Fitness Star Jesse James West Trained Calves For 30 Days To See How Much They Would Grow
Jesse James West was on a mission to grow his calves and did it training them everyday for one month.
You’ve heard it a million times in the gym — “do not skip leg day.” Fitness star Jesse James West decided to take it to the next level and not skip calf day for an entire month. On a mission to see if he could get them to grow, West trained calves everyday for 30 days while tracking his progress.
West measured his calves at the beginning of this 30-day period and after his final workout. In the end, the stats show that he gained a quarter of an inch to the size of his calves from training for 30 days in a row.
“I would say the worst thing about this challenge is that for the next 30 days I have to wear shorts and reveal my tiny calves to everyone,” West says.
How did Jesse James West train?
It does not seem easy to train the same body part for 30 days in a row. In the beginning, West kept the volume low so he did not become sore right away. This was going to come over the course of the month but it is something that West wanted to avoid right way.
As the month went on, the thought of shin splints reared its ugly head thanks to the combination of training and cardio.
“My calves are so sore and the combination of calves every day and then cardio every day is adding up, so I’m hoping we don’t have any issues, we don’t get any shin splints.”
[embedded content]
Jesse James West saw some visible progress made in his calves and this was the result he was looking for. The experiment worked as he was able to add some size. The workouts that he put himself through were thorough and how he began each day in the gym
Throughout the video, West was seen performing different various of calf raises. He used the Smith machine, leg press machine, and others to perform his sets.
“The biggest thing you need to focus on when training calves is doing a full range of motion. If you’re not training full range of motion, you’re not getting the full benefit out of everything.”
In the end, the fitness star called for viewers to send requests on another body part that he should train for 30 days straight. This is an unorthodox strategy as lifters try not to over-train any part of the body. West is doing experiments on himself and finding out how a month of training and build size and strength.

Rauno Heinla Sets Silver Dollar Deadlift World Record With 1,278.7-Pound Lift
Rauno Heinla approached 1,300 pounds during his recent feat of strength.
It has not been the easiest road for Rauno Heinla to this point of the 2022 calendar year. He has dealt with different setbacks that have hindered his progress. Heinla recently put all of that behind him as he set a new silver dollar deadlift world record with a 580kg (1,278.7lb) feat of strength.
Heinla battled stomach issues the kept him out of the World’s Strongest Man competition. It was expected that his return wold take awhile but Heinla was able to put all of that behind him and get on stage during the 2022 Silver Dollar Deadlift Estonian Championship. This competition took place on Saturday in Viljandi. Heinla impressed over the course of the competition including setting a new world record. This mark was previously held by Ben Thompson, which was set during the 2022 WDC Silver Dollar Deadlift World Championships.
The silver dollar deadlift gets its name because the barbell has two boxes on the side full of plates. In the past, these boxes were filled with actual silver dollars but it would take too many in today’s sport. Adding plates on each side makes more sense. Heinla stepped up to the weight with a lifting belt, wrist wraps, and deadlift suit.
Rauno Heinla is back on stage and will continue to reach new heights. Since accomplishing this silver dollar lift, conversations have started about Heinla reaching the deadlift world record. This is a goal that he has been working toward during training.
Heinla has competed in 45 competitions during his powerlifting career. He has appeared in just one World’s Strongest Man competition. He missed this year’s show but is planning to appear at the 2022 Giants Live World Open & World Deadlift Championships. This could be the site of Heinla attempting to reach the deadlift world record.
Heinla is considered a threat to the deadlift throne because this is where his greatest strength lies. He has reached the 1,000-pound mark in a standard deadlift and this number will continue to rise.
Rauno Heinla was able to cross off one lift off the top of his lift. Now that the silver dollar lift is in the rearview mirror, he can focus on the overall deadlift world record — potentially at his next show.

