Iain Valliere: Men’s Open Bodybuilding Is About To Explode In Popularity After A Lull
[embedded content]
Two years ago, Iain Valliere thought the future of Men’s Open bodybuilding was looking grim… now he thinks it’s about to explode into new levels of popularity.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – bodybuilding has been going through a bit of a transition period over the last five or six years. The old guard of champions have slowly stepped down to new younger athletes – but the younger athletes have yet to truly enter their final form. This explains criticism of conditioning issues and questions of whether or not Classic Physique could take over as the number one division. Iain Valliere was worried as well just a few years ago – but now he believes we are on the verge of a new rise in popularity. In our latest GI Exclusive, Iain Valliere explains why Men’s Open has had a lull… and why he thinks it’s about to explode to new heights.
Iain Valliere is a Men’s Open bodybuilder who has been getting a lot of hype and attention in 2021. He’s not alone. He’s one of many younger athletes finally coming into their own and catching attention at major shows. Hunter Labrada, Regan Grimes, Sergio Oliva, and Nick Walker have all been turning heads. The best part? They aren’t even at the prime of their careers yet.
During our conversation, we asked Iain Valliere what his outlook for the Men’s Open division was in the next decade. He answered that if we had asked him two years ago, he would be pretty pessimistic. However now in 2021, Valliere is extremely optimistic and confident that the division is about to see a massive rise in attention.
Iain Valliere rewinds us back just a few years. Classic Physique was newly introduced during a controversial moment in the sport. Many fans and even experts were complaining about Men’s Open physiques. They felt the physiques were too soft and too bulky and that aesthetics were falling to the wayside. At the same time, Classic Physiques focus on aesthetics over mass monster size really caught on. It’s now one of the most exciting divisions in the sport. Many wondered if it could overtake Men’s Open as the most popular division – or at the very least change the way Men’s Open physiques looked.
During this time, we also had constantly shifting Olympia champions. First a final win from a waning Phil Heath, then Shawn Rhoden’s more aesthetic physique, then Brandon Curry – who received some criticism for the state of his physique at the time. Iain Valliere thought things were looking grim. Where was the excitement for the original division that made bodybuilding great?
But then suddenly everything changed. The younger bodybuilders were finally making headroom on the stage. They built more of a fanbase and are the first generation to really embrace and be born with the social media era. Valliere believes that this engagement with social media alongside physiques that are finally coming into better form are bringing Men’s Open bodybuilding back to a boil.
“I think right now when you look at how many young guys there are that have been really good about putting content out and giving access to the lives of pro bodybuilders and keeping that tradition alive,” Iain Valliere stated in our interview. He continued:
“…And I think there are so many promising young athletes… guys like me and Nick. Hunter, Akeem, Nathan, James Hollingshead. Guys that are in their early 30s that are so promising that are also so good at talking to their fans and so good at putting good information out there. I think these guys are gonna be the leaders on the forefront of keeping that division growing. And I think really over the next five, six, seven years – I think it’s going to explode again.”
In 2013, the film Generation Iron gave an inside look into many of the greatest bodybuilders competing at the time. As of today, many of those athletes are now retired or slowly stepping aside. On top of that, the insight into pro bodybuilders’ lives has blown wide open due to social media. It was a turbulent time of change but it seems that the change is finally making headway to a new pinnacle era of the sport. Perhaps Valliere is right. In the next five or six years we very well may have another Golden Era of bodybuilding.

Iain Valliere: The Struggle Of Mass Monster Eating & Vital Tips For Hardgainers
[embedded content]
Iain Valliere discusses the often ignored struggle of eating mass amounts of food to reach pro bodybuilding size… and shares tips to improve your appetite.
Iain Valliere is a pro bodybuilder on the rise in Men’s Open. In 2021, he received much hype for his physique winning multiple shows throughout the year. He also placed 7th at the Olympia 2021. This is nothing to slouch at. That’s why we turned to him for advice that he could share with up and coming bodybuilders. During our discussion, the topic of diet, nutrition, and the challenge of eating high amounts of calories became a focus. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Iain Valliere shares his personal struggles with eating like a mass monster and shares his tips for how to improve appetite.
Men’s Open bodybuilders are massive. There’s no getting around that. For fans of the sport, we might all be used to the mass monster size. But to the average person, these athletes look like freaks. That’s part of the appeal. But the reality is, even if it’s largely muscle, Men’s Open bodybuilders weight between 240-300 pounds on average. That’s a lot of weight. Training hardcore in the gym alone doesn’t build that kind of size. It takes a lot of food to build up that kind of weight as well. It’s a situation that Iain Valliere knows very well.
