Jonathan Cayco (93KG) Secures Bench Press & Total World Records at 2023 IPF World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships
The 2023 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships have been spectacular with multiple records falling and old champions coming back to reclaim their titles. Jonathan Cayco is one of those, as he was the world champion in 2021, but lost the title in 2022. However, he just put up a record-breaking performance to win the 93-kilogram weight class of the 2023 IPF Worlds. In addition, Jonathan also set two new IPF World Records to solidify his greatness.
The first World Record that Jonathan Cayco broke came in the bench press event. This is not surprising since this event is Jonathan’s trademark. He is even nicknamed “Mr. Bench”. So, he ended up locking out 243 kilograms (535.7 pounds) on his third bench press attempt. This was 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) heavier than the previous IPF World Record. The old record was also in the possession of Cayco, who set it at the 2023 IPF Sheffield Powerlifting Championships.

Jonathan Cayco also set an IPF World Record in the Total event as he racked up 888 kilograms (1,957.7 pounds) through all three lifts. So, he once again advanced his own World Record by a margin of 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds). Like the squat, Jonathan set the previous World Record at the 2023 IPF Sheffield Powerlifting Championships.
Jonathan Cayco’s Full Performance
Squat: 300 kilograms (661.4 pounds)
Bench Press: 243 kilograms (535.7 pounds) — U93KG IPF World Record
Deadlift: 345 kilograms (760.6 pounds)
Total: 888 kilograms (1,957.7 pounds) — U93KG IPF World Record
Obviously, having set a new Total World record, Jonathan Cayco also won the 93-kilogram weight class. However, it is still impressive that he won it quite confidently, finishing with a 13-kilogram (28.7-pound) heavier Total than the second place finisher, Gustav Hedlund. Placing third was Emil Krastev, one of the two athletes who placed higher than Cayco in last year’s IPF World Championships.
2023 IPF World Championships — U93KG Men’s Podium
Jonathan Cayco — 888 kilograms (1,957.7 pounds)
Gustav Hedlund — 875 kilograms (1,929 pounds)
Emil Krastev — 872.5 kilograms (1,923.5 pounds)