Calum Von Moger Displays Accident Wounds From Hospital Bed In Update
Calum Von Moger showcases some of his wounds received after jumping from a second story window and being hospitalized.
After a somewhat long period of silence, Calum Von Moger shared a video of his wounds received after jumping from a second story window. The video was posted on his official Instagram and appear to be taken from his hospital bed. This post, along with another post made on Instagram earlier today, mark his first direct posts online since April 29th. Moger has been the subject of much media attention after multiple arrests in Australia that eventually led up to his shocking accident.
On May 6th, it was reported that Calum Von Moger jumped through a second story window while under the influence of methamphetamine. He received many injuries, including lacerations from the glass and spinal damage from the fall. He was hospitalized, received spinal surgery, and was in a coma for many days.
The news was a tragic and shocking turn of events after multiple troubling signs leading up to the May 6th incident. Local reports in Australia noted two separate arrests involving road rage incidents – one of which included Moger brandishing a machete. Since the accident, Moger has been reported to be in stable condition and awake. Today marks Moger’s first direct posts on Instagram since the accident.
You can watch the video post below:
The video, posted on Instagram, showcases Calum Von Moger filming his own arms. His arms have multiple laceration wounds stitched up and some bandaged. Moger appears to still be in the hospital bed during the time of the recording.
Three hours earlier, Calum Von Moger also made a post featuring a quote that appears to be from the Bible:
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and hope.’”
Calum Von Moger’s Accident & Mental Health In Bodybuilding
Calum Von Moger is a bodybuilder that became the pinnacle example of a new era of bodybuilding. His fame did not come from competitions but from social media. A video showcasing his physique and his training methods went viral – leading to his eventual fame and continued social media popularity. He was known as Arnold 2.0 due to his classic physique that matched the look of Arnold Schwarzenegger during his prime.
Moger took this popularity and ran with it – revealing not only a continued impressive physique but also a lavish and adventurous lifestyle. He was one part loved for his classic looking physique, and one part loved for his influencer style adventures and interaction with fans.
So it became shocking to the bodybuilding community when his social channels went silent. Calum Von Moger essentially disappeared in 2022. He returned to Australia, stopped competing in bodybuilding shows, and nearly stopped posting online altogether.
Following this silence, local reports came out of Australia of Moger getting into violent road rage incidents – being arrested twice as noted earlier in this article. This led to an online onslaught of influencer and blog coverage trying to “diagnose” his mental state.
Calum Von Moger eventually made a post on Instagram promising that he would work on his flaws and try to get better. Sadly, shortly after his accident involving jumping through a second story window occurred. This accident also confirmed earlier rumors of his use of methamphetamine.
In the wider mainstream conversation beyond bodybuilding, there has been much said about the dangers of social media and how it influences mental health. While it is clear that Calum Von Moger has many personal issues that we cannot begin to guess about – his struggles also were clearly seen on social media.
While we are not willing to speculate on what caused Moger’s recent and tragic accident. The entire situation has sparked discussions about mental health in bodybuilding and in relation to social media. Did the added pressure of social media attention during a time of struggle contribute to his declining mental health during this period of time? That’s up for debate – and one the bodybuilding community has been discussing at length recently.
Calum Von Moger’s Recovery
In either case, it appears that Calum Von Moger is on the mend. We had already received word that he had awoken from his coma – and these posts seem to show that he is ready to start engaging with the bodybuilding community online again. The video, while painful to watch, also shows that his wounds are healing. His spinal injury did no permanently disable him from walking. So for now it seems that Moger will be able to literally walk out of his accident.
Generation Iron wishes a speedy recovery for Calum Von Moger – and will provide more updates as they become available. It’s not clear what the future holds for Moger in direct terms regarding his bodybuilding career. That may become more clear as time passes during his recovery down the road.

Nick Walker On Bodybuilding And PEDs: ‘I Don’t Think There Is Truly Anyway To Make It Better’
Nick Walker recently discussed the dangers in bodybuilding regarding PEDs.
Nick Walker has climbed to the top of bodybuilding because of his incredible size and conditioned physique. The issues of PEDs is bodybuilding is a hot topic in recent months and something that Walker knows about. He recently opened up a bit on the subject and if anything can be done.
Walker recently sat down with Greg Doucette for an interview. Doucette has been heavily active on social media, specifically his YouTube page, getting different inputs from bodybuilders on different topics around the sport. Here, the two discussed what might be done for bodybuilding to become safer for all involved.
Nick Walker on PEDs: “We’re Playing With Fire”
Nick Walker decided at the beginning of the year that he would focus his offseason prep on the Olympia. He decided not to defend his Arnold Classic or New York Pro titles, which Walker won in 2021. He finished fifth at the Olympia in October and is determined to improve his standing.
In a recent video with Doucette, Walker weighed in on the topic of PEDs.
“I feel like anything that could help at this point but at the end of the day, bodybuilding is bodybuilding. People come to see the freaks. People come to see us stand on stage and be as freaky as we can. Is it dangerous? Yes. Is there ways to make it safer? I’m sure, but at the end of the day, we’re playing with fire.”
Walker continued to discuss how athletes abuse different substances in the offseason particularly. This can go from different PEDs to food. This is how competitors are able to gain weight in the offseason and hang onto it for when it is time to cut.
[embedded content]
“Getting to a certain weight and then holding that weight, which is extremely unhealthy. Then, what? They come off a little while and then they got to do prep. We all know, everyone does probably a little more in prep because of how shredded you have to get.”
What Can Be Done?
In the opinion of Nick Walker, there is not much that can be done to make bodybuilding safer but he did like some ideas that have been thrown out.
“I don’t think there is truly anyway to make it better but honestly, I did like Fouad’s weight cap suggestion. Just because it would help keep everyone in the offseason in check without gaining too much weight.”
Shawn Rhoden and George Peterson suddenly passed away at the end of 2021. Cedric McMillan is the latest to pass away from heart complications. This is when different athletes began taking their health a bit more serious. This does not just include bodybuilders. Powerlifter Larry Wheels recently made it a point to get his heart checked out.
According to Walker, this is what athletes need to be doing in order to get ahead of anything.
“The only thing we can really do is individually, get our daily blood work checked, our daily EKGs, Echos, Calcium Scores, however often you feel you need. That’s really it. I mean, in my opinion, it all comes down to you.”