It’s no secret that most pro athletes consume far more calories than the average person. Bodybuilders fall on the most extreme side of this. In order to maintain 250 pounds of muscle, a bodybuilder needs to eat a lot. This is not natural for most people – even for most bodybuilders dedicated to the sport and lifestyle. In fact, Mr. Olympia champion Jay Cutler himself described a bodybuilder diet as force feeding.
During our conversation with Iain Valliere, we talked about bodybuilding diets and the struggle of eating mass amounts of food. Valliere revealed that he is naturally a hardgainer. When he graduated high school he only weighed 106 pounds. Putting on massive bodybuilding weight was always a challenge for him. Eating large amounts of food every day was basically a chore.
So what can a hardgainer do when they simply have no appetite to eat more food? What happens when the prospect of eating one more bite of anything disgusts them? We asked this question to Iain Valliere – and he had some vital tips to share.
First there’s the unfortunate truth, it simply takes time for you to physically and psychologically adapt to eating mass amounts of food. Iain Valliere admits he had more struggles when he first started. But consistency and constant effort into the sport simply rewires your mentality over time. It’s not going to make the early efforts any easier – but it does get better.
Thankfully, Iain Valliere also has some truly actionable tips to help increase your appetite. Many bodybuilders will avoid cardio during bulking season. This is due to the fear of cardio cutting away at muscle on top of the fat. Valliere has learned that cardio is actually necessary for bodybuilders – even during the off season. It doesn’t have to be hardcore cardio – but some aerobic action each day will increase your appetite. Valliere suggests talking a jog or walk after every meal. It will not burn too many calories – but help prevent bloating and fullness in the long run.

Iain Valliere: There Are Only Two Ways To Beat Big Ramy At Mr. Olympia 2021
[embedded content]
Iain Valliere breaks down the two approaches to beating Big Ramy ahead of the Mr. Olympia 2021.
We are less than one week away from the biggest bodybuilding event of the year – Mr. Olympia 2021. This will be Big Ramy’s first chance to defend his champion status. Will he prove his win to be more than just a fluke? Or will he be another athlete to join the one and done list of single Olympia champions? Only time will tell – but in the meantime we spoke with qualified Olympia competition Iain Valliere on whether or not Ramy can be defeated. He thinks it’s a tough mountain to climb – but there is a slim margin to beat Ramy. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Iain Valliere details the only two ways that Big Ramy can be defeated at the Mr. Olympia 2021.
In 2020, Big Ramy showcased the greatest physique of his career. For the first time ever, his conditioning matched his enormous size. This made him a powerhouse and nearly unstoppable. Returning champion Brandon Curry could not hold up – nor could seven time former Olympia champion Phil Heath. Ramy was fully realized. It earned him a spot on the short list of Olympia champions.
It’s been a near year since that epic victory. We are just under a week before the Mr. Olympia 2021. This is our first time to see Big Ramy on stage competing again. Traditionally, Big Ramy’s biggest weakness has been the consistency of his conditioning. One year he will be close to on point. The next he would be completely off point. Just because Ramy won a Mr. Olympia title doesn’t mean the consistency problem will be fixed.
That being said, Big Ramy’s impressive physique in 2020 might also signal he has learned what is needed to keep his conditioning consistent. We’ll soon find out this weekend. During our conversation with fellow Olympia competitor Iain Valliere – we asked his take on Big Ramy’s physique and how he could be potentially toppled from his throne. The way Valliere sees it, there are only two viable tactics for defeating Big Ramy.
The first is to beat him in size. If a competitor can show up with insane size and conditioning to at the very least match Big Ramy – then he can lose the title. The second tactic is to look at Ramy’s weakness and exploit them. This means that a bodybuilder would focus less on size and more on absolute superior conditioning and aesthetics. Iain Valliere thinks that no competitor is currently poised to succeed with the first tactic. This leaves only conditioning and aesthetics as the superior route to defeat Ramy.
“I think there’s two ways to beat Ramy,” Iain Valliere stated in our interview. He continued:
“It’s going to come down to either a guy with really really crazy shape like a Brandon or a Nathan but compiled with really good conditioning. Or it’s going to come down to someone bigger with better conditioning. I don’t see anyone being bigger than Ramy so I think the way to beat Ramy is with detail and shape. I think trying to be bigger than the biggest guy is insanity.”
Looking back at the 2020 Mr. Olympia, Iain Valliere saw Brandon Curry as the closest competitor to take down Big Ramy.
