However, he has seemingly already recovered, as he is back in the gym performing some mind-blowing feats of strength. In the recent case, Larry went back to one of his most […]

Powerlifter Russel Orhii Crushes 212.5-kg (468.4-lb) Bench Press PR In Prep For a Return To The IPF

Powerlifter Russel Orhii Crushes 212.5-kg (468.4-lb) Bench Press PR In Prep For a Return To The IPF

Russel Orhii is easily one of the greatest powerlifters ever in the 83-kilogram weight class, having won numerous titles across the years. Therefore, it was somewhat surprising that he had not been too active this year in terms of competitions. However, his training sessions were still going strong, and he looks stronger than ever. This is evident by Russel’s numerous recent feats of strength, most notably the new 212.5-kilogram (468.4-pound) Bench Press PR.
Russel Orhii only used wrist wraps to set a 212.5-kilogram (468.4-pound) bench press PR, making it raw. However, Russel had to struggle a lot in order to set this PR, but pushing himself to his limits will only result in even more improvement. Regardless of the grind, Russel still maintained perfect technique, proving why he is one of the greatest powerlifters in the world.

Russel Orhii’s Comeback To The IPF
The context is incredibly important in this story, since Russel Orhii was once a part of the IPF, but has been a USAPL lifter for the past few years. These two powerlifting federations were once connected, but split up after some disagreements. After the split, the athletes had to choose one federation to compete in exclusively.
Russel Orhii evaluated the situation after the split and opted for the USAPL, which no longer seems like the correct option to him. He has now officially left USAPL and revealed exactly why in a recent YouTube video.
“I’m leaving the USAPL. The reason why I am leaving the USAPL is because I want to go back to being a World Champion Powerlifter…
I decided to stay with the USAPL (in 2021), thinking that it would allow me to grow the business of the better brand…
As I have done that, the IPF has taken bigger strides than the USAPL, with just the little things that kind of add to what it means to be a powerlifter.”
Russel Orhii also stated that the IPF will have more big competitions for him, as he was previously only attracted to the USAPL Nationals. Speaking of which, he wanted to claim his sixth USAPL National title later this year, but had to withdraw and turn his attention to the IPF as soon as possible.
While USAPL and IPF were together, the athletes from the USA qualified for the World Championships through the USAPL Nationals. However, due to their split, IPF was forced to set up an affiliate, Powerlifting America (AMP), which now puts on their Nationals as a way to qualify.
“If I want to go to the IPF, I have to serve a six month suspension, and that starts whenever I reinstate myself. So, if I were to compete in the USAPL Nationals, I would then start my suspension. That would have made me eligible to compete in April of 2024. By that time, the AMP Nationals (Qualifier for 2024 IPF Worlds) would have already happened.”
One unusual side effect of Russel Orhii’s situation is that he will end 2023 without making a single appearance in a sanctioned competition. In the past eight years, this has only been the case in 2020.
Regardless, we will soon get to see him compete in the 2024 Powerlifting America (AMP) Nationals, IPF World Championships, and a bit later on, the IPF World Games and IPF Sheffield as well.

Russel Orhii is already a 2x IPF World Champion (2019 & 2021), but his main goal now will be reclaiming his title in 2024. He also stated that he will remain in the 83-kilogram weight class for the foreseeable future, despite some outside speculations that he is moving to the 90-kilogram weight class. So, he is now taking a very big step, but it seems correct, as IPF is currently ruling the drug-tested powerlifting scene.

Powerlifters Brianny Terry And Marianna Gasparyan Become IFBB Pros At 2023 NPC USA Championships

