Breon Ansley‘s exit from the Classic Physique division may be short-lived after all. On Monday, IFBB Vice President Tyler Manion announced an across-the-board weight increase for athletes in Classic Physique, with shorter statures afforded an extra seven pounds. In a recent Instagram post, Ansley reacted to the news and teased a possible return to Classic Physique.
“It does get interesting! The increase in the weight cap would put me at 187lbs guys; however, I might not have to cut water so heavy so I could weigh in at 192lbs because I wouldn’t lose as much height! Definitely, something to sleep on!” Breon Ansley shared.
‘The Black Swan’ reached the pinnacle of his career in 2017 when he captured his first Classic Physique Olympia title. Sporting one of the best backs in the sport, Ansley proved himself countless times on stage against elite talent. But it’s not just Ansley’s back that makes him so imposing, it’s how he presents his physique on stage through artful posing and seamless transitions.
In 2018, Ansley became a two-time Classic Physique Olympia champion. However, his rival, Chris Bumstead, finally caught up to Ansley in their next outing. Bumstead, who boasts a tall frame and shapely X-frame, has since held the crown. Last December, Ansley returned to the 2022 Mr. Olympia for a final push to dethrone ‘Cbum.’ In the end, Ansley fell short in fourth. He later mapped out a move to Men’s 212 Bodybuilding because he felt he was losing excessive muscle by cutting weight for the Classic Physique division.
Even though he’s yet to finalize his next show, fans, and bodybuilders expect Ansley to make a statement should he follow through on his 212 splash. In preparation for the jump, Ansley has offered glimpses into his new diet. He hopes to gain 10 pounds of muscle for the transition. Although now that Classic Physique allows for another seven pounds, Ansley admits he’s got some thinking to do.
Breon Ansley Teases Classic Physique Comeback After His Weight Limit Increases by 7 Lbs
According to Ansley, the new weight change would result in an “entirely different look.” He intends to discuss the matter with his team before jumping to any conclusions.
“Yes, yes I have heard the news. Pretty ironic how I’m in here practicing posing, looking at everything, looking at the checks and balances. And I hear the news that they are upping the shorter heights in Classic by seven pounds.
So, that does make a difference for me ladies and gentlemen, absolutely, it would be an entirely different look for me on stage… and I will discuss it with the team to see where we stand, to see what decisions we make because of it. Alright? Love you guys, thank you for all the messages, thank you for the support. Love y’all. We’ve got to get back to work still… regardless of what we’re going to do,” Breon Ansley shared.
Given his issues with the Classic Physique weight cap in the past, many assume Ansley could find success in the 212 category. In fact, reigning four-time Classic Physique Olympia Chris Bumstead said years ago that he thought Breon’s rightful place was in the 212 division.
Aside from Classic Physique, Tyler Manion also announced changes to the Men’s Physique class earlier this year. They implemented a new height/weight cap restriction, which was put in place to prevent Men’s Physique athletes from rivaling the size of Classic Physique competitors.

As a former Olympia winner, it’s hard to imagine Breon Ansley won’t deliver fireworks in a potential 212 Bodybuilding venture. Having prepared months for this transition, Ansley has yet to decide if he will change course and return to his old division. However, if he intends to step on the Olympia stage as a 212 athlete, he must win a Pro show before October 9.

American bodybuilder Breon Ansley made a name for himself with his insane conditioning as a Classic Physique competitor. He’s currently gearing up for a switch to the Men’s 212 division in his next outing. In a recent YouTube video, Ansley laid out his full day of eating 20 weeks from the 2023 Mr. Olympia.
Breon Ansley first rose to prominence for his refined muscle quality and symmetry in the Classic Physique division after taking home the top prize at the 2017 Mr. Olympia. He extended his reign of dominance with a stunning victory at the 2018 Arnold Sports Festival before securing his second Olympia title by defeating future champion Chris Bumstead at the 2018 Mr. Olympia.
Ansley fell out of favor with the judges in 2019 as Bumstead dethroned the former two-time champion. After picking up two consecutive bronze medals over the next two years, there was speculation about whether Ansley was eyeing a move out of Classic Physique.

In a recent YouTube video, Breon Ansley shared his full day of eating while in prep 20 weeks out from the 2023 Mr. Olympia. He had been following the diet for four weeks and plans to continue it for another four weeks and tweak it based on the results.

