Breon Ansley Shares High Volume Back Workout Ahead of Tampa Pro
Breon Ansley is working hard to earn his spot at the Olympia.
Days out from the 2022 Tampa Pro two-time Classic Physique Olympia champion Breon Ansley shares his high volume back training routine. With hopes of earning his way onto the Olympia stage, Ansley is working hard and digging deep.
Arnold Classic 2022 Performance
Unfortunately the former reigning Classic Physique Olympia champion couldn’t get back on track as hoped. Breon Ansley was once the most feared man in the Classic Physique division. Now he has been regulated to being third or fourth in the category.
Chris Bumstead and Terrence Ruffin both appear to have firmly cemented their position over Ansley. Ruffin would once again take top honors at the 2022 Arnold Classic while Ansley took third. But despite his performance, Breon Ansley isn’t done with the Classic Physique division quite yet.
Working Back
With just days to go before the 2022 Breon Ansley has shared some of the training he’s been incorporating ahead of the show. From the details it appears that Ansley is leaving nothing to chance.
Hoping to redeem himself at the Tampa Pro, Breon Ansley has doubled down on making gains for the show. Hoping to show he still has what it takes to compete with the best of the best, Ansley is showing supreme dedication in his prep.
“These next two weeks specifically we are not gonna go too heavy, really focus on a lot of volume and a lot of pace and then that third week is gonna be… We’re going to maybe lower the reps and get a little bit more heavier and really grind that out on the heavy side a little bit.”
“There is many phases throughout the prep. So you’ve got to be in tune with what’s going on, you got to really check the balances a lot on a day-to-day basis because things change…”
The full back workout included the following:
Pull-ups
Bent-over dumbbell rows
Lat pull-downs
Bent-over rope pull-downs
Wide grip seated cable rows
Incline back extensions
You can see full details of his training here.

Breon Ansley Shares Massive Leg Workout, Plans To Compete At 2022 Tampa Pro
Breon Ansley shared a workout that he is using ahead of the 2022 Tampa Pro.
Breon Ansley has been one of the top competitors in Classic Physique for years now and continues to compete at a high level. The former Olympia champ recently went thought a massive leg day and shared his plan to compete at the 2022 Tampa Pro.
Ansley won back-to-back Olympia titles in 2017 and 2018. The next year, he was defeated by Chris Bumstead and this is when he began his reign. In October, Ansley finished third at the Olympia, behind both Bumstead and Terrence Ruffin. Classic Physique is continuing to improve and that was on full display during the 2022 Arnold Classic.
In Columbus, Urs Kalecinski and Ramon Rocha Queiroz burst onto the scene even further. Ruffin won his second consecutive Arnold Classic but it was Queiroz who finished as the runner-up while Kalecinski finished third. Ansley was unhappy with his finish during this show and will undoubtedly work to improve his physique even further.
Breon Ansley Leg Day Routine
During a YouTube video Ansley shared, he showed off a mass-building leg workout but also revealed his plan to compete at the Tampa Pro this year. This is something that he did not share until this video was made.
“We are 16 weeks out from the Tampa. I was never really putting the show out there but you heard it here first, here now. You guys are definitely worthy of knowing the information first. My family. So that’s what it’s going to be guys. The Tampa Pro, 16-weeks out, I’m 197 lbs right now so I’m ahead of the game. I’m going to be at 180 at the weight cap in about another 10 weeks. So I want to be right at the weight cap 6 or 7 weeks out.”
Breon Ansley’s preparation continued in the gym with a massive leg workout featuring a “new master plan.” Ansley will focus on high-volume during this workout to remain leaner for a longer period of time.
Leg Extensions: 2 sets of 6, 1 set of 10
Lying Hamstring Curl: 1 set of 6, 1 set of 7, 1 set of 8
Smith Machine Squats: 1 set of 5, 1 set of 9, 1 set of 5
Bodyweight Bulgarian Split Squats: 1 set of 9, 1 set of 11, 1 set of 15
Sissy Squat Machine: 1 set of 5
Barbell Walking Lunges
Standing Calf Machine: 1 set of 5, 1 set of 8
Sitting Calf Machine: 1 set of 5
“This new master plan that we’re putting together this time, that’s going to be the difference. So if I’m leaner over a longer period of time, you guys know usually I’m at 180 like the last two days before weigh ins or the last day before weigh in.”
Breon Ansley has decided to step on stage prior to the Olympia to see the progress he has made. This is a measuring stick to how he will look come December. After the Arnold Classic, it is clear that Ansley decided to shake things up and will feature a new plan.

