” around the world. The interest in physical fitness and development of the industry has been huge over the last 50 years.
“There’s a gym in every hotel, every YMCA, every sports club, every university, every college, every high school, every police station, every fire station, every military base, I mean, everywhere.”

Joe Rogan Believes Arnold Schwarzenegger Had “Healthier Look,” Disputes Claim That He Could Not Compete Today
Many are questioning whether Arnold Schwarzenegger would be as successful in modern bodybuilding. Joe Rogan is not one of those people.
It is a common theme nowadays where athletes in all sports from previous generations are being disrespected a bit by the younger crowd. Could Babe Ruth hit the pitching today? Would Michael Jordan be as good as LeBron James if he played now? In bodybuilding, the thought immediately goes to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
From his early days on stage, it was clear that Schwarzenegger has one of the best physiques in the world. He is still considered the greatest bodybuilder of all-time but this has not stopped some recent questions.
Joe Rogan recently discussed if Arnold Schwarzenegger could compete with today’s bodybuilders on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. In his mind, there is no question.
“If you look back at Arnold, look at that picture of Arnold up there. They say that he couldn’t compete with today’s bodybuilders but honestly, I think that looks better.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger vs. Today’s Bodybuilders
Arnold Schwarzenegger burst onto the scene with a massive physique that was extremely shredded for his size. As time went on, this became normal and competitors are getting even bigger. From Ronnie Coleman to Lee Haney to Phil Heath, size and conditioning keeps improving but this does not mean that Schwarzenegger would struggle today.
There is a concern about the use of PEDs in bodybuilding because of a recent string of deaths. Competitors are using different cycles to gain an edge on opponents and in some cases, it can prove to be extremely dangerous. While times have changed, it is clear that Schwarzenegger was using his own substances back in the day. According to Joe Rogan, whatever he did built a physique that was healthier looking than those today.
“He looks f***ing fantastic. I mean, obviously, he’s a bodybuilder. No question about it but I think that’s a healthier look. A better look for a bodybuilder.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger won the Olympia seven times, which is one behind the all-time mark. It is natural for questions to be asked about athletes from a different generation but according to Rogan, Schwarzenegger should remain enshrined as the best to ever do it — no matter what generation he competes.