Five Must-Do Exercises for A Bigger Bench Press
The barbell bench press is arguably the most popular strength training exercise on the planet. Almost everyone who lifts weights includes bench presses in their workouts. When you get two lifters together, invariably, one will ask the other, “Bro, how much can you bench?”
Bodybuilders do bench presses to build chest size, while athletes do them to increase upper-body pushing strength. As well as being a popular muscle and strength-building exercise, the bench press is one of the lifts contested in powerlifting and is occasionally featured in strongman events.
Regardless of why you bench press, most exercisers want to know the secret to lifting more weight. After all, a big bench press can win you major bragging rights. Learn the average bench press by age, weight, gender, and experience level here.
In this article, we share five must-do bench press-boosting accessory exercises.
Five Key Exercises for Boosting Your Bench Press
Has your bench press progress ground to a halt? Do you want to put more plates on the bar? Do you want to score a new bench press one-repetition maximum?
We hear you!
Supplement your bench press workouts with the following must-do assistance exercises.
1. Close grip bench press
Muscles targeted: Triceps, pectoralis major, anterior deltoids.
While bench presses are classed as a chest exercise, your triceps are also heavily involved. In fact, because of their smaller size, the triceps usually fatigue and fail before the pecs during heavy or high-rep bench presses.
Benching with a narrower-than-standard grip means your triceps must work harder than usual. This extra overload should carry over and boost your bench press performance.
Steps:
Lie on the bench with your eyes directly under the barbell.
Hold the bar with an overhand shoulder-width grip or slightly narrower. Pull your shoulders down and back, brace your core, and plant your feet firmly on the floor.
Unrack the bar and hold it over your chest.
Bend your arms and lower the bar to lightly touch your chest.
Drive the bar back up and repeat.
Benefits:
Boosts triceps strength.
Builds a stronger lockout.
More shoulder-friendly than parallel bar dips.
Tips:
Avoid “bodybuilder-style” close grip bench presses where your thumbs are touching. These can cause shoulder, elbow, and wrist problems.
This exercise works best with moderate to heavy weights and low to medium reps, e.g., sets of 4-8.
Lower the bar under control and then drive it up explosively.
Read more on close grip bench press and alternatives.
2. Paused bench press
Muscles targeted: Pectoralis major, anterior deltoids, triceps.
There are several performance-boosting reasons to do paused bench presses. Firstly, they break the eccentric/concentric stretch-shortening reflex, making each rep harder. You’ll need to work MUCH harder to drive the weight up and off your chest. Next, they teach you to be more explosive, so you can blast the bar through your sticking points. Finally, it’s the best way to eliminate bouncing the bar off your chest, which, frankly, is cheating!
Steps:
Lie on the bench with your eyes directly under the barbell.
Hold the bar with a wider-than-shoulder-width overhand grip. Pull your shoulders down and back, brace your core, and plant your feet firmly on the floor.
Unrack the bar and hold it over your chest.
Bend your arms and lower the bar to lightly touch your chest. Do not relax or let out your breath.
Pause for 1-5 seconds.
Drive the bar back up to arm’s length and repeat as necessary.
Benefits:
Good for developing speed and power off your chest.
Keeps each rep honest by eliminating bouncing.
Teaches you how to stay tight and grind out hard reps.
Tips:
Vary the length of your pauses from one second up to five seconds per rep.
Keep your reps relatively low – 3-6 per set is ideal.
Don’t go too heavy too soon; pauses make weights feel much heavier.
3. Floor press
Muscles targeted: Pectoralis major, triceps, anterior deltoids.
A lot of benchers struggle with their lockout. They have no problem getting the bar up and off their chests but are often unable to complete their rep. This is why you should always bench press with a spotter on hand or in a power rack. Floor presses emphasize the last stage of the bench press and can help you improve your lockout strength. As an added benefit, floor presses are also very shoulder-friendly and ideal for banged-up bodybuilders and powerlifters.
Steps:
Set up your barbell in a squat rack set to about knee height or slightly higher.
Lie on the floor with your eyes directly beneath the bar.
Hold the bar with a wider-than-shoulder-width overhand grip. Pull your shoulders down and back, brace your core, and plant your feet firmly on the floor.
Unrack the weight and hold it over your chest.
Bend your arms and lower the bar toward your chest until your triceps lightly touch the floor.
Drive the bar back up and repeat.
Benefits:
Builds a stronger lockout.
Increases triceps size and strength.
Very shoulder friendly.
Tips:
You can also do this exercise with a close grip to increase triceps engagement.
Try this exercise with bent or straight legs to see which you prefer.
You can also do floor presses with dumbbells:
Read more on Floor Press.
4. Wide grip bench press
Muscles targeted: Pectoralis major, anterior deltoids, triceps.
While the triceps are a common weak link in the bench press, weak pecs could also be holding you back. After all, the pectoralis major is the agonist or prime mover during bench presses. Wide grip bench presses deemphasize your triceps, so your pecs have to work harder. This is also an excellent chest-building exercise.
Steps:
Lie on the bench with your eyes directly under the barbell.
Hold the bar so your hands are 3-6 inches wider than your regular bench press grip.
Pull your shoulders down and back, brace your core, and plant your feet firmly on the floor.
Unrack the bar and hold it over your chest.
Bend your arms and lower the bar to lightly touch your chest.
Drive the bar back up to arm’s length and repeat as necessary.
Benefits:
Increases strength and power off your chest.
Good for building bigger pecs.