Branch Warren rose near the top of bodybuilding during the 2010s because of his physique but also commitment to the sport. That is something that has not changed since he retired from competition. Warren recently showed off another physique update where he is looking as shredded as ever.
Warren was able to qualify for the Olympia many times over the course of his career but did not capture a title. In 2009, Warren came as close as possible entering the Olympia in his best shape. He finished at the runner-up to Jay Cutler that year and the loss was not east to deal with. He is a two-time champion at the Arnold Classic (2011, 2012).
In 2015, Warren decided to retire from bodybuilding but this did not mean that he was going to stop training — quite the opposite. He is still extremely active in the gym and makes sure to keep his physique in top shape.
Branch Warren Physique Update
Branch Warren was a featured character in the original Generation Iron film where a wider platform was provided to showcase his training and lifestyle in the sport of bodybuilding. Now, it is clear that he has maintained such a lifestyle off the stage at 47 years old.
“Still grinding!! This is throwing it back to last week in San Diego”
Branch Warren showed off his lower half in this specific physique update. Because of his dedication to bodybuilding to this day, there was some rumblings of a potential comeback in 2021. Warren made it clear that he will not officially return to the stage but he will train like he is.
The Masters Olympia is preparing to return in 2023. This has opened the door for many competitors to come back and perform in a different way. This is a show that was present from 1994-2003, with Dexter Jackson as the last champion of the show. It will be interesting to see if Warren considers this an option when the time comes.
Branch Warren has been busy in retirement with different projects, including his beef jerky company Wicked Cutz Jerky. Regardless of his future plans, it is clear that Warren has kept himself in championship shape.

He was dealing with an injury during the beginning of the year but has since returned to competition. During the 2021 Olympia, Shaaban placed 10th and was unhappy with his performance. After his performance in San Diego, it is fair to say that Shaaban is the favorite to win in Toronto. If he shows up with the same conditioning, he will be difficult to beat.
Joe Seeman
Seeman is the lone competitor from Canada to compete on Sunday. He finished third in this show last year and has a chance to make another impact in 2022. Seeman added two sixth-place finishes at the Legion Sports Fest and Arnold Classic UK. When looking at this roster, Seeman has a chance to make some noise and finish near the top.
Dorian Haywood
Haywood remains active on stage. He competed in five shows last year and was present during the Indy Pro this year, where he finished sixth. He was fourth in both the Indy Pro and New York Pro in 2021. The field in Toronto will not be as deep which means Haywood could have his sights set on a strong showing.

He also finished fifth at this show last year. Muzi was on stage in California last week and finished fourth. Derek Lunsford Breaks Down A Full Day Of Eating During Offseason
Derek Lunsford recently took viewers through his six meals over the course of a day.
Derek Lunsford stole the show during the 2022 Pittsburgh Pro. The reigning 212 Olympia champion made an appearance as a guest poser and displayed incredible size and conditioning. This immediately sparked the question on whether or not he will make the jump to Men’s Open. As of now, he remains in 212 and is preparing to defend his title.
Lunsford took to YouTube to share a full day of eating during his offseason. He was able to reach the pinnacle of 212 last year after competing for many years. Lunsford made his Olympia debut in 2017 before finishing second to Flex Lewis in 2018. Now, he will look to make it two in a row in December.
Lunsford was able to take advantage of his posing appearance in Pittsburgh. After a great showing, Lunsford sparked conversation and looked massive in his recent YouTube video as well. Checkout the full day of eating from the reining 212 champion below.