Transitions from one sport to another are not unusual in the fitness community. It is, however, extremely rare to achieve success in one sport and then achieve the same in another. A lot of factors need to line up for this to happen, but Brianny Terry and Marianna Gasparyan decided to take matters into their own hands. Both of the women made incredible careers as powerlifters, but they have now successfully transitioned to bodybuilding. They competed at the 2023 NPC USA Championships and earned their IFBB Pro Cards.
Marianna Gasparyan
Marianna Gasparyan is definitely the most notable women’s athlete in powerlifting, as she still tops the All-Time Rankings with a DOTS score of 709.96. However, she retired from the sport approximately two years ago, and obviously put in a lot of training to build her physique since then.
Overall, Marianna Gasparyan took part in 39 sanctioned powerlifting competitions and won 36 of them. Moreover, she set World Records on over 90 occasions, which helped solidify her as a potential G.O.A.T of powerlifting.
Marianna Gasparyan competed in the lightweight division at the 2023 NPC USA Championships. Having brought in her A-game, Marianna won her division, in turn becoming an IFBB Pro.
Marianna Gasparyan did put in some bodybuilding appearances as well during the past few years. She won the 2020 Savannah Championships and 2023 NPC Worldwide Oksana Grishina International Classic Pro Qualifier. In addition, she has also landed a few top three placings, but nothing measures up to her new gold medal, which earned her the IFBB Pro Card.

Brianny Terry
Brianny Terry’s path to her IFBB Pro Card was a bit tighter than Marianna Gasparyan, as she was not able to win her division. However, to Brianny’s luck, she placed second in Women’s Physique, which was enough for her to become a professional bodybuilder.
Like Marianna Gasparyan, Brianny Terry has also left a massive mark in powerlifting. However, she took part in only ten competitions, but recorded seven impressive victories. Brianny’s legacy was further solidified by her incredible deadlift strength, which she often displayed in competition, as well as in her training sessions. At the moment, it is not clear if Brianny plans on returning to powerlifting.
Brianny Terry started competing in bodybuilding just last year and immediately landed a victory at the 2023 NPC Dallas Championships. She then finished in fourth place at the 2022 NPC USA Championships. So, she jumped up two places this year to earn her IFBB Pro card.

Although Marianna Gasparyan has not yet revealed her plans for the future, Brianny Terry has already updated her competition calendar. She plans to continue training and make her Pro Bodybuilding debut in 2025. According to her Instagram, Brianny is giving herself a significant time period to improve, as competing against the professionals will be a significantly more difficult challenge.
Apart from Marianna Gasparyan and Brianny Terry, a few more notable names have shown interest in both powerlifting and bodybuilding. Even Larry Wheels, a powerlifting World Record holder, is now aiming to compete in the Classic Bodybuilding division and secure his Pro card as well. Hunter Henderson has also reached the top in both powerlifting and bodybuilding, having secured her IFBB Pro card back in 2021. Interestingly, Hunter has also found success in a third sport — Strongwoman.

Powerlifter Emily Hu (60KG) Sets 137.5-kg (303.1-lb) Raw Bench Press All-Time World Record

Emily Hu is a well known name in powerlifting, as she has been on the scene for over a decade now. Nonetheless, she openly acknowledges that her preparation demands a much more delicate approach, considering her age of 41. Still, Emily has mastered powerlifting to its fullest and continues getting stronger and breaking records with ease. She displayed her abilities once again at the recent 2023 WRPF Siege of the Shore, which took place on July 23rd, in San Diego. As a part of her appearance at this meet, Emily has managed to lock out a 137.5-kilogram (303.1-pound) Bench Press for a new All-Time World Record.
With her victory in the raw 60-kilogram weight division, Emily Hu broke Jennifer Thompson’s previous U60KG Bench Press All-Time World Record. Obviously, Jen is an icon of powerlifting, so it is no surprise that it took another legendary lifter like Emily to break it. Jen’s U60KG World Record stood at 136.5 kilograms (300.9 pounds), which she set at the 2012 NAPF Raw Challenge.
Emily Hu opened up her bench press session with a comfortable 125-kilogram (275.6-pound) lift. She then jumped up to 132.5 kilograms (292.1 pounds) and found success again. She then had one chance to set a 137.5-kilogram (303.1-pound) Bench Press World Record and seized it with ease.
Watch the bench press here:

Emily Hu’s Full Performance
Emily Hu weighed in at exactly 59.1 kilograms (130.3 pounds) for her appearance at the 2023 WRPF Siege of the Shore. She then put up an almost perfect performance, only missing one deadlift attempt. She failed to set new competition PRs in everything apart from the bench press, but the World Record was her main goal.