Reduces your range of motion.
Tips:
Combine this exercise with paused reps for a more intense chest workout.
You can also do this exercise with dumbbells if preferred.
Reduce the weight on the bar; this exercise is more strenuous than it looks!
5. Push-ups
Muscles targeted: Pectoralis major, anterior deltoids, triceps.
The humble push-up might seem like an unlikely way to boost your bench press, but it’s actually one of the best exercises you can do. Push-ups work the same muscles as bench presses, but they’re not as systemically fatiguing, so you can accumulate a ton of volume without detracting from your bench press workouts. Plus, you can modify push-ups to replicate close grip, wide grip, and paused bench presses, so you can do your must-do bench press assistance exercises at home. Bench pressers in the know do LOTS of push-ups!
Steps:
Kneel on all fours and place your hands roughly shoulder-width apart, fingers pointing forward. Pull your shoulders out and back, and brace your core.
Walk your feet out and back so your body is straight.
Bend your arms and lower your chest down to within an inch of the floor.
Drive yourself back up and repeat.
Benefits:
Easy to modify and adapt to suit all strength levels.
Very functional and shoulder-friendly.
You can do push-ups anywhere and anytime, making them the perfect excuse-free bench press assistance exercise.
Tips:
Bring your hands in to emphasize your triceps, or move them out to work your chest more.
Raise your feet to put more weight on your hands. Alternatively, use a weighted vest or resistance band behind your back.
Put your hands on yoga blocks or use push-up handles to increase your range of motion and the difficulty of this exercise.
Bigger Bench Press – FAQs
Do you have a question about training for a stronger bench press? No sweat because we’ve got all the answers!
1. How often should I do bench presses?
To get good at something, you need to practice doing it, including the bench press. So, while a lot of lifters bench press just once a week, usually on a Monday, you’ll improve faster if you hit the bench twice or even three times a week.
However, you should avoid doing so much bench pressing per workout that you’re tired for your next session. Instead, focus on quality rather than quantity.
You should also rotate bench press variations to avoid overuse injuries, plateaus, and boredom, and it’s also a good idea to vary the intensity level and set/rep scheme from one workout to the next.
For example:
Monday
Bench press – 5 sets of 3 reps
Wide grip bench press – 2 sets of 8 reps
Push-ups – 2 sets of 30 reps
Wednesday
Paused bench press – 4 sets of 5 reps
Close grip bench presses – 2 sets of 10 reps
Dumbbell bench press – 2 sets of 12 reps
Friday
Floor press – 4 sets of 8 reps
Bench press – 2 sets of 6 reps
Close-grip push-ups – 2 sets of 25 reps
2. How important is good technique for a bigger bench press?
While brute strength can take you a long way, good bench press technique can add a lot of weight to your lift. Proper bench press form ensures that all your energy goes into the movement and that none is wasted. Tricks like leg drive and elbow tucking vs. flaring can also have a marked impact on your bench press performance.
Good technique is also generally safer and less likely to cause injuries.
It’s beyond the scope of this article to teach you how to bench press correctly, but you’ll find all the information you need here: Bench Press Ultimate Guide
3. How much should I be able to bench press?
Several factors can affect and determine your ultimate bench press performance. For example, long arms and a shallow chest mean you’ll have to lower and lift the weight further than someone with short arms and a barrel chest. As such, some people are built to bench press, while others are not.
Bodyweight, gender, age, and experience can also affect how much weight you can bench press.
That said, there are charts depicting average bench press performance by age and gender, which will tell you how your lifts compare to other people in your demographic.
Check out this article to see how your bench press measures up.
4. Are exercises like triceps pushdowns and skull crushers good bench press assistance exercises?
While pushdowns and skull crushers are great triceps isolation exercises, they may not be the best way to improve your bench press performance. That’s because neither of these exercises works your triceps the way they function during bench presses.
During the bench press, the elbows and shoulders move simultaneously. However, pushdowns, etc., only involve the elbow joint, so they won’t necessarily carry over well to bench presses.
Generally, the best assistance exercises closely replicate the movement you want to improve. That’s why our list of five must-do exercises for a bigger bench press is mostly variations of the bench press.
5. So, I only need to train my chest and triceps for a bigger bench press, right?
While the chest and triceps are the engines that drive your bench press, they don’t work alone. You also need a strong upper back to bench press heavy weights.
During the bench press, muscles including your latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, trapezius, and deltoids, work hard to stabilize your shoulders and shoulder girdle. Any weakness will result in unwanted movement and wasted energy.
As such, as well as training your pecs and triceps, you also need to train your upper back if you want to build a bigger bench press. Good exercises for this purpose include:
Closing Thoughts
The bench press is an emotive exercise, and a lot of lifters want to get better at it. However, good bench press performances don’t happen by accident – you’ll need to train to build a bigger bench press.
The good news is that no matter your current bench press ability, you can improve it. Following a smart, progressive bench press program will help, as will supplementing your workouts with the best bench press assistance exercises. Set some goals, and then crush them.
Include these must-do assistance exercises in your upper body workouts; with time and effort, your bench press will GROW!