Bodybuilder Breon Ansley recently teamed up with fitness influencer Tristyn Lee for an intense back and biceps workout. Ansley is readying himself to venture into the new division in 2023 and this workout was a step in the direction to get the right body composition.
Breon Ansley is an American professional bodybuilder that has competed in the IFBB Pro League’s Classic Physique division for the majority of his career. He is a former Classic Physique Olympia champion and won the title at the 2017 and 2018 Olympia. After getting dethroned by Chris Bumstead at the 2019 Olympia, the 43-year-old continued to hover around the title picture and finished in the top five at the 2020 and 2021 Olympia. However, the 4th place finish in 2022 prompted Ansley to bury the hatchet and pass on the torch to Chris Bumstead. As decided earlier, the 2022 Olympia proved to be Ansley’s final Classic Physique appearance and he made the decision to move on from the weight class.
Although he has competed in the 212 division during the early stage of his career, Ansley is once again working hard to get the necessary body composition to make a move to 212 division in 2023. Unlike the Classic Physique division, the 43-year-old would not have to sacrifice any muscle mass to compete in the new weight class. As a result, Breon Ansley is confident that he will win the 2023 Olympia.
As a part of this effort, Ansley teamed up with fitness influencer Tristyn Lee for a back and biceps workout. Lee became notorious in the YouTube fitness community for carrying minimal body fat. He is known for his ripped physique and maintains the stance that he has been natural his whole life. In recent months, Lee has teased a venture into competitive bodybuilding.

Ansley and Lee utilized the rest pause training method for all the exercises in this training session. The duo performed only one working set per exercise but focused more on adding mass, width and depth to the back and biceps muscles.
Pull-ups
Being the more experienced of the two, Breon Ansley led the workout as Tristyn Lee followed in his footsteps. They started the training session with four sets of pull-ups to warm up the back and biceps.
“Pull-ups and dips always kick that a**. But it’s always a good measuring stick too as I am going up in body weight… To keep that strength up… Keep that strength up, keep those numbers up and keep those reps up,” Breon Ansley said about pull-ups.
After finishing all the sets of pull-ups, the duo took to the first heavy compound movement of the day.
Hammer Strength Low Rows
Ansley and Lee performed hammer strength low rows next to work the back muscles. This compound movement primarily targets the latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, middle and upper trapezius muscles in the back. Apart from muscle building, it is an essential movement to improve the upper body posture.
“Don’t need to keep count as long as you’re confident you know you went till that very last drop. Just ensure that and you’re good,” Breon Ansley said about rep range.
The training partners cranked out solid sets of low rows next and took to another rowing movement next.
Cable High Rows
This cable machine rowing movement followed next as Ansley and Lee added more stimulus to the back muscles. Horizontal pulling movements/rows are effective in building a thick back and hence it is of utmost importance to include them in the training routine for complete back development.
In particular, cable high rows also work the latissimus dorsi, rhomboid as well as trapezius muscles in the back and they protect the shoulders while reducing the risk of injury during upper body exercises.
Ansley cranked out solid sets of cable high rows next as Lee followed the suit. The duo then took to a traps-focused exercise next.
Dumbbell Shrugs
This simple but effective exercise is an excellent mass and strength builder for the trapezius muscles. Apart from the bigger and stronger look, well-developed traps aid in scapular functions and help protect against neck injuries.
Ansley and Lee pushed through heavy sets of dumbbell shrugs next and shifted their focus to working the biceps.
EZ Bar Curls
EZ bar curl offers distinct advantages over standard barbell due to its curved shape as it enables a more natural and neutral wrist position. This exercise primarily targets the biceps brachii muscles and helps build strength and muscle mass. But it also activates the brachialis and brachioradialis muscles as well.
Ansley and Lee performed a few sets of EZ bar curls next and took to the final exercise of the day.
Dumbbell Preacher Curls
Dumbbell preacher curls are arguably the most effective exercise for biceps isolation. The triceps are firmly pressed against the pad during this exercise and the shoulder is neatly tucked against the edge of the pad. As a result, biceps are forced to lift the weight unassisted, increasing strength and muscle gain. The duo performed some solid sets of dumbbell preacher curls next and wrapped up the training session.

Reigning champion Shaun Clarida will be the main hurdle standing in Ansley’s way of winning the second division title. Breon Ansley enjoyed an illustrious career as a Classic Physique competitor with two Mr. Olympia wins. He’s currently gearing up to make a splash in the Men’s 212 division. In a recent interview with OlympiaTV, Ansley shared his thoughts on the target weight and strategy he plans to use for a successful debut in the 212 category.
Breon Ansley first gained attention for his impressive muscle mass, detail, and conditioning in the IFBB Pro League Classic Physique division. Although he dabbled in the 212 class early in his career, he ultimately chose to compete in the Classic Physique division. He dominated the competition at the 2017 Mr. Olympia to win his first Sandow trophy and added a successful title defense the next year along with an Arnold Classic title. In 2019, he got dethroned by reigning four-time Olympia champ Chris Bumstead who has firmly held onto the crown since.
Following a fourth-place finish at the 2022 Arnold Classic, Ansley announced his plans to move on from the Classic Physique division. He was working on bringing a revamped package for his final Classic appearance and indicated a potential move to the 212 group.