Analyze Lifts

During her 11-year-long powerlifting career, Emily Hu has taken part in 29 sanctioned powerlifting competitions. Often being the best athlete in the roster, Emily has won 20 competitions. Moreover, she has revealed that her recent bench press marks the fourth time that she has set an All-Time World Record, which is another mind-blowing statistic.
Judging by the caption of Emily Hu’s Instagram post, she has been chasing this World Record for multiple years now. She has had to sacrifice a lot to achieve it, but now she “can enjoy life in the 300 club”. As for her future plans, Emily has kept them under wraps for now. Alongside her fitness pursuits, she has been busy with other aspects of her life. In addition to maintaining her own impressive physique, she has also authored a book to help others achieve their fitness goals.

Jimmy Kolb Hits Heaviest Lift In Powerlifting With 635.5-kg (1,401-lb) Equipped Bench Press at 2023 IPA Tri-Star Bash

Jimmy Kolb Hits Heaviest Lift In Powerlifting With 635.5-kg (1,401-lb) Equipped Bench Press at 2023 IPA Tri-Star Bash

There have not been many athletes in any sport as dominant as Jimmy Kolb is in the Equipped Bench Press event. In addition, he has once again improved upon his own World Record, thus discouraging anyone who is hoping to catch up with him. His new historic feat of strength was made at the 2023 IPA Tri-Star Bash, which took place on July 29th, in Elizabethton, TN. Jimmy only had one goal going into the competition, and that was to land a 635.5-kilogram (1,401-pound) equipped bench press. Jimmy, fully aware of his capabilities, carefully selected the perfect target and accomplished the remarkable feat of setting the Heaviest Lift in Powerlifting History.
Jimmy Kolb decided to go all out from his first attempt, and decided to immediately try to bench press 635.5 kilograms (1,401 pounds). However, he was not successful in his first, or second, attempts. With everything on the line, Jimmy stayed calm and collected, ultimately finding success on his final attempt.
The previous All-Time Equipped Bench Press World Record was also held by Jimmy Kolb. It stood at 612.5 kilograms (1,350.3 pounds), which Jimmy achieved at the 2023 IPA Hillbilly Havoc. This World Record was also the Heaviest Lift In Powerlifting. So, with his new bench press of 635.5 kilograms (1,401 pounds), Jimmy further advanced both aforementioned achievements.
Watch the lift from two angles here:

Some people are not fans of the Equipped Bench Press event because of the custom “shirts” that the athletes wear. However, other events in powerlifting, such as squats and deadlifts, also have equipped divisions where athletes use special-made suits to help them lift significantly more weight. Still, the World Records in those events are nowhere near close to Jimmy Kolb’s 635.5-kilogram (1,401-pound) Equipped Bench Press.

*Note: These achievements are only regarding the sport of powerlifting. This is because other sports, such as Strongman, have different rules and regulations.
Even other powerlifters who are Equipped Bench Press specialists are not able to rival Jimmy Kolb, proving just how incredible he is. In fact, Jimmy Kolb is the first and only man to reach the 1,200-lb / 1,300-lb/ and now 1,400-lb milestones in the Equipped Bench Press.
For reference, the next heaviest equipped bench press after Jimmy Kolb belongs to Will Barotti, who locked out 521.6 kilograms (1,150 pounds). So, Jimmy is in the lead by exactly 113.9 kilograms (251 pounds).
Jimmy Kolb has been competing in powerlifting since 2009, and the equipped bench press has always been his main focus. He has taken part in over 51 sanctioned competitions so far and won 42 of them.

Analyze Lifts

To make Jimmy Kolb’s new 635.5-kilogram (1,401-pound) Equipped Bench Press even more impressive, he has managed to achieve it without using any PEDs. This is evident from an official sheet from the competition displayed on Kolb’s Instagram story, which shows that he was drug-tested. So, he has once again secured his place in the history of powerlifting, but it is very likely that he will be setting his sights on an even heavier bench press very soon.