16-YO Morgan Nicholls Scores Huge 525-lb (238.1-kg) Raw Bench Press PR In Training
The young prodigy, Morgan Nicholls, got recognized as one of the strongest teenagers in the world during the past years, and he continues to cement his status at 16-years-old. Morgan is extremely versatile which allows him to train American Football and push the limits in the gym. So, most recently, he scored a brand new personal record (PR) in the bench press event having lifted 525 pounds (238.1 kilograms). Morgan accomplished this astonishing feat during a training session.
The video of Morgan Nicholls’ 525-pound (238.1-kilogram) was shared by his father, the legendary Chad Nicholls. Chad is one of the greatest bodybuilding coaches in history, having worked with Ronnie Coleman, Big Ramy, William Bonac, and other elite athletes as well. He was also largely impressed by his son’s bench press which he performed with just a pair of wrist wraps.
“kid is just a working machine and it is very impressive to see him balance training, and all of his football work together – pushing speed, fast twitch, and power all together to do that you have to be very dedicated. – Very proud of him.” wrote Chad.

Morgan Nicholls suffered an ACL tear near the end of last year and underwent surgery on January 6th. Luckily, his recovery was very successful, so he is now able to chase more PRs in the gym and other types of success in American Football.
Apart from his new 525-pound (238.1-kilogram) bench press PR, Morgan Nicholls has done impressive numbers in other events as well. According to him, his heaviest squat to date is 545 pounds (247.2 kilograms), while his deadlift PR is 635 pounds (288 kilograms).
Despite his impressive abilities in lifting heavy weights, Morgan Nicholls does not seem interested in competing in powerlifting. He has, however, taken part in one competition to test the waters and was very successful. He competed in the 2020 SPF GP Summer Smash, where he was only 13-years-old. Despite the young age, Morgan managed to lock out some surreal numbers.
Squat (wraps): 204.1 kilograms (450 pounds)
Bench Press (Raw): 147.4 kilograms (325 pounds)
Deadlift (Raw): 206.3 kilograms (455 pounds)
Total (Raw W/Wraps): 557.9 kilograms (1,230 pounds)

Powerlifting features a 16-17 Years Old age division and the current All-Time World Record for the bench press stands at 501.5 pounds (227.5 kilograms. So, if Morgan Nicholls did cross over to powerlifting once more, it looks like he would set a new World Record with ease. This just proves how impressive his 525-pound (238.1-kilogram) bench PR actually is. In addition, there is no doubt that Morgan will add a few more pounds to the barbell in the near future.

Tiffany Chapon (47KG) Sets 99.5-kg (219.4-lb) Bench Press World Record at 2023 IPF World Championships
The 2023 IPF World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships are taking place from June 11-18, in Valletta, Malta. It did not take long to see the first World Records fall, as Tiffany Chapon put up a record breaking performance on day one. The French representative took part in the 47-kilogram weight class, set a new bench press World Record, and claimed her third consecutive title. So, it was a very successful outing for the 22-year-old Tiffany.
The IPF World Record that Tiffany Chapon set was in the bench press event. She walked confidently onto the stage and locked out 99.5 kilograms (219.4 pounds), thus setting a new record. It was also raw, since the 2023 IPF World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships only featured the raw division.
The previous U47KG IPF Bench Press World Record was also held by Tiffany Chapon and it stood at 96 kilograms (211.6 pounds). She set the record at the 2022 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships. So, in just one year Tiffany managed to further improve the record by 3.5 kilograms (7.7 pounds).