Breon Ansley Reflects on Arnold Classic Performance
Breon Ansley speaks on his Arnold Classic placing.
Breon Ansley have a reflection on his recent performance at the Arnold Classic. Ansley recently placed fourth at the show leading to questions on what he should do with his future.
Sometimes you gotta know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em as a competitive athlete. It can be a tough pill to swallow knowing that your best years are behind you. That said, a athlete has to consider their options before making such a decision. It appears that former Classic Physique division king Breon Ansley is faced with such a decision.
Breon Ansley is in a bit of a tough spot. His recent placings and performances would suggest that he’s in decline. While he may still have an incredible physique, the former Classic Physique division kingpin now finds himself in unfamiliar territory. Taking fourth place at the Arnold Classic, Ansley now has to return to the drawing board and figure out his next steps.
Hoping to turn things around at this past weekend’s Arnold Classic, Breon Ansley instead found himself barely making it into the top five. A former Arnold Classic champion, Ansley hoped to catch lightning in a bottle and secure victory. Unfortunately for him Terrence Ruffin, Ramon Rocha Queiroz, and Urs Kalecinski were all able to out duel Ansley.
With his placing still fresh on his mind, Breon Ansley took to social media to express his feelings as well as his gratitude.
I wanna thank all my amazing supporters for all the kind words of encouragement and strength; even though we came up short yesterday I had a blast and learned a great deal! The outcome was very tough for me to handle as some might understand but if I can use the moment to teach courage and strength to keep fighting and to use adversity as a power entirely, then it’s definitely a win in all aspects!! Just want everyone to know that is exactly where my mindset is, I will continue on to be totally optimistic about my work ethic and fortitude for improvements!! Love YALL to death and see you for the next one!! Thank you to the entire amazing @arnoldsports Commitee, the hard working judges and all of the Classic Champs I had the pleasure in competing against!!??❤️
It’s clear that Breon Ansley has reached a cross road in his career. At this point Ansley may have to consider a number of things. He continue to compete in the Classic Physique division, he could move to the 212 division, or he can retire.

Breon Ansley Shares Back Workout To Build Thicker Lats Ahead Of 2022 Arnold Classic
Breon Ansley has targeted his lats as a potential area of improvement heading into the season.
Breon Ansley is looking to begin the 2022 season with a bang. He has been working in the offseason to improve some parts of his physique and there has been a huge focus on his back. Ansley recently shared a back workout that focuses on stretching his lats to add thickness. This is his goal as he prepares to take the stage at the 2022 Arnold Classic.
Ansley has been sharing many workouts in recent weeks. He began an entire series on his prep for the Arnold Classic on his YouTube page. Last week, Ansley released the fourth episode of this series and it focused on building up his lats.
Breon Ansley is a two-time Classic Physique Olympia champion. He is still one of the top-tier competitors in the division today. Ansley finished third at the 2021 Olympia behind Chris Bumstead and Terrence Ruffin. Bumstead completed his three-peat in October and is looking to make it four in a row in December. Ruffin will defend his Arnold Classic title after winning the event in September.
Ansley will make sure to show up in his best shape. He began this session by going through a mobility warm-up that emphasizes scapular control and stretching his lats. This sets the tone for a big workout.
The first exercise of the day is a superset. Ansley pairs bent-over rows with a variation of a rack pull. During this set, Ansley stresses the importance of keeping his core engaged.
“Don’t loosen your core. It’s going to loosen your back — that’s how you’re going to pull your back. Keep core tight.”
Breon Ansley completes single-arm seated rows. He adds a new element to the exercise by reaching as far as he can while the weight is lowered. This is done to continue that stretch in his lats that provides the extra boost in size. Ansley then moves onto a triple set. This features seated rows, low cable rows, and paused face pulls. The final exercise of the workout is underhanded seated rows.
After the workout, Ansley was satisfied with the work he put in. He will certainly be one of the top names at the Arnold Classic and has a chance to take home the prize in Classic Physique. It will be another stacked lineup but that is what makes for an exciting and entertaining show.

