Eddie Hall & Martins Licis Revealed as Captains for 2023 World’s Strongest Nation

Eddie Hall & Martins Licis Revealed as Captains for 2023 World’s Strongest Nation

Giants Live has announced exciting news regarding one of their competitions later this year. This event is called 2023 World’s Strongest Nation, and it will be held in Liverpool, England on November 18th, 2023. This competition will feature two nations, “Team UK” and “Team USA”. However, someone has to be there to lead the teams, which is why Eddie Hall and Martins Licis will be captains of their own teams.
This will be the second edition of the 2023 World’s Strongest Nation contest, as the same two countries battled in 2022 as well. In addition, both Eddie Hall and Martins Licis were also the captains of Team UK and Team USA last year as well. However, the original captain for Team USA was supposed to be Robert Oberst, but he withdrew for unknown reasons and Licis took over the role.
Eddie Hall and Martins Licis now have some time to analyze and think about who the members of their teams will be. Both men will choose four men and four women who will compete for the glory of their nation.

During last year’s clash between Teams UK and USA we got to see some exciting events and mind-blowing feats of strength. The most notable one came from Gabi Dixson who put up an incredible performance during the Hercules Hold event. Gabi managed to outperform the majority of athletes in this event, including both men and women. The only athlete she could not beat was the legendary Mark Felix, who held the pillars 20 seconds longer than her. However, she still beat the likes of Martins Licis, Kevin Faires, and Gavin Bilton.
The 2022 World’s Strongest Nation competition ended with Team UK outperforming Team USA. Accordingly, it is reasonable to expect that Team USA will make additional roster changes this year. However, the full lineups will also be revealed soon enough.
Eddie Hall and Martins Licis have both shown their great abilities as leaders, but that is mostly due to their incredible careers. Both men have been crowned as the World’s Strongest Man, Hall in 2016 and Licis in 2019.
Eddie Hall was also the first man to deadlift 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds), but the record was later broken by Hafthor Bjornsson. A few years later, the resentment between Hall and Bjornsson grew and they arranged a boxing match. Hall lost on a decision from the judges and began a new chapter in his life. He is now preparing for his bodybuilding debut which is scheduled to take place in late 2024.
On the other hand, Martins Licis is still a very active Strongman athlete who has won eight major competitions during his career, including one in 2022. He came out victorious in the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic, and took part in some more competitions during the year. However, once the 2022 season concluded, Martins decided to temporarily stop competing. He stated that he won’t take part in any competitions in 2023, but he was still lured by the captain’s role in the 2023 World’s Strongest Nation competition.

After witnessing the impressive inaugural edition of the World’s Strongest Nation competition, it is safe to say that this year’s event will be equally thrilling and captivating. Eddie Hall and Martins Licis have also proven to be great captains and showmen. So, they will make sure to make their duel as entertaining as possible.

With the competition three weeks away, Licis will have one final deadlift session before heading to Sacramento.

Licis won the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic in Columbus, OH. This was a competition that featured many of the top strongmen in the world, such as the Stoltman Brothers and Oleksii Novikov. The Ukrainian strongman finished second to Licis and is another competitor to watch come the end of May.
The 2022 World’s Strongest Man competition has a full roster of 30 with some former champions. Reigning champ Tom Stoltman will be looking to make it two in a row while four-time champion Brian Shaw will also be featured. Novikov won the title back in 2020 as well.

Martins Licis
2019 World’s Strongest Man is also pushing himself harder than ever. Licis hasn’t competed for some time now, but if his training is any indication he hasn’t lost one step. We’ll now get to see Licis face off against fellow World’s Strongest Man champion Tom Stoltman. In preparation for the clash Licis is pull out all the stops, squatting a massive 836lbs.

Squatting three times a week is fun ? 836lbs (380kg). Felt light. Moved slow.

Rob Kearney
Not to be outdone Rob Kearney is also pushing himself hard in prep for the Arnold Strongman Classic. Kearney like Martins Licis squatted over 800lbs and looked impressive in doing so.

Squats are still feeling great!! 810lbs (368kg) for a solid 3 reps. Using the Duffalo Bar to save the elbows a little bit as we ramp things up and start lifting heavy!!!

Each of these competitors are looking strong ahead of the Arnold Strongman Classic. Who will be victorious? We’ll just have to wait for March to see.

WATCH: Martins Licis and Justin Medeiros Crush Massive Deadlifts In Workout

Martins Licis and Justin Medeiros put up enormous weight during a workout.
It is not everyday that Strongman and CrossFit are seen together but this happened when Martins Licis and Justin Medeiros took on a workout. Licis shared a video to his YouTube page on Tuesday of the duo crushing some deadlifts that were upwards of 600 pounds.
The last time these two were together was during the 2021 Rogue Invitational. Licis won gold in the strongman competition and set a new world record in Thor’s Hammer with a 136kg (300lb) lift. Medeiros was victorious during the CrossFit event. They continue to be some of the best in their own sport.

Licis won the 2019 World’s Strongest Man competition while Medeiros was named the 2021 Fittest Man on Earth. At XCEL Fitness in Holladay, UT, the duo got together to show off some impressive deadlifts.

