Samir Bannout Answers: Is There A Middle East Movement Dominating Bodybuilding?

Samir Bannout Answers: Is There A Middle East Movement Dominating Bodybuilding?

[embedded content]
Samir Bannout analyzes the rise of Middle Eastern bodybuilders and the future of bodybuilding champions.
Samir Bannout has the distinction of being the first Middle Eastern bodybuilder to win the Mr. Olympia. A lot has changed since then. The rise of the camel crew and an exceptional focus put on bodybuilders who train in Dubai has increased the dominance of Middle Eastern pro bodybuilders. Most recently, Big Ramy, hailing from Egypt, won the Mr. Olympia title. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Samir Bannout analyzes whether or not this is a Middle East movement that will dominate bodybuilding for years to come.
Samir Bannout is proud to be the first Middle Eastern bodybuilder to win the Mr. Olympia. He also has stayed extremely passionate and focused on the sport of bodybuilding ever since his retirement. Event today, he dedicates himself to further helping improve and educate new generations of bodybuilders to support the sport. So what does he think of the rise of Dubai as a mecca for bodybuilding? And of Big Ramy’s win at the Mr. Olympia 2020? Does he see this as a true movement of Middle Eastern bodybuilding?
Samir Bannout admits that there has been a cultural shift in competitive bodybuilding. Dubai has become a hot spot for bodybuilders. While not all of them are actually from the Middle East, Dubai has become a new mecca that promises unreal transformations for competitors who train there. Brandon Curry is the most notable man to train in Dubai, transform his physique, and become a Mr. Olympia champion.

But of course, this new sort of mecca is also benefiting competitors from the Middle East. Big Ramy is now our current Mr. Olympia champion and we’ve seen the likes of Hadi Choopan and Kamal Elgargni show extreme dominance in the sport.
Samir Bannout is unsure if this is a true long term movement though. He points out that bodybuilding has always been a very diverse and international sport. He’s personally seen many rising bodybuilders across a variety of countries that have him excited for the future of the sport.
On top of that, the past year of pro bodybuilding was marred by COVID-19.Big Ramy certainly deserved the Mr. Olympia and showed his best physique. But there will always be a “what if” about 2019 and 2020. We have no idea how the virus affected the top pros personal lives and training. Samir Bannout believes that perhaps 2021 will be bigger indicator. Will Big Ramy and Hadi Choopan continue to thrive at this year’s Mr. Olympia?
During this interview clip, Samir Bannout also talks about his own success as being the first Middle Eastern Mr. Olympia – and reflects on whether not he retired too soon. As he had mentioned previously, he felt slighted by the sport after his 6th place finish in 1984. This got into his head and took the fun out of the sport. He often wonders if he could have stuck with it and eventually moved past the negativity.

WATCH: 84-Year-Old Carrie Reese Shows Strength With 195lb Deadlift

WATCH: 84-Year-Old Carrie Reese Shows Strength With 195lb Deadlift

Carrie Reese has been showing her feats of strength for a long time and there is no end in sight.
Carrie Reese is no stranger to the gym and has made some noise as a powerlifter. That continued on Friday when a video was shared of the 84-year-old completing a 195lb deadlift during an early-morning training session.
Reese’s gym, Old Skool Iron, shared the video on its Instagram page after Reese completed the lift during a 5 a.m. workout.

“Here she is again, even talking a little smack at 5am and 84yr Carrie Reece (powerlifting grandma) smoking 195lbs with plenty left in the tank,” old skool iron wrote on instagram.
Here she is again is right. Carrie Reese has been making certain lifts look effortless for nearly a decade. She began powerlifting at the age of 74 with a bodyweight of 198.4 pounds. She has since began competing in the 132-pound category. This list is not Reese’s personal best but the ease that she completed it with and the dedication to pull off the feat at such an early hour shows her toughness.