In the end, Bumstead retained his title and Ansley dropped to fourth place. Following the event, the pair buried the hatchet after sharing a six-year-long rivalry on stage in a candid exchange.

In a recent YouTube video, Breon Ansley shared the weight he’s aiming for in his 212 class debut.
He believes adding roughly 10 pounds to his frame could help him present a new look.
“I don’t need to be a lot bigger,” said Ansley. “If I’m doing the calculations of where I’m at now and where I’d need to be to be as sharp as a tack when it comes stage time, I’d probably say that’s going to be around 200 pounds. That’s quite a bit of more pounds when you’re talking about around 10 more pounds of muscle mass when it’s able to formulate properly and not have to suffer the loss of muscle like it was with Classic. I think it’s going to be around 200, maybe even 205. I think it’s going to be quite a different look.”
Ansley reveals the strategy for the switch to 212
Without the restriction of his previous weight cap, Ansley is confident he will look his best as he won’t need to sacrifice any muscle mass.
“Now that I’m really going to be able to see my true potential, my true density that I have been lacking over the past two years in Classics so as far as density that they might outmatch me on, I’m going to have to disagree because I think once I’m able to not lose muscle, not lose a single solitary pound of muscle and hold onto all my muscle from all these hard ass Chris Cormier years of training then the density factor… remember I’m just as old or even older than some of these guys so my maturity is right there with them and I think that I can outmatch theirs. I can definitely beat theirs and dominate as far as maturity and density.
“I’m going to be a lot sharper now that I’m not going to have to lose muscle. I’m going to be able to get sharp, refined by holding onto muscle instead of losing it. You thought I was sharp and in fairly great conditioning in Classic, just wait till you see now the sharpness and the lines that I’m going to be able to display in the 212 division now that I can hold onto muscle and not kill myself with hours and hours of cardio.”
He declared his ambitions to score gold at the upcoming 2023 Mr. Olympia.
“Yes, I am winning it in 2023.”
Breon Ansley gave fans a look into his full day of eating in the 2023 off-season last month. He added that he consumes one meal of his choice per day and laid out the diet he was utilizing to pack on the pounds before entering prep for his next show.

Ansley kicked off the 2018 season with a commanding victory at the Arnold Sports Festival en route to a successful title defense at Mr. Olympia. Bumstead inched closer but could not do enough to overwhelm the two-time champion. In 2019, Ansley finally got dethroned by ‘CBum’ in a close-fought battle and took silver. Bumstead held on to the title ever since.
The 43-year-old missed the mark at the 2022 Arnold Sports Festival, settling for a fourth-place finish last year. Meal 1 (8 am): 4 whole eggs & 150g cream of rice (sometimes, he mixes in 25g of ISO whey protein).
Meal 2: 10pc chicken nuggets, medium fries, crispy chicken plain burger.
Snacks: cashews, almonds, macadamia nuts, or rice cakes with peanut butter.
Meal 3: 7oz salmon and 150g of cream of rice.
Meal 4: 6oz chicken and 150g cream of rice.
Protein shake (25.5g protein).
Meal 5: 6oz bison and 120-130g sweet potatoes.
Breon Ansley had a heartfelt conversation with Chris Bumstead following the 2022 Mr. Olympia, where he placed fourth while Bumstead secured his fourth title. They both lauded each other as Ansley passed on the torch to Bumstead, bringing a decisive end to their competitive rivalry.

Breon Ansley Maximizes His Leg Sessions by Attacking Them With High Energy
As the 2022 Olympia weekend on Dec. 16-18, 2022, in Las Vegas, NV, approaches, two-time former Classic Physique Olympia champion Breon Ansley anticipates bringing the best package of his career to the stage for his final appearance in the division. Following the Olympia, the 43-year-old Ansley plans to move into the 212 division.
To present his best physique to date — meaning more muscle mass and tighter conditioning — Ansley’s strategy for workouts during his prep has been to attack them with high energy from the jump. Diving into his training aggressively rather than passively enables Ansley to squeeze more potential out of each workout. Ansley’s leg session in the video above occurred four weeks and one day out from the 2022 Olympia. He opened the workout with a warm-up consisting of single-leg extensions.
Set the tone right off the bat and don’t look back.
Although he didn’t specify the number of sets he performed on the leg extension machine, Ansley appeared to take each set to failure with a progressive overload methodology. He continued his unilateral training on the leg press. Ansley spotted his working leg with his resting leg to achieve maximum flexion and a clean lockout to keep the load heavy. Based on his foot placement towards the middle-lower section of the platform, Ansley biased his quads with each rep.