Powerlifter Jamal Browner Sets Huge 235-kg (518-lb) Raw Bench Press PR In Training

Powerlifter Jamal Browner Sets Huge 235-kg (518-lb) Raw Bench Press PR In Training

Despite being a world class powerlifter, Jamal Browner has decided to put his career in this sport on pause and make an appearance in a Strongman competition. This comes in the hopes of setting a new Deadlift World Record, which is why this event has been his primary focus for the past few months. Jamal, however, decided to test his upper body strength, setting a new bench press PR in the process. It now stands at 235 kilograms (518 pounds), which Jamal proved by posting a video to his Instagram page.
It appears that Jamal Browner did not use any equipment whatsoever to set a new 235-kilogram (518-pound) Bench Press PR. Interestingly, this lift was 7.5 kilograms (16.5 pounds) heavier than Jamal’s greatest bench press ever performed in an official competition. If Jamal manages to preserve this strength following his upcoming Strongman event, he has the potential to revolutionize his weight class in powerlifting.
Jamal Browner attributed his newfound strength on the bench press to his recent weight gain. However, he did not reveal what his bodyweight is at the moment.
“Bench is getting stronger even though I’m not really focused on it. Probably from weight gain ? hopefully the gains stay loyal when I cut back down!”
Watch the lift here:

Related: Powerlifter Jamal Browner Crushes 435-kg (959-lb) Raw Conventional Deadlift PR In Training
Jamal Browner will make his next appearance at the 2023 Giants Live World Deadlift Championships, which will be held at the Cardiff International Arena in Wales on September 2nd. He will be one of 15 men attempting to break Hafthor Bjornsson’s World Record of 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds), but as the only powerlifter on the roster.
Jamal Browner has already locked out 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds) in training, but did so by using a sumo stance. This time, he will have to perform the deadlift with a conventional stance, as sumo is prohibited in Strongman. Still, his conventional deadlifts are also mind-blowing, as he was near the 1,000-pound (453.6-kilogram) mark on a number of occasions.
Earlier in his preparation, Jamal Browner revealed that he won’t be using a deadlift suit, although it will be allowed. So, considering how both Eddie Hall and Hafthor Bjornsson used these suits for their half-a-ton deadlifts, Jamal is set to face a very difficult task. He will only rely on the lifting straps, which are forbidden in his main sport of powerlifting.
Jamal Browned already holds one deadlift World Record in powerlifting, but he now wants to prove himself to the Strongman community as well. However, above all, Jamal is an incredible powerlifter, and he has the resume to prove it. Overall, he has taken part in 16 sanctioned competitions and won 11 of them.

Analyze Lifts

Jamal Browner’s new bench press PR has revealed a lot about his current shape. Most importantly, we can now see that he is feeling good and strong, sitting at a heavier bodyweight than usual. According to Jamal, he plans to lose weight after his Strongman outing. So, it remains to be seen if he is able to keep his strength after the process.

Powerlifter John Haack (U90KG) Takes Bronze In His Strongman Debut at 2023 Kaos Classic

John Haack is regarded as potentially the greatest pound-for-pound powerlifter in history, since he set multiple World Records. John is incredibly strong, but he decided to test his skills in Strongman, which involves a bit more unconventional events. After some training, John took part in the 2023 U90KG Kaos Classic, which took place on July 23rd, in the UK. Despite it being his Strongman debut, John managed to finish in third place, which is beyond impressive.
2023 Kaos Classic Point Standings

Dan Benson – 117.5 points
Nick O’Hare – 102 points
John Haack – 102 points
Benjamin Donin – 100 points
Jim Mitchell – 98.5 points
Mike Deli – 98 points
Tyler Davis – 91 points
CJ Krause – 89 points
Leigh Shaw -87.5 points
Tyler Young – 83 points

John Haack’s Performance
The lineup for the 2023 U90KG Kaos Classic was huge, having featured 23 athletes. So, John Haack managed to outperform 20 of his rivals. In fact, he almost finished in second place, but John and Nick O’Hare had the same points in the end. Unfortunately, John lost the tie-breaker and dropped down to third place.
Event One — Max Log Press
The first event of the competition was the Log Press for max weight. John Haack managed to lock out 130 kilograms (286.6 pounds) and tie for 11th place. The Log Press is a very technical event. So, Haack’s adaptation to it in a short time is praiseworthy.

Related: Powerlifter John Haack Cracks 415-kg (914.9-lb) Raw Deadlift PR Ahead of 2023 Ghost Clash
Event Two — Axle Deadlift
The second event was more up John Haack’s alley, as the deadlift is one of the three events in powerlifting as well. So, with the task being to perform as many reps with 290 kilograms (639.3 pounds), John managed to finish second. His final score was 10 repetitions, just one less than the winner of the event, Dan Benson.
However, Dan Benson and other athletes put on a deadlift suit for this event, while John Haack completed it with just a lifting belt and lifting straps.