Heading into the holidays, it is only right that they showed off their festive spirit. Medeiros was seen wearing an elf’s hat while Licis went all out with a full Santa Claus costume. The session began with some rows on the machine while a makeshift Bag Toss was being set up. Medeiros was discussing the importance of warm-ups and how they can impact the workout.
“I do the same warm-up, which is, I do pigeon stretches, some runner’s lunge, some windshield wipers. I also got a gluten band for gluten activation, monster walks, banded squats, and sumo squats. After that, I’m probably good to go,” Justin Medeiros said.
Once the Bag Toss, which is a strongman event, was set up, Licis explained that the best throws will feel effortless. He cleared the crossbeam with a 20-pound bag while Medeiros was unsuccessful.
The two quickly moved onto deadlifts with some serious weight. Licis told the group to pause below the knee to make sure that there was complete control. Medeiros began with a 500-pound deadlift, which is nearly three times his bodyweight. His weight at the time of the list was not said but he is listed at 190 pounds on the CrossFit website.
Martins Licis was next and completed five reps with 605 pounds. Licis has been lifting heavy in the gym preparing for the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic. He will enter the competition as one of the favorites to take home the prize.
The session ended with one-minute Each bike challenges. The full workout can be viewed on Licis’ YouTube page.
Martins Licis will be back in action from March 3-6 during the Arnold Strongman Classic. Justin Medeiros is in his offseason but is preparing for the 2022 CrossFit Open, which begins on Feb. 24.

Martins Licis Shares Training Regimen Preparing For 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic

Martins Licis Shares Training Regimen Preparing For 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic

Martins Licis shared a video with four days of workouts.
Martins Licis is back and better than ever. During the 2020 season, the former World’s Strongest Man was dealing with some injuries and this kept him out of competition. Upon his return, Licis flexed his muscles and reindeer everyone that he is still a force. Licis won the 2021 Rogue Invitational and is now preparing for the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic.
The roster for this event was recently announced and it features some of the top names in powerlifting. The Arnold Strongman Classic is an invitational event this year since athletes did not have a chance to qualify. Licis was on the list and has accepted his invitation. Now, it is all about preparation.

Martins Licis shared a video to his YouTube channel showing viewers exactly how he trains on a weekly basis. Below, you can find a breakdown of Licis’ four-day workout plan.
[embedded content]
Day 1

Martins Licis began his week with Husafell carries. This is an exercise where he must carry a 200-pound load for 110 meters. This is an object that is difficult to carry because of its shape. This helps Licis target different muscles because of the difficulty of the carry. He does multiple sets before moving onto Atlas stone holds. This is where Licis holds the stone in position, which is just hovering above the ground while not using his legs to squeeze.
Day 2
The second day begins with farmer’s carries and banded deadlifts. Martins Licis puts nearly 500 pounds on the bar to deadlift with resistance bands adding another 180 pounds. He completed between 5-10 reps in each set. Licis then completes pull-ups with a 90-degree elbow hold.

Day 3
It is important for powerlifters to have insanely strong shoulders and it is important to work them out heavily. This is what Martins Licis does on day three. An important event at powerlifting competitions is the log press. Licis completes this exercise without a leg drive and includes some dumbbell shoulder presses. This is one of the most important days of the week as powerlifters have to keep their shoulders at their peak.
Day 4
This is the final day that Licis included in the video and it was a leg day. He begins with some yoke carries and moves onto banded squats. Licis does banded squats because he wants to keep practicing deep squats but this allowed pressure to be taken off his knees.
It is not surprising to see one of the world’s best strongmen push himself to the limit each day. Martins Licis will enter the Arnold Strongman Classic looking for another victory and he will be one of the names to watch.

Martins Licis Sets New World Record With 300-Pound Hammer Lift

Martins Licis Sets New World Record With 300-Pound Hammer Lift

Martins Licis had quite a weekend during the 2021 Rogue Invitational.
Martins Licis made his return to competition over the weekend during the 2021 Rogue Invitational. He ended the event with a championship and even broke a world record in the process. After winning the competition, Licis returned to Dell Diamond in Round Rock, TX to win yet another award.
Licis was one of five competitors to return and attempt to break the world record in Thor’s Hammer Lift. In the end, it was Licis who was able to complete the heaviest lift by getting a new world record of 136kg (300lb) off the ground.

For his victory at the strongman competition, Licis earned the largest winning in the history of the sport at $133,351. After setting the world record in the hammer lift, Licis added another $5,000 to his overall pot.
The Thor’s hammer Lift is a grip challenge. The competitor must hold the handle of the gammer and lift it off the ground to a full standing position. The judge then gives the down command and this is when the weight can be returned to the ground. The competitor could use either hand and even change hands on each attempt. This was a timed competition where athletes had one minute to complete the lift.

Hafthor Bjornsson held the previous world record at 118kg (260lb). Over the weekend, the opening weight was 90.kg (200lb) and all six competitors were successful. It was the raised to 102kg (225lb) and all but Trey Mitchell were successful. It eventually moved up to 125kg (275lb), which was more than Bjornsson’s record. Mikhail Shivlyakov set the initial mark followed by Mateusz Kieliszkowski. Laurence Shahlaei did not control the big lift after initially getting it off the ground.

Josh Thigpen was also eliminated and the weight was moved up to 300lb. Shivlyakov attempted the lift with both hands but miss and Kieliszkowski failed as well. This left Licis to make an attempt and was able to complete it with his left hand. Licis then attempted to lift a 147.3 (325lb) hammer but failed. It did not matter as his 300-pound feat was enough to set a new world record.

Martins Licis has been one of the best strongmen in the world for years now. He won the 2019 World’s Strongest Man title. He has been out of competition for awhile now with different injuries but made his return in Texas and put on a memorable performance.
Licis will certainly be present at upcoming strongman events to continue to put up big numbers. When healthy, there is no doubt that he is one of the top competitors in the sport.