Meal 1
Derek Lunsford made it clear that his goal is to hit 50 grams or protein and 75 grams of carbs in his meals. For the first meal of the day, Lunsford focused on egg whites and steak with some potatoes. This was followed by his supplements. Lunsford mixed in Evolog and Evovite following his meal to prevent nausea. He likes to take these multiple times per day, along with a probiotic.
200 grams egg whites
Mushrooms
Steak
Potatoes
Meal 2
With his second meal, Lunsford mixed some shredded chicken and rice together. This was along with buffalo sauce and light ranch. He explained that during prep he would not usually add sauces but this is still the offseason.
8 ounces shredded chicken
8 ounces white rice
“To me, if it tastes good, I want to eat more of it. So, if I’m dieting, and I’m hungry, even after I eat a meal, then I want to make it taste not bland but not as good as it could be, so that way I’m not craving it every day.”
Meal 3
This is the final leg of the cycle that Lunsford likes to follow — two solid food meals and a shake. In this particular shake, Lunsford mixed chocolate Evogen and cream of rice. He added some almond milk but would typically use water. This is usually a big post-workout shake for Lunsford.

Cream of rice
Meal 4
After a nap, Derek Lunsford continued with more solid food. This time, it was back to chicken and white rice. Lunsford continues on the trend of 50 grams of protein and 60 grams of carbs. During this part of the video, the 212 champ admits that he does indulge in a cheat meal every now and then.
8 ounces ground chicken
8-9 ounces white rice
“Today, I’m not training, I’m resting. So, I’ll eat five meals for sure and late tonight I’ll eat a sixth meal. I do have cheat meals sometimes, like twice a week I’m having cheat meals. Last night, we had sushi, typically, I’ll have either Sushi or burgers or Persian food, something like that.”
Meal 5
Instead of chicken, meal five for Lunsford consists of steak and white rice. The switch to steak is important by Lunsford. He believes that red meat should be consumed at least once a day for many reasons.
8 ounces steak
8 ounces white rice
“Steak and rice, it’s a staple. I think you need to eat at least one red meat meal a day in the off-season, maybe two. I wouldn’t eat too too much but one to two meals a day is good. You’ll probably notice your strength goes up, volume will increase.”
Meal 6
Finally, Derek Lunsford finishes his day with another shake. This one consists of almond milk and two scoops of Evogen Isoject.

Charles Glass Explains Must-Try Superset Performing Many Actions On One Machine
Charles Glass shared a way to use one machine for multiple purposes during a superset.
Charles Glass knows a thing or two about building size and strength in the gym. As a bodybuilder, he developed a shredded physique with great size. Now, he is sharing his knowledge as a coach for others to try. Recently, Glass shared a superset to try during shoulder that can be done on one machine.
Glass is one of the best coaches in the sport because of his incredible attention to detail. During his career, Glass has put many workouts together and figured out which movements make muscles grow effectively. This time, he is doing so by cutting time and doing multiple things at once.
Charles Glass’ Shoulder Superset
Charles Glass took to YouTube to share this video. The super set consists of the plate-loaded deltoid and shoulder press machine. Glass positioned the arms underneath and then went across the body. He believes that turning the shoulders inward helps during the movement.
[embedded content]
“That shoulder should come toward me a little bit. Glass said. “You turn your body in as you move across. A little higher than that but keep pressing the arms back so they don’t go forward. There you go, now you’re on that delt. Now take a breather and do all three again.”
Glass continues to explain how machines can be used in different ways. this particular video focused on shoulders and the shoulder press machine.
“I was just trying to show how you can take one machine and do multiple things on it, that’s all. So, we did all three. Actually, we could have done four because she could have done rear delts by facing in and pushing up.”
Charles Glass discusses why he begins with mid delts as well. This is because he believes it is the best place to get warm first and have blood pumped. This will benefit the lifter over the course of the workout.
“I do mid because I’m trying to warm me up a little bit. Trying to get the blood in that area. Facing forward, you’re getting a whole lot of blood in that whole delt area. Now, we want to isolate it a little bit, so we go across the body, the number front delt. You’re not hitting the mid.”