Breon Ansley Speaks On Oxygen Gym: ‘My Personal Experience Was Incredible’
Breon Ansley had positive things to say about his experience at Oxygen Gym in Kuwait.
It seems as though opinions on Oxygen Gym in Kuwait will vary depending on which athlete you ask. The gym has received criticism from some who have trained there because of its intense nature. This is an establishment that is known for rushing the limits. This training style is not right for everyone but it is hard to argue with some of the results.
Oxygen Gym, which is owned by Bader Budai, has produced some elite competitors in the sport of bodybuilding. Recently, two-time Olympia Classic Physique champion Breon Ansley sang the praises of the gym. In a recent interview, Ansley described his experiences, which he described as “positive.”
“I would say my experience, my personal experience was incredible. I had the utmost support from Bader. I had Chris out there. You know, all of the guys. You know that trained in the gym. All of the competitors and just regular gym-goers, they were all great and all supportive. Yeah, everything was great. Everything was absolutely wonderful.”
There have been plenty of contrary statements made about the gym. Regan Grimes recently spoke about his experiences in Kuwait. He explained how he gained 40 pounds in a short amount of time and the trainers were not thrilled about him going home. Grimes admitted that the style of training works but he was not for him. Also, reigning two-time Olympia champion Big Ramy left the gym back in 2018 after exercise regiments and increased supplements kept getting pushed harder and harder.
On the other end is Brandon Curry. The former Olympia champ and two-time runner-up still trains at Oxygen Gym. Breon Ansley explained how he used to room with Curry in Kuwait and how the presence of other bodybuilders adds to the overall energy.
“Yeah and the energy with Rolly in there and Ramy at the time, Ahmad was in there training. Ahmad Axomoni, yeah and Brandon, and shit, I was roommates with Brandon. We stayed together so that was really cool. So yeah nothing but great things for me to say about the experience there in Kuwait at the Oxygen Gym. My ears haven’t been on the streets to what’s going on, so I don’t know what happened.”
Breon Ansley continues to train hard at age 42. He continues to be one of the top competitors in Classic Physique. Ansley is a two-time champion and has three consecutive top-three finishes, including back-to-back bronze medals.
The 2021 Olympia saw many young competitors stop up and finish in the top five. Ansley does not feel like his age is a disadvantage. In fact, quit the opposite.
““Oh, I feel it’s an advantage. Because it’s just as well, we were talking about, the maturity. The quality of the muscle, you know. I feel now that, even with, even with certain little nagging stuff I have, when I am close to 100% my strength, my strength stride is the highest that it’s ever been.”
The overall confidence and mindset of Breon Ansley is a key factor in remaining near the top. Of course, this does along with an elite physique. Despite some recent heat that Oxygen Gym has been under, Ansley remains an advocate of the gym.

Breon Ansley Strips Down And Shows Sneak Peek Of Physique At Olympia Press Conference
Former Classic Physique champion Breon Ansley did not wait until Saturday to show off his physique.
Breon Ansley is one of the best Classic Physique competitors in the sport. He is a two-time Olympia champion and is looking to get his title back from reigning champion Chris Bumstead. Ansley started off the Olympia press conference with some fire, confidence, and even a sneak peek.
Ansley and Terrence Ruffin started out the press conference before being joined by Bumstead on stage. There was a confidence from Ansley that believes he can get his title back at this year’s competition. He even chose to show off his physique earlier than expected.
Breon Ansley stated that no one had to wait until the weekend to show any progress made from last year’s competition. He did so by removing his shirt and posing down a bit early.
Ansley went through a stretch where he was difficult to defeat. He took home back-to-back titles in Classic Physique at the Olympia in 2017 and 2018. Ansley also won the Arnold Classic is 2018. At 41 years old, Ansley is still competing at a high level and wants to show that he is not regressing.
Bumstead has won back-to-back competitions and it began in 2019. Ansley finished second at this competition and fell to third in 2020. Ruffin was able to jump Ansley in last year’s competition for a second-place finish. Ansley believes that he was not at his best and this is why he fell to third.
Breon Ansley was up on stage posing on his own as Bumstead and Ruffin did not participate. Bumstead believes that the other competitors are fighting for second place and he will make it three in a row. He has been active on social media showing off his recent physique. As for Ruffin, he is coming off an Arnold Classic win two weeks ago and is in the best shape of his career.
The Classic Physique competition is one that will be exciting on Saturday. With the athletes at the top, it should be as good as it gets.