Ansley’s third movement was weighted Bulgarian split squats. He posted one leg on a weight bench and held one 35-pound dumbbell in his hand adjacent to his working leg. The pacing of Ansley’s reps was highly measured. If you turn the video to two-time-speed, it still appears his movement is slow and controlled.
Each rep involves Ansley reaching maximum knee flexion with a forward tilt of his torso to train his glute in the fully lengthened position. If he kept his torso upright, he would bias the quads more than the glutes.
Stiff-leg Romanian dumbbell deadlifts were up next with a five-three tempo per rep — five-second eccentric and three-second concentric. The dumbells moved at a slight angle along Ansley’s legs rather than directly in front. This relieves pressure off Ansley’s lower back and falls more naturally in line with his structure. His flexibility was on display as each rep saw the dumbbell handles nearly touch the tops of his feet.
To remove his grip as a limiting factor, Ansley used lifting straps to increase the load with each set progressively. His final set was with a pair of 85-pound dumbbells.
Moving on to hamstrings, lying leg curls followed the deadlifts. He braced tightly to the pad to prevent his hips from rising, which would relieve tension from his hamstrings. He closed the workout with seated calf raises.
Ansley mentioned that he recognizes how much more developed his legs appear this season than last season. We’ll see if that added mass can convert a record-tying third Classic Physique Olympia title for him before the holidays.

The Speakeasy Gym in Pasadena, CA, was the training outlet for former two-time Classic Physique Olympia champion Breon Ansley on Nov. 10, 2022, for a shoulder and arm workout with six weeks to go before the 2022 Olympia. The grandest competition in the sport is scheduled for Dec. 16-18, 2022, and Ansley will compete as a Classic Physique competitor for the final time before moving up in weight to compete in the 212 division.
The workout at the Speakeasy was unique to Ansley’s prep as it was early in his caloric cut to lean out for the Olympia. Ansley says training on fewer calories (read: less energy) involves “embracing the pain.” Check out his training session in the video below:

Six is nothing to go through some pain, struggle, and exert some grit. That’s what’s going to make us the best in the world.
Pause sets and an emphasis on muscular endurance were the focal points of this session. While running on fewer calories, adaptations in the gym need to be made to prevent injury. Ansley opted not to increase the weight of each set too significantly as his strength is naturally lower while consuming less food.
The first movement was hammer grip dumbbell front raises. Ansley wore his lifting belt to support his bracing. Once he pre-exhausted his delts, he continued the set by switching to lateral raises. He continued his triset by leaning forward while sitting on the weight bench to perform dumbbell rear delt flyes.
The rear delt flyes could be performed by bending over while standing, but performing them seated offers better stability. That additional stability enables Ansley to move more weight without going too heavy, as the energy he would spend to brace himself while standing is removed as a limiting factor. These seem like small changes but can make a significant difference when detailing his physique.

Moving away from the dumbbell rack, Ansley hit sets of shirtless dips. He performed them in a more upright position to bias the front delts rather than the pecs and triceps. The trade-off was significantly less range of motion so as to not impinge his shoulders.
Once all the dips were done, Ansley ventured to the cable rack to perform upright rows. Noticeably, his form involved maintaining a decent distance between him and the cable. Typically, this movement is done by rowing the cable near the collarbone. However, Ansley hoisted the cable in front of him, mimicking the movement patterns of front raises.
Once his shoulder training was complete, Ansley continued by training his biceps via EZ-bar curls. He superset them with reverse grip curls to add density to his arms. Hammer curls and triceps pushdowns closed out the session.
Ansley ranked third at the Classic Physique Olympia in 2020 and 2021, behind runner-up Terrence Ruffin and three-time reigning champion Chris Bumstead. If Ansley recaptures the throne in December 2022, he would tie Bumstead for the most Classic Physique Olympia titles of all time.