“I think someone like Brandon last year could have closed that gap if his conditioning was a little better. Because he has the shape, he has the symmetry, he has that silhouette of, like, a very very dominant bodybuilder with the bubbliness and flow and tiny waist. Where he was just a little subpar was his conditioning in comparison [to Big Ramy]”
Iain Valliere goes on to state that Brandon Curry is still a superb athlete and is only critiquing his physique in comparison to Big Ramy. In fact, Iain Vailliere even takes himself out of the equation – stating that he is not in the right place to beat someone like Ramy at this year’s competition.
So it seems, according to Iain Valliere, the Mr. Olympia 2021 title will teeter on two factors. How on point Big Ramy is with his conditioning and how on point a rival competitor can raise the bar to exploit Ramy’s weaknesses. It all hangs on the delicate blade of a knife.

INTERVIEW: How Iain Valliere Improved His Physique Just Six Weeks Between Shows For The Arnold Classic 2021
[embedded content]
Iain Valliere only had six weeks between the Texas Pro and the Arnold Classic – here’s how he prepped to improve his physique.
Last week, we talked to Iain Valliere about his risky strategy for the 2021 bodybuilding season. Instead of putting all of his eggs in one basket (the Arnold Classic 2021), he competed in many shows throughout the year. Not only that – but he gave himself very little time between competitions. After his latest win at the Texas Pro, he only had six weeks before the Arnold Classic. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Iain Valliere details exactly how he prepped in just six weeks for the Arnold Classic to improve even further from his impressive showcase at the Texas Pro.
Prepping for a bodybuilding competition is a length and challenging endeavor. It’s usually the reason why a bodybuilder will only compete in a small number of shows per year. They don’t want to run the risk of burn out or ill timing for bigger shows that matter. It’s part of the reason why the Olympia champion only competes at the Olympia the following year. With no need to qualify – they focus solely on being perfect for the biggest event in the sport.
Iain Valliere chose to handle things differently this year. He competed in multiple shows in the tail end of the 2021 season. In fact, he only gave himself six months between the Texas Pro (which he won) and the Arnold Classic. Not only that – but following the Arnold Classic, he only has two weeks before he competes again in the Mr. Olympia.
Some find this too risky – but Iain Valliere finds that he improves with each passing competition. He prefers the short gaps in between to keep him eternally on point. So now with only a few days until this weekend’s Arnold Classic – we’ll see just how on point his physique really is.
Of course, the Arnold Classic is a totally different beast from the Texas Pro. He’ll need to show improvements in order to stay in line with the biggest names in the sport. That’s why we asked Valliere exactly how he strategized to improve in such a short amount of time.
Iain Valliere was well aware of his tight turnaround – so improvements aren’t expected to be massive in terms of increased size. But he did challenge himself to put on a few extra pounds of muscle. Instead of bulking up 15-20 pounds between shows, he kept his goals smaller. He bulked up six or seven pounds and then quickly switched over to cutting down for prime conditioning.
He also received some notes from the judges as the Texas Pro about his posing. Posing is something that can improve without risk of damaging the quality of a bodybuilder’s physique. So he made sure to put improved focus on posing over the past six weeks. If he can further manipulate his physique on stage for the judges – it can give him the edge he needs.
Ultimately, Iain Valliere enjoys staying focused and on point with quick turnarounds between shows. Instead of falling into a slower rhythm looking towards a competition months away – he can stay in competition mode directly after the Texas Pro and straight through the Arnold Classic and to the Olympia.
With a positive outlook by fans with each competition he’s appeared in – he also has the mental momentum on his side. We can’t wait to see what he brings to the stage this weekend and beyond.

Iain Valliere On The Risk Vs Reward Of Competing In The Arnold Classic & Olympia Back To Back
[embedded content]
Iain Valliere explains why he is doing the Arnold Classic right before the Mr. Olympia – even though he has already qualified.
Iain Valliere has become a big part of the bodybuilding conversation in 2021. He’s had near back to back wins at the Tampa Pro and the Texas Pro. This earned him qualification to the Mr. Olympia. It’s also notable as he knocked out powerhouse Steve Kuclo at the Texas Pro. Despite having already qualified for the Mr. Olympia, Valliere is still set to compete at the Arnold Classic before facing off for the Sandow trophy. Why? In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Iain Valliere explains why he wants to compete in both the Arnold Classic and Mr. Olympia.
Typically, when a pro bodybuilder earns Olympia qualification for the year – they stop competing and focus solely on the Olympia competition. This is normally done to preserve all energy on being as perfect as possible for the biggest competition of the year. Iain Valliere is bucking this trend. He’s already competed at the Texas Pro after qualifying for Olympia previously at the Tampa Pro this year. Not only that – but he’s still set to compete at the Arnold Classic.