Tiffany Chapon put up solid performances in other events as well, but the bench press was the only World Record she managed to set. She opened up her performance with a 157.5-kilogram (347.2-pound) squat, and then impressed everyone with her bench. However, she then added a 167.5-kilogram (369.3 pounds) deadlift to secure the title.
In the end, Tiffany Chapon’s Total came out to 424.5 kilograms (935.9 pounds), which is just 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) shy of her last year’s result.
Tiffany Chapon’s Full Performance

This was Tiffany Chapon’s 15th sanctioned powerlifting appearance and her 11th victory. Furthermore, she is now a 3x IPF World Champion and a 3x EPF European Champion. Tiffany also holds a number of Open and Junior World Records.
Tiffany Chapon was once again quite dominant, having easily won the title. In addition, she further improved her own World Record, as well as brought the first gold medal for France at the 2023 IPF Worlds. She will now hope to defend her European Title in a few months as well, which looks like the most realistic outcome currently.

Larry Wheels Crushes 405-lb (183.7-kg) Bench Press For 22 Reps
Larry Wheels recently revealed on Instagram that he is looking and feeling better than ever, and is now proving the statement to everyone. Although Larry is preparing for a bodybuilding competition where he plans to take part in the Classic division, he is still attracted to lifting heavy weights. However, in order to find the right balance, Larry recently loaded up 405 pounds (183.7 kilograms) on the barbell and performed a bench press for a mind blowing 22 repetitions.
Larry Wheels partnered up for a workout with one of the strongest bench pressers in the world currently, Josh Baker, who accumulated fame on TikTok due to his incredible feats. So, with some crowd cheering him on as well, Larry managed to push himself to the limits and squeeze out 22 repetitions on a 405-pound (183.7-pound) bench press with just some elbow straps to aid him in the lift.
Interestingly, Larry Wheels has performed a bench press AMRAP with 405 pounds (183.7 pounds) before, and his greatest result was 26 repetitions. However, as almost everyone knows by now, Larry has stopped using steroids and slimmed down significantly. So, his recent 22-rep set is arguably even more impressive.
Watch Larry Wheels’ lift here:

Ever since he stopped using Steroids and PEDs, Larry Wheels has been attempting to reach the peak of his natural strength, performance, and physique. However, he is forced to take TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy) since his body does not produce testosterone on its own anymore.
The current goal which Larry Wheels has in mind is to make his debut in the Classic Physique division. He has opted for Classic because he already has the size needed for it. In addition, both Larry and his coach believe that he will not need to take anything except TRT to be competitive.
Larry Wheels has already achieved an extremely shredded physique, with his most recent update displaying an impressive vacuum pose.
Before setting his sights on the bodybuilding venture, Larry Wheels tested to see how strong he could get with just TRT. So, after a few months of training, Larry organized a mock powerlifting meet in his gym and put up impressive numbers. This included a 330-kilogram (727.5-pound) squat, 230-kilogram (507.1-pound) bench, and a 350-kilogram (771.6-pound) deadlift.
So, with experience in powerlifting and bodybuilding, Larry Wheels has also decided to venture into coaching. Most notably, he took IFBB Pro Joe Mackey under his wing to help him accomplish a 1,000-pound (453.6-kilogram) goal.