Reese most recently competed on July 10 at the USPA Surf City Open in the Master’s 80+ division. She competed in the 125.4-pound division and completed an 82.6 pound bench press and a 203.9 pound deadlift.
Carrie Reese currently holds world records in the bench press and deadlift in her weight and age division. These were completed while competing in the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters. Reese currently holds a personal best of a 91.5-pound raw bench press and 217.1-pound raw deadlift.
Reese began her powerlifting career at 74 but there is no end in sight. She made that clear in a recent interview with the Richmond Pulse.
“I intend to continue competing until I just drop dead. There’s no stop limit for me,” Reese said.
There is no limit for what a person can do with the right mindset and motivation. Carrie Reese clearly has both and that is why she has a chance to continue to take on big lifts at 84 years old. As long as she wants to do this, there will be plenty of viewers watching and gaining more and more admiration.

Chris Bumstead Gives Health and Physique Update 8 Weeks Out From Olympia

Chris Bumstead Gives Health and Physique Update 8 Weeks Out From Olympia

Chris Bumstead gives update weeks out from the 2021 Olympia.
Chris Bumstead gives a bit of a health and physique update 8 weeks out from the 2021 Olympia. It appears that the Classic Physique Olympia champion has turned a corner as far as his health is concerned.
There’s no doubt about it, Chris Bumstead  showed exactly what kind of physique he can bring to the stage when he’s fully healthy. At the 2020 Olympia, Bumstead looked much improved over his 2019 showing. Despite capturing the Classic Physique Olympia title back in 2019, Bumstead was going through health issues. In 2018 the affects were even worse. But it appears that he got all that under control at the 2020 show.

That said, when you’ve had health issues in the past a bit of anxiety can remain. You wonder “will it creep up again?” or “have I really beat this issue?” It can be truly daunting especially if it’s effect your work. Chris Bumstead had to face the realities that water retention has affected his physique throughout his career.
Health Update
But it appears that the two-time Classic Physique Olympia champion has some good news to report. After his brother-in-law Iain Valliere picked up a victory at the Tampa Pro, Bumstead took a moment to indulge. Cheat meals have been a thing of a past for Bumstead. When he noticed that it led to affected his physique issues he nixed them. But it seems that those issues aren’t a problem for the champ these days.
Chris Bumstead took to Instagram to describe his current condition as well as a bit of a physique update.

A few years back I had some health issues that have continued to affect me physically and mentally on and off through the years. I try not to talk about it as I don’t want to put my energy on it, but this past weekend was an exciting moment for me.
A huge thing I notice in my body is inflammation and water retention, especially after any form or “cheat meal” or lots of sodium. For this reason I have been much more health conscious and strict with my diet year round and really haven’t had any cheat meals during my preps, but I still have moments of fear and anxiety that it will come back.
This last weekend after Iain’s big win we went out and I indulged in a cheat meal because my body was in a good place.
For the first time since 2017 I woke up the next morning with no water retention actually looking better than the day before and the even bigger win for me was that I wasn’t anxious about my health.
It doesn’t mean I’ll never experience it again and I’ll most certainly still get some anxiety around it, but I am extremely grateful to be where I am at right now and learning to just enjoy the present and enjoy what is rather than fear what isn’t.

It’s good to see that Chris Bumstead is operating on all cylinders. If he continues to push himself it’s very likely that he’ll repeat as Olympia champion at the 2021 show.
What do you think of this update by Chris Bumstead?

100-Year-Old Edith Murway-Traina Becomes Oldest Competitive Powerlifter

100-Year-Old Edith Murway-Traina Becomes Oldest Competitive Powerlifter

On her 100th birthday, Edith Murway-Traina set a world record becoming the oldest competitive powerlifter.
They saw age is just a number. This is especially true for Edith Murway-Traina.
At 100 years old, Murway-Traina is the oldest competitive powerlifter breaking the world record, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. She turned 100 on Aug. 8 and was able to celebrate her birthday by accomplishing something great.
“Lifting weights upwards of 40-150 pounds, Edith is smashing the competitive powerlifting circuit, dazzling viewers and judges alike with her graceful lifts,” a Guinness World Record press release says.
Amazingly, Edith Murway-Traina was not always a powerlifter. She grew up as a dancer and eventually went onto teach the art. She idolized the likes of Shirley Temple and Ginger Rogers. This led her to dance and it ended up being a road to powerlifting. Through dance, she met Carmen Gutworth, who introduced her to the gym at 91 years old. This is when Murway-Traina began training in the gym.