Breon Ansley clarifies his past comments and about Chris Bumstead and his thoughts on their rivalry
Breon Ansley is and always has been a respectful and confident pro bodybuilder in the Classic Physique division. So it came as a shock to some when he seemingly agreed with Bradley Martyn – who claimed that Chris Bumstead was lacking in certain areas of his physique despite winning the Olympia 2019.
The video clip went viral and made headlines across many bodybuilding media outlets including Generation Iron. After this – it seemed that Breon Ansley was unhappy on how he was presented in the news stories, making comments on social media that the headlines were misleading.

Danny Hester: Chris Bumstead Won Olympia Due To Improvements But Not Perfection
Danny Hester believes that Chris Bumstead’s physique was very close to Breon Ansley – but it was his massive improvements that earned him the win.
Chris Bumstead vs Breon Ansley was one of the most hyped up battles of the Classic Physique Olympia 2020. Ultimately, Chris Bumstead solidified his status as champion with a second win. Surprisingly, Breon Ansley fell down to third place. But Danny Hester believes that Bumstead and Ansley’s physiques were actually very close in quality. What made the difference was Bumstead’s massive improvements since last year.
The same can be said of Terrence Ruffin, who slipped up into second ahead of Breon Ansley. These three competitors were neck and neck. It’s Danny Hester’s belief that comparisons to previous years and how much they each improved decided the ultimate placings. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Danny Hester explains how judges consistently reward improvements – and that’s the main reason Chris Bumstead won Olympia 2020.
Danny Hester wants to make one thing clear during our latest interview segment. When a bodybuilder competes on stage, they are being not only compared to the other competitors but also their past self. Pro bodybuilding and judges cannot help but be somewhat subjective. Despite scores and a set of guidelines to follow – judging a physique will always be skewed by subjective opinion.
That’s why there are multiple judges on the panel instead of just one. To help bring in a consensus among multiple perspectives. Danny Hester also believes that comparisons to previous competitions also helps keep the judges guided. That it’s an unwritten guiding principle with scoring. If a bodybuilder shows incredible improvement from one competition to the next – the judges take notice. That affects the overall score and placing.

Danny Hester doesn’t give his personal opinion on who had the best physique at the Classic Physique Olympia 2020. But he does suggest that the physique quality was very close between Chris Bumstead and Breon Ansley.
“Now even with the improvements, was it enough for him [Chris Bumstead] to beat Breon? That’s a whole different story,” Danny Hester states in our interview. While not confirmed -this seems to imply that Hester doesn’t view Bumstead’s physique as breakaway superior from Ansley.
He does understand, and truly believes, that Chris Bumstead won purely on his vast improvements. Hester himself gives Bumstead credit. He admits that the amount of improvements in Bumstead’s physique from the Olympia 2019 to 2020 was incredible. It’s hard for any pro bodybuilder to get that kind of improvement in one year. Bumstead pulled it off. The judges noticed. That gave Bumstead the edge.
Danny Hester relates this to his experience competing. He recalls a competition he competed in just three weeks before winning the Classic Olympia. He placed third due to feeling slightly sick on the night of the show. He was frustrated. So he worked extra hard in the final three weeks leading up to Olympia.
Ultimately, he won the Classic Physique Olympia. He thinks this is partially due to the extra effort he put in after feeling defeated. But he also thinks it’s because some of the same judges were at the earlier show and also judging at Olympia. They saw his improvements. They directly noticed how he changed. That helped him get an edge and win that year.
So what does that mean for Chris Bumstead going into 2021? There are always improvements to be made – but can he surprise with such vast improvements like the year before? And if he can’t will it be enough for him to stay on top? Only time will tell. Perhaps Breon Ansley will be the one to bring in improvements and get the edge.
You can watch Danny Hester go into more detail about his thoughts of the Classic Physique Olympia results by watching our latest GI Exclusive above!