Powerlifter Samantha Eugenie Scores 122.5-kg (270.1-lb) Raw Bench Press PR In Training
It is remarkable that Samantha Eugenie, who is just 20 years old, is bench pressing more than the majority of her male peers. She is also locking out these massive weights despite weighing around 70 kilograms (154.3 pounds), thus demonstrating how strong she is. Samantha’s impressive bench press lifts have almost reached 2x her bodyweight, as her most recent bench press PR has marked a significant improvement. She set the personal record during a training session which saw her reach new heights with a 122.5-kilogram (270.1-pound) bench press.
As can be seen in her Instagram story, Samantha Eugenie first set a personal record with a 120-kilogram (264.5-pound) bench press. However, the ease at which the weight moved gave Samantha some motivation to attempt an even heavier lift. So, she loaded up 122.5 kilograms (270.1 pounds) on the barbell and grinded it out.
Due to the fact that Samantha Eugenie competes in the raw division of powerlifting, she only used wrist wraps to relieve the pressure on her joints while lifting.

Samantha Eugenie is undoubtedly one of the greatest Junior powerlifters in the world, as she has won numerous titles in the past few years. Most recently, Samantha competed in the 2023 French Junior Nationals and won the 69-kilogram weight class with ease. It is important to note that she set her bench press competition PR of 110 kilograms (242.5 pounds) at this competition, but is now already capable of lifting much more.
During Samantha Eugenie’s five years of competing, she has achieved some amazing things. However, those that stand out are her victories at the 2019 Sub-Junior & 2022 Junior IPF World Championships. She has also won three National titles, making her one of the greatest athletes in France. Overall, she has taken part in 12 sanctioned competitions and won nine of them.

Analyze Lifts
Samantha Eugenie appears to be preparing for the 2023 Junior IPF World Championships, and given the fact that they will be held at the end of August, it is clear that she will improve even more than she is right now. So, it is very impressive to see Samantha set a new 122.5-kilogram (270.1-pound) bench press PR being three months out from her next appearance. Powerlifters usually improve the most as they get closer to a competition, but Samantha is determined to improve significantly, which is why she is already chasing PRs.

List of All-Time Powerlifting World Records In Raw & Equipped Divisions
Throughout history, there has always been a fascination and sense of satisfaction in witnessing people demonstrate their incredible strength. However, it was during the 1950s that the sport of powerlifting truly took off and captured the attention of enthusiasts worldwide. Since then, powerlifting has become increasingly popular and is currently enjoying its highest level of recognition and interest. So, we decided to make a list of every All-Time World Record in raw and equipped divisions.
Powerlifting consists of dozens of federations who host their own competitions and have their own records. On the other hand, the phrase “All-Time World Record” has a specific meaning when it comes to powerlifting records. It stands for the most weight that has ever been lifted successfully in a competition that was sanctioned by any international federation. This indicates that the record is acknowledged on a global scale and is not restricted to a particular organization or area.
There are four events in which an athlete can set an All-Time World Record, and those are the Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, and Total. In addition, there are raw and equipped divisions, as well as multiple weight classes.
“Raw” powerlifting competitions typically allow athletes to wear lifting belts, singlets, wrist wraps, knee sleeves, and chalk. On the other hand, equipped powerlifting allows the use of pieces of equipment which have a much more significant impact on the weight of the lifts. Examples of “equipped” powerlifting are bench press shirts, squat suits, knee wraps, and more.

72-YO Powerlifter Shelly Stettner Scores New Raw 265-lb Squat & 155-lb Bench Press All-Time PRs
Among the greatest Masters powerlifters in the world, Shelly Stettner founded the belief that no one is ever too old to become the best in what they want. Now, she is once again continuing to prove her statements, having just landed new squat and bench press Personal Records (PRs) at the age of 72-years-old. In addition, Shelly shared both of her new achievements on Instagram.
The first PR that Shelly Stettner locked out was the squat of 265 pounds (120.2 kilograms). She did so by putting on a pair of knee sleeves and a lifting belt, dropping under the barbell, and easily squatting 265 pounds (120.2 kilograms).
Shelly Stettner then scored another personal record on the bench press. After a few warm-up sets, Shelly ramped up to a 155-pound (70.3-kilogram) bench, the heaviest she has ever lifted. Although it did not look as easy as her squat PR, the bench press still looked quite comfortable for Shelly.