Murway-Traina did not always plan to become a competitive lifter. Once she began lifting at the gym, she enjoyed it so much that competing seemed like the best logical move.
“While I was watching those ladies doing their thing, I thought I just as well should pick up a few bars, and I did,” Murway-Traina said.
“Going on a regular basis, I found that I was enjoying it, and I was challenging myself to get a little bit better and a little bit better. Before long, I was part of the team.”
She last competed in 2019 when she was 98 years old. Murway-Traina was forced to take a break from competing due to the COVID-19 pandemic but she is not finished just yet. Murway-Traina plans to return to competition in November and she will continue to extend her record moving forward.
“As a performer and a dancer, applause was always a very important part of my enjoyment,” Murway-Traina said. “As long as I could get a little bit of applause, I was happier each I time I got more and more applause. Once people found out I was in my nineties and I was doing all of these things, it got to be more noticeable. People got to pay attention more.”
This happened right away as Murway-Traina began racking up trophies and recognition during her early days as a powerlifter.
Below, Edith Murway-Traina’s record-breaking lifts can be seen in a recent YouTube video on the Guinness World Records page. While continuing to total some personal achievements, Murway-Traina is showing that it is never too late to get into something new. More importantly, it is never too late to better yourself and accomplish personal goals.

Could We See Mariusz Pudzianowski vs Hafthor Bjornsson in September?

Could We See Mariusz Pudzianowski vs Hafthor Bjornsson in September?

It looks as if we could be potentially getting closer to a Hafthor Bjornsson versus Mariusz Pudzianowski showdown. The rumored bout between the two former World’s Strongest Man champions was just that, a rumor. But it appears that Mariusz is adding fuel to the fire with a recent new post.
When 2017 World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall announced he was out of his September fight with Hafthor Bjornsson, a ton of fans were let down by the news. The two rivals had done a great job building anticipation for the bout. With both men training for two years to prepare for the showdown it appeared that they were treating this battle with full seriousness.

Then Eddie Hall suffered his unfortunate bicep tear.
Suffice it to say, it truly put a damper on things. With other fighters set to be on the card and wanting to do battle himself, Hafthor Bjornsson has expressed interest in remaining on the card. But if he were to remain, who would he fight?
Well it appears that the rumor is none other than former multiple-time World’s Strongest Man champion Mariusz Pudzianowski.
After dominating the competition throughout his strongman career, Mariusz Pudzianowski would move on to competing in mixed martial arts. Most of his matches would take place under the Polish KSW MMA promotions banner. Mariusz has recently been floating the idea of a match up between himself and Hafthor Bjornsson in place of the Eddie Hall bout. Mariusz took to Instagram to inform the masses that negotiations are on the table for the potential bout.

It’s getting closer to finalizing the contract! However, Poland and KSW are less complicated than the west. Slowly, it doesn’t matter if there will be this fight or not, but I have to be ready because anything can happen. I never “CHEAP LEATHER DOESN’T SELL $$$ !!!” @thorbjornsson @pudzianofficial When it comes to fruition it will be quite a challenge for hell !!!! ???? Only boxing and I am a boxer like a goat’s ass with a trumpet, and what am I going to pour and it hurts !!!!
Ps: If he hits, bert may drop me, but he has to hit and catch me ?????

This would be a pretty interesting replacement bout for the Eddie Hall fight. Mariusz Pudzianowski has his fair share of fight experience, albeit in MMA rather than boxing. That experience will translate over well in the ring. As for the Hafthor Bjornsson, his exhibition matches have done well to help him acclimate to the boxing ring. If this fight does indeed get signed we could see a rather entertaining showdown between two World’s Strongest Man champions to replace the other.
Would you tune in to see Hafthor Bjornsson versus Mariusz Pudzianowski?