Breon Ansley is looking massive in his most recent physique update, a move to 212 could be in the future.
Former Classic Physique Olympia champion Breon Ansley is looking insanely massive in a recent physique update, suggesting a move to the 212 division could be imminent. Ansley recently showcased his new form at the NPC Alabama State Championships in a guest posing spot.
Sometimes change is necessary to achieve real growth. Rather than remain in one place for too long and get stagnant, choosing a new path can lead to massive improvements. It appears that Breon Ansley is taking this approach as he continues his bodybuilding career.
The once reigning Classic Physique Olympia champion who appeared to have a stranglehold on the division, Breon Ansley has since been dethroned. Ansley gave it his all and even challenged Chris Bumstead for the throne once again. Unfortunately, Ansley was unsuccessful in his bid and has since found himself at a crossroads. Rather than give up on bodybuilding however, it appears that Ansley is choosing a different path.
Rather than pack it in and retire, it appears that Breon Ansley is seeking to reinvent himself. While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, Ansley could be heading to the 212 division. The former Classic Physique king has recently packed on a considerable amount of muscle. The choice suggests that Ansley could be choosing to switch division as he looks far more massive than usual.
Massive Gains
Breon Ansley recently appeared at a guest posing at the NPC Alabama State Championships. Ansley took to the stage and showcased a new and heavily muscled frame for the event. The amount of muscle he’s walking around with has sparked the idea that the 212 division is in his future.

It’s clear that Breon Ansley has gained a tremendous amount of muscle, adding some extra protein to his diet no doubt. What’s not so clear is whether he’ll be moving to the 212 division or not. While it’s still only speculation it does appear to be a feasible move for the former Classic Physique Olympia champion.

Breon Ansley Deep Into Training For Tampa Pro With Huge Arm Day
Breon Ansley is looking to win the Tampa Pro and gain momentum into the Olympia.
Breon Ansley is a former two-time Classic Physique Olympia champion. He is currently preparing to compete in the Tampa Pro and put together a massive arm day during one of his training sessions.
Ansley has finished third in each of the last two Olympia competitions. In 2019, he saw his two-year win streak come to an end at the hands of Chris Bumstead. Most recently, Ansley finished fourth at the Arnold Classic and was unhappy with his performance.
Classic Physique is a division that is gaining popularity and seeing many elite athletes emerge. Ansley is still at the top of his game and wants to show it off on the biggest stage once again. Before this happens, Ansley is looking to win the Tampa Pro and is full or dedication and motivation.
“I’m trying to win this damn thing this year.”

Breon Ansley took down this workout at the legendary Gold’s Gym in Venice, CA. Ansley begins the video by explaining how it is important to focus on recovery and training smart.
“Be careful, guys, with everything. Be careful but be smart. Train smart. Train hard but train that ass to be smart so you can come in here the next day and the next day and the next day and the next day. Who cares about what you’re doing for that one damn day if it puts you out?”
Triceps Training
Breon Ansley begins his workout with machine tricep extensions, the first of five consecutive triceps exercises. This is the way Ansley likes to train arms so you have a constant pump in the muscles targeted.
“I like to train triceps all in one and then start with the biceps. I don’t like to mix up, some guys like to do biceps triceps, biceps triceps and alternate like that. I don’t like to do that because you lose the blood flow, you lose the pump, in between moving one muscle group to the next.”
Ansley moves onto rope pressdowns. He reveals that he likes to use the rope because it allows for his hands to turn out for a better contraction of the muscle. Ansley continued with the rope but with a different movement during overhead tricep extensions.
The final exercise of the tricep portion of the workout was weighted dips. Ansley performed sets with a 35, 40, and 50-pound dumbbell.
“Anytime you’re doing any tricep exercise the is extended over the head, you are working on the short head of the tricep. That is the shorthand in here. Anytime you are pressing something down, doing a pressing movement like we did here, you are working on the long head.
“Remember, the tricep has three heads. The short head, long head, and medium head. That is going to make the arm look that much bigger…make sure you have great tri’s.”
Biceps Training
Breon Ansley focused on triceps over the course of this workout and believes that they are sometimes overlooked. To begin his short stint on biceps, Ansley hit alternating dumbbell curls. He began with 45-pound weights and eventually moved up to 50 pounds.
“I was twisting it at the top to get a little bit more of your inner bi here. Now, we’re going to go outer half…We’re going to hit this more with an outer grip. Obviously, we’re going to hit the brachialis here, for the thickness of the bicep, with the hammer curls, which is one of my favorite exercises.”
Ansley continued with EZ-bar curls and hammer curls to finish out the workout. He admitted to favoring hammer curls because he is strongest while performing them. Ansley began with 55-pound dumbbells before making his way up to 75 pounds.
““If you isolate it, keep the shoulders back and down, and keeping this hinge here, kind of like a drag curl…same principles.”
Breon Ansley is focused on the Tampa Pro and gaining momentum heading into December. After falling back a bit in recent competitions, Ansley looks determined to show that he is still one of the best competitors in Classic Physique.