Competing in many shows within one year – especially close to the Mr. Olympia can be a huge risk. This is for a variety of reasons. Athletes can burn out. They can get thrown off mentally by placing low in a show just before the Olympia. They can also have their physique and conditioning timing thrown off by focusing on one show – only to be a few days off with their conditioning by the time they hit the Olympia weekend.
During our conversation with Iain Valliere, we asked him to explain why he decided to do the Arnold Classic. Did he consider skipping the show to focus solely on the Mr. Olympia? Iain Valliere is not oblivious to the importance of this decision – and he certainly considered skipping the Arnold Classic to focus on Olympia. Ultimately, he decided to stick the course.
“It was a discussion especially after winning Texas it’s like, you know, I knew my stock was high,” Iain Valliere stated in our interview. He continued:
“And I knew that I had a lot of moment going into the Olympia. Basically the last two shows of the season I had won… But at the end of the day I know that I get better as shows go on. I think Tampa right to Texas one week apart is indicative of that.”
There’s a risk vs reward aspect to competing at competitions so close to each other. It seems Iain Valliere is confident that this will actually help him stay focused and improve rather than throw him off. If it works out – we might see the best version of Valliere step onto the stage.
In fact, he believes the Arnold Classic being closer to the Olympia is better than it’s typical dates. For those looking to compete at the Olympia, the Arnold Classic falls right in off season. This, Valliere argues, is more damaging to prep than if the competitions were close together as they are this year.
You can watch Iain Valliere go into even more detail about his recent string of victories and his plans for the Arnold Classic and Mr. Olympia in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above!
Iain Valliere Deadlifts 675lb Five Times Ahead Of 2021 Arnold Classic
Iain Valliere is showing incredible feats of strength ahead of competition.
Iain Valliere has had an incredible year showing off his physique on stage during bodybuilding competitions. Now, Valliere is turning more heads with some recent posts about his incredible weightlifting prowess.
Valliere has made headlines by winning Men’s Bodybuilding in both the Tampa Pro and Texas Pro this year. On Monday, he posted a video on Instagram crushing a 675lb deadlift five times just three weeks before the 2021 Arnold Classic.
“Them: “But Iain, why risk it if you’re 3 weeks out!?”
Me: “and that’s why no one will remember your name” ?
7 plates for 5. I just can’t help myself ??.”
By the looks of Valliere’s captions, he knows that this might not be a popular method of training, but he has plenty of experience. Bodybuilders usually do not lift heavy this close to competition because their calories are restricted. Instead, Valliere is looking extremely strong as he approaches the 2021 Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 25.
This deadlift is no easy feat obviously because of the amount of weight and the number of reps. To make it more impressive, Iain Valliere is patient with his lifts and keeps perfect technique. The weight is forcing he bar to bend but on the way down, Valliere stays in control and allows it to settle on the floor before attempting his next rep.
This is not the first time that we have seen a bodybuilder train with heavy weight before competition. In 2003, Ronnie Coleman deadlifted 800lb with the Olympia right around the corner. Coleman would go on and win the competition. This would be the sixth of his eight in a row from 1998-2005.
Iain Valliere is also qualified to compete in the 2021 Olympia, which will be held from Oct. 7-10 in Orlando. It will be interesting to see if he keeps lifting heavy, even with the biggest competition of the year coming up. Valliere has been training heavy in Florida with reigning Classic Physique Olympia champion — and his brother-in-law — Chris Bumstead. Together, there is no doubt of the weight that has been moving down south.
Valliere has had a strong year to this point and will look for it to continue with the two biggest events of the year coming up. We will have the chance to see Valliere compete twice over the next six weeks and there could be some big performances on the horizon.

Texas Pro Preview: Can Steve Kuclo hold off Iain Valliere and Philip Clahar?
Can Steve Kuclo hold off Iain Valliere and Philip Clahar?
The Texas Pro is upon us and will feature some of the best bodybuilders in the world. The competitors list is absolutely stacked, particularly in the Men’s Open Bodybuilding division. With competitors like Steve Kuclo, Iain Valliere and Phillip Clahar, the Texas Pro is sure to be an incredible show.
With so much talent on stage and only one opportunity to punch a ticket to the Olympia, who will earn the top spot?
Steve Kuclo
A favorite to win the show just a few weeks ago, Steve Kuclo now has a bunch of top competitors to contend with. Kuclo has been looking absolutely impressive heading into the Texas Pro. Hoping to win at home, Kuclo will now have his hands full with Iain Valliere and Phillip Clahar. It’s anyone’s guess as to which man will have the advantage heading into the show. What is certain is that Steve Kuclo possesses the kind of grainy physique and impressive improvements to potentially outshine the competition.