George Farah: Don’t Eat More Animal Protein Than 25% Of Your Caloric Intake

George Farah: Don’t Eat More Animal Protein Than 25% Of Your Caloric Intake

[embedded content]
George Farah talks about the big misconceptions about animal protein consumption in bodybuilding.
George Farah is a legendary bodybuilding coach who has used his later years to warn bodybuilders about big misconceptions that can lead to massive health risks. He’s already spoken with us about the risks of insulin and unhealthy bulking. Now he’s warning bodybuilders about eating too much animal protein. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, George Farah explains why bodybuilders should not eat more animal protein than 25% of their entire caloric intake.
Protein is a main staple of bodybuilding. This is the most basic knowledge about bodybuilding. It’s the first thing everyone learns when trying to build muscle. The easiest way to get protein comes from animals. Old school images of Arnold Schwarzenegger eating massive amounts of steak and eggs come to mind from Pumping Iron.
But as science advances, we are starting to learn different ways of obtaining protein beyond animals. Schwarzenegger himself has become a proponent of veganism and was a part of the documentary The Game Changers. George Farah also agrees. Bodybuilders are eating too much animal protein and it’s bad for their long term health.
George Farah is not saying that bodybuilders should become vegan or vegetarian. Instead, he’s emphasizing that animal protein is being abused with much too high consumption compared to their overall caloric intake. This, Farah claims, can lead to long term issues with your kidneys down the road. He’s experienced it himself, between liver and kidney problems and having cancer, Farah focuses now on longevity in bodybuilding.

The biggest thing George Farah wants to make clear is that he’s not saying to avoid all meat. He doesn’t want to be labeled unrealistic by claiming vegan bodybuilders can achieve the same mass as meat eaters. But he does believe that the amount of animal protein bodybuilders eat is beyond what is necessary. It takes more focus on your diet – but you can still hit the right level of protein without relying majorly on animal products.
Here’s what George Farah stated in our latest interview:
“If you get a bunch of people [doctors/experts] and sit down and talk to them. They will all agree with you that if you go more than 25% of your daily caloric intake from protein. You’ll have some type of problem… it’s been proven for longevity it’s not good to have more than 25% animal food.”
More specifically, George Farah ties in the high protein consumption with anabolic steroids. He claims that going over 25% of animal protein in your diet in combination with anabolic steroids will increase chances significantly for kidney damage.
“They say where there’s a smoke, there’s a fire,” George Farah states in our interview. He continues, “There’s a reason a lot of bodybuilders have kidney problems. What’s the reason? The use of anabolic and high protein intake. Period. Period!”
You can watch George Farah go into detail about protein intake and bodybuilding by watching our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above!

John Meadows, Renowned Bodybuilder And Coach, Reportedly Dies At 49

John Meadows, Renowned Bodybuilder And Coach, Reportedly Dies At 49

John Meadows, former pro bodybuilder and nutritionist/coach has reportedly passed away.
It has been reported that John Meadows has died at 49 years old. He passed away in his sleep on Sunday, August 8th, 2021. At the time of this writing, the exact cause of death has not been revealed. John Meadows is a former IFBB Pro bodybuilder and well known coach. Most recently, he trained IFBB pro bodybuilder Shaun Clarida leading up to his 2020 Men’s 212 Olympia win.
The news has been reported to Generation Iron by multiple sources – but there has been no official announcement made by his family or on John Meadows official social media pages or website.
John Meadows is a bodybuilder who, during his early days in the sport, suffered from a rare colon disease that nearly killed him. Eventually his colon burst and he was rushed to the hospital. Luckily he survived and after months of recovery he returned to bodybuilding to do what he loved. He earned his IFBB Pro card despite these major health setbacks.
His past health conditions gave him a different perspective on bodybuilding and life. His aim became to continually put a focus on his health in a way many people don’t. After retiring from competitive bodybuilding – he continued as a nutritionist and coach. He’s guided many bodybuilders through their pro careers. Most notably, he recently coach Shaun Clarida in 2020 – when he won the Men’s 212 Olympia.