Event Three — Husafell Distance
The third event tasked the athletes with picking up and carrying a 150-kilogram (330.7-pound) Sandbag Husafell and carrying it for max distance. John was surprisingly good in this event, finishing in third place with a distance of 65.90 meters.
Event Four — Farmer’s Carry
For the fourth event, the athletes had to pick up a 135-kilogram (297.6-pound) Farmer’s Carry implement in each hand and carry it for three lengths of 10 meters as quickly as possible. John Haack’s grip strength from raw deadlifts transferred well to this event, securing him a fourth-place finish with a time of 27.09 seconds.
Event Five — Yoke Into Sandbag Load
The fifth event was devastating for John Haack since he finished in 15th place and lost a lot of points. He was able to complete the 340-kilogram Yoke carry and one of the 120-kilogram Sandbag loads in a time of 21.26 seconds. Had he performed better in this event, John would have had a legitimate chance at winning the competition.
Event Six — Power Stairs
The final event of the competition was the Power Stairs, and John Haack spent some time preparing for them in training. So, it is no surprise that he won the event and took max points. In fact, it only took him 27.92 seconds to carry 160-kg / 170-kg / 180-kg implements up a flight of three stairs.
However, he then had to perform a Husafell Hold tiebreaker for second place against Nick O’Hare, but lost as he was the first man to drop the implement.

Analyze Lifts

It is not clear if John Haack plans on continuing his journey in Strongman, but he definitely has loads of talent for it. Powerlifting, however, remains his first love and he is also the undisputed champion of his weight class. There are numerous possibilities, so it remains to be seen what John thinks is best for him.

Larry Wheels Hospitalized With Rhabdomyolysis

Larry Wheels has been going through a lot lately, focusing on developing his strength, building an incredible physique, and as of recently, launching his first public gym. Unfortunately, all the time Larry invested in his gym, aiming to better himself, led to a significant setback. In fact, it was even something that could develop into a fatal hazard. On July 25th, Larry shared a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed, with IV’s connected to his veins. Furthermore, in the post’s caption, Larry disclosed that he has been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition that has been fatal in some cases.
“I fked around and got Rhabdo. light headed af”
Rhabdomyolysis is most often caused by overtraining, and its symptoms are similar to muscle inflammation, but often develop into much more severe pains. Basically, when a person suffers from rhabdomyolysis, their injured muscles can break down, releasing the Myoglobin protein into the bloodstream.
In turn, Myoglobin can damage the kidneys, affecting their work rate or potentially even causing kidney failure. In the worst cases, rhabdomyolysis has even caused the deaths of people who had it.
The symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include weakness, muscle pain, darkening of the urine, and lightheadedness. However, rhabdo is curable, so Larry Wheels should be back to his best after some treatments.

Related: Larry Wheels Cranks Out 405 Lbs Bench Press In A Joint Training Session With Stefi Cohen
Interestingly, rhabdo is a fairly rare disease, as approximately 26,000 cases are reported in the USA each year. So, it is something that should be paid attention to, but not overly scared of it.
CrossFit and UFC athletes are some of the most frequent people who get rhabdo due to their highly-intense training sessions. So, as a result of his intense gym efforts, Larry Wheels ended up with rhabdomyolysis. However, it does not come as a huge surprise, since he has been going all out in preparation for his Classic Bodybuilding debut. He recently revealed what exactly attracted him to this division of bodybuilding as well.
In preparation for his Classic Bodybuilding debut, Larry Wheels partnered up with William Bonac in order to get some posing tips. Larry then also revealed that his coach assured him that nothing apart from TRT would be needed for him to be competitive in the Classic Bodybuilding division. This seemed to be correct, as Larry’s physique looked incredible in every update that he shared.
It is a known fact by now that Larry Wheels has stopped using PEDs and Steroids. However, since then, he has looked like a brand new person. He began looking younger and healthier, while also slimming down to an incredibly shredded physique. His strength has also been impressive, as Larry tested his limits in a powerlifting mock meet.