Iain Valliere
Fresh off an impressive victory at the Tampa Pro, Iain Valliere is looking to spoil someone’s Olympia hopes at the Texas Pro. Many have questioned why Iain Valliere would make this move after earning a spot at the Olympia. But when consider it, it’s actually a brilliant move. If he can claim victory at the Texas Pro it means lessening the competition at the Olympia. Should he lose however he’ll definitely lose a bit of momentum heading into the Olympia. With Phillip Clahar at the show and Steve Kuclo looking beastly, Valliere surely has his hands full at this show.
Phillip Clahar
While he may not have picked up a victory at the Tampa Pro, Phillip Clahar is riding a wave of momentum heading into the Texas Pro. Clahar nearly defeated Iain Valliere at Tampa and clearly has the physique to contend with the best of the best. He could be the dark horse of the competition. He has the potential to crush the competition and earn his spot at the Olympia. His conditioning and his back development is top notch and could potentially see him securing victory.
Here is the full list of competitors at the Texas Pro.

His showing at the Chicago Pro was impressive, taking third place behind Hunter Labrada and ahead of veteran Roelly Winklaar. Charles Griffen
After not competing for two years, many people are wondering if Charles Griffen has the goods to win at the Tampa Pro. With a great deal of potential, Griffen’s recent Instagram posts showcase a bodybuilder who contend with anyone in the world.

Roelly Winklaar Appears To Be Out of Tampa Pro
Is Roelly Winklaar out of the 2022 Tampa Pro?
It appears that an interesting development has occurred in regards to veteran bodybuilder Roelly Winklaar. The long-time competitor had set his sights on the Tampa Pro after a disappointing showing at the Chicago Pro. That appears to have changed now as it appears that Roelly could be out of the show.
Recently a new competitors list went live to build some hype ahead of the Tampa Pro. With saw some familiar names on the list, namely Iain Valliere who is looking impressive heading into the show. We expected to see Vailliere face off against Roelly Winklaar at the show. The problem is Roelly’s name was nowhere to be found on the competitors list.
But with his absence from the list of competitors, many have speculated Roelly Winklaair is out of the Tampa Pro. Below is the competitors list for Men’s Open Bodybuilding.
2021 Tampa Pro Competitors List
With Roelly Winklaar potentially out, that leaves only Iain Valliere and Maxx Charles at the top of the heap. Both competitors have what it takes to earn their opportunity to compete at the 2021 Olympia. While Charles has been very impressive in recent showings he’ll have all he can handle taking on Valliere.
As for Roelly Winklaar it’s unclear where he stands. If he doesn’t compete here his chances of being able to qualify for the Olympia will grow even more slim. For now we’ll have to wait and see. Rumors have surfaced that he could compete in Spain, but that has yet to be confirmed.
What do you think of Roelly Winklaar potentially being out of the Tampa Pro?

Iain Valliere Gives Physique Update Ahead Of Tampa Pro 2021
Iain Valliere has been active on social media showing progress ahead of the Tampa Pro 2021.
Iain Valliere has been on a roll over the last few years. He has been a force in the bodybuilding game and it seems like that is going to continue moving forward. Valliere has been active on Instagram posting updates on his physique ahead of his next major competition.
The Tampa Pro 2021 is less than two weeks away. It will begin on Aug. 5 at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay. Valliere has been giving his 245k followers on Instagram an update on his progress ahead of the competition for nearly two months now. It has intensified recently and Valliere looks ready to go.
“Save a spot for me ? @mrolympiallc #2weeksout @ptuor”
The Tampa Pro is a show that Iain Valliere has had success in. He placed third in 2019 and earned a second-place finish at the show in 2020. Valliere looks primed to get his first victory at the Tampa Pro 2021.
Iain Valliere burst onto the scene with his pro card in 2014 and began competing in 2015. He has earned 10 top-five finishes since becoming a pro. This was highlighted with a victory at the New York Pro 2020. This earned Valliere an automatic qualification for the Olympia. He has appeared just one time at the biggest competition of the season. This came in 2018 when Valliere finished 14th.
The Tampa Pro 2021 will be the 14th anniversary of the competition. Hunter Labrada, who just took home first place at the Chicago Pro 2021, was the only competitor to beat out Valliere at last year’s competition. Labrada has earned his qualification to the 2021 Olympia with his victory in Chicago.
Iain Valliere will enter Tampa Bay as one of the favorites in the competition. If Instagram is any indication, he certainly looks ready to make a splash on Aug. 5 and in future competitions.
Make sure to check out the full results of the Tampa Pro 2021 next weekend at Generation Iron. For more news and updates, follow Generation Iron on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