On May 11, 2020, John Meadows suffered from a heart attack due to a clotting disorder in his blood vessels. He was hospitalized but quickly brought back to a stable condition. The news was first announced by his wife, Mary Meadows.
John credits his wife as his biggest influence in life. She was with him through “ups” and “downs,” always supporting his decisions in life. “I couldn’t have done it without her,” John Meadows states of his wife. “When I was sick and got out of the hospital and I was too weak to look after myself, she did everything for me, including sanitary things I can’t talk about.”
“IF I SAY I WANT TO DO SOMETHING, WE’LL TALK ABOUT IT, MAKE SURE IT’S WORKABLE AND THEN SHE GETS BEHIND ME AND SUPPORTS THE IDEA AND ME ALL THE WAY. AND WHEN I’M HURTING THE LAST THREE OR FOUR WEEKS OF MY DIET, SHE SEES THE LOOK ON MY FACE AND SAYS, ‘JUST HANG IN THERE, IT’S GOING TO BE WORTH IT.’ AND I NEED TO HEAR THAT AT THAT STAGE.”
John Meadows soon left the hospital, focused on recovery, and soon returned to coaching pro bodybuilders. Just this weekend, one of his coached athletes, Brooke Walker, won the Europa Phoenix Games 2021 and earned her Olympia qualification. It has not been confirmed that his death was tied to his previous heart attack or blood clotting disorder.
After his recovery, Generation Iron reconnected with John Meadows for a GI Exclusive interview discussing his heart attack, recovery, and future plans in bodybuilding. You can watch the full uncut video below:

John Meadows was a well known and beloved bodybuilder, coach, and husband. He was a vital part of bodybuilding over the past few decades and will be missed severely by the entire community. Generation Iron sends condolences to his friend and family during this time.
While there has been no official announcement of his death by friends and family, bodybuilders have begun sending an outpour of support on social media. The news was reported to us by multiple sources – including our Talking Huge host Craig Golias who directly confirmed with Generation Iron. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

IFBB Tampa Pro 2021 Results

Complete results from the IFBB Tampa Pro 2021.
Another weekend, another set of qualifications handed out. The IFBB Tampa Pro 2021 was the latest competition with athletes gaining an automatic qualification to the 2021 Olympia with a victory. The competition took place on Aug. 6-7 at the Grand Hyatt in Tampa and featured some of the top competitors in the world.
Heading into the event, Iain Valliere has been a huge name to watch. He has finished in the top three in each of the last two Tampa Pros. In 2020, Valliere finished second behind Hunter Labrada, who qualified for the Olympia with a victory at the Chicago Pro 2021. Maxx Charles and Charles Griffen were other names to keep an eye on. Charles has a chance to qualify for the Olympia off points alone while Griffen was looking to make some noise in his return. He did not compete since the Tampa Pro 2019.
A glaring name off the list was that of Roelly Winklaar. He made his return during the Chicago Pro 2021 but finished in fifth place. It was assumed that Winklaar would be back on stage here but he was left off the list of competitors that was made public earlier in the week.
There were a total of 10 divisions at the Chicago Pro with winners vying for a qualification to the Olympia. The full results have now been announced. Check out our full breakdown of the IFBB Tampa Pro 2021 results below.

During a Recent Interview, The Rock Explains Why He Has “Messed Up” Abs

The Rock gets abs critiqued by fan.
In a recent interview Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson got his physique taken to task. During the interview his abs were critiqued by a fan. The actor took the question on the chin and gave his reasons for why his abs look the way they do.
With a powerhouse like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson you’d think that there’d be little to critique about him physically. In most every image and video of the actor, he looks absolutely jacked and shredded. Yet despite that people will find a reason to criticize just about anything and everyone. So it was no surprise that fans have critiqued the physique of The Rock.

Brutal Critique
In a recent interview for WIRED, The Rock and his Jungle Cruise co-star Emily Blunt answered fan questions. Among one of the questions was why The Rock had messed up abs.

“That’s f—ked up,” Johnson said with a laugh. “There’s nothing wrong with them. I think because on Instagram, all these Instagram fitness models have these incredible six, eight, twelve, twenty-four pack stomachs. No, I got like a five and a half pack, sometimes a four and a half pack.”

“The problem was, and a lot of people don’t know this, in a wrestling match, I tore the top of my quad off my pelvis. It went bang in a wrestling match, and then what that did was it caused a chain reaction, and it tore my abdomen wall. So then I had to do triple-hernia emergency surgery of a tear, a tear, and a tear… So they’re not like perfect abs.”

Handling Critique Like A Professional
It’s pretty interesting to consider that even someone like The Rock has to take flack. He has worked tirelessly in the gym to cultivate his well earned muscle. Yet people will still criticize the actor and WWE performer despite how far he’s come.
device][/device]

It’s great to see that he had a good sense of humor about it all. Never allow others to shut down your successes. The Rock handling things in this way is a great example on how others should handle criticism.
