Powerlifter Bradon Gulch Attempts 525-lb Tom Platz Squat Challenge, Impresses with 21 Reps

Powerlifter Bradon Gulch Attempts 525-lb Tom Platz Squat Challenge, Impresses with 21 Reps

Bodybuilding has produced many legends, but few have been as iconic as Tom Platz. Tom was, and is to this day, recognized for his incredible lower body workouts, which have proven to be quite effective considering the size of Platz’s legs. Tom became known as the “Quadfather” for good reason. His legs weren’t just a sight to behold, they were also incredibly strong, with some of his impressive feats still unmatched today. His quad muscles were the stuff of legend, and he rightly earned his place among the greats of bodybuilding and strength training. The most remarkable one was his 23-rep squat set with 525 pounds on the barbell. Platz completed this set in 1992, and ever since many world-class athletes have attempted to match it.
Everyone knows the best squatters usually come from powerlifting, which is why it’s no surprise to see a lot of them taking on the Tom Platz Challenge. Most recently, Bradon Gulch was the man who gave his maximum effort to achieve the incredible feat. In addition, he came extremely close to matching Tom Platz’s result, having performed only two reps less than him. So, after reaching his limit, Bradon ended up with a 21-rep 525-pound squat set.
Bradon Gulch utilized a pair of knee sleeves and a lifting belt to complete this set, making it raw by the majority of standards. In addition, Bradon is just 22-years-old, making his attempt even more impressive. He didn’t seem to struggle much until he hit his 18th rep, but he pushed through and managed to eke out three more. In the end, Bradon failed while attempting his 22 repetition, as he was not able to get up from the squatting position. After the spotters took the barbell from his back, Bradon fell back and decided to remain on the floor until the burning sensation in his legs started to dull.

Bradon Gulch isn’t the first elite powerlifter to tackle Tom Platz’s squat challenge. Joe Sullivan attempted the same challenge a year ago. In spite of being a World Record holder, Joe was only able to complete 20 repetitions, putting him behind Bradon.
The bodyweight of Tom Platz during his 23-rep 525-pound squat set was 198 pounds, while Bradon Gulch’s bodyweight was unknown at the time of the attempt. Just two weeks prior to his attempt, Bradon participated in a powerlifting competition, where he weighed 271.2 pounds.

It is also important to note that Bradon Gulch is focused on improving his one rep max on the squat and not improving his AMRAP sets. So, the heaviest official squat of his career came out to 705.4 pounds, which is significantly heavier than Platz’s reported PR of around 600 pounds. So, it all depends on one’s primary goals.
Overall, Bradon Gulch took part in 11 sanctioned powerlifting competitions, winning seven of them. Even though he has been competing for only two years, it is apparent that he will continue to improve for years to come.
Bradon Gulch’s Competition PR

Squat: 320 kilograms (705.4 pounds) — (2022 USAPL Liftmas Open)
Bench Press: 212.5 kilograms (468.4 pounds) — (2023 USAPL Arnold Pro Bench)
Deadlift: 300 kilograms (661.4 pounds) — (2022 USAPL Liftmas Open)
Total: 825 kilograms (1,818.8 pounds) — (2022 USAPL Liftmas Open)

Bradon Gulch seems to be the closest man to Tom Platz’s record currently, as two reps don’t seem too far away. In addition, as explained earlier, if Bradon decides to work on his AMRAP instead of a One-Rep Max at some point, it is very likely that he would be able to surpass the 23 reps performed by Tom Platz.

72-YO Powerlifter Shelly Stettner Scores New Raw 265-lb Squat & 155-lb Bench Press All-Time PRs

72-YO Powerlifter Shelly Stettner Scores New Raw 265-lb Squat & 155-lb Bench Press All-Time PRs

Among the greatest Masters powerlifters in the world, Shelly Stettner founded the belief that no one is ever too old to become the best in what they want. Now, she is once again continuing to prove her statements, having just landed new squat and bench press Personal Records (PRs) at the age of 72-years-old. In addition, Shelly shared both of her new achievements on Instagram.
The first PR that Shelly Stettner locked out was the squat of 265 pounds (120.2 kilograms). She did so by putting on a pair of knee sleeves and a lifting belt, dropping under the barbell, and easily squatting 265 pounds (120.2 kilograms).
Shelly Stettner then scored another personal record on the bench press. After a few warm-up sets, Shelly ramped up to a 155-pound (70.3-kilogram) bench, the heaviest she has ever lifted. Although it did not look as easy as her squat PR, the bench press still looked quite comfortable for Shelly.

In addition, Shelly also set four new masters IPF World Records at the Masters’ Championships.

Shelly Stettner has encountered some difficulties during her preparation for the 2023 AMP Nationals. She has had to work around problems with injuries and new rulesets for some time now. However, none of these setbacks were enough to stop Shelly, who now set new PRs in the bench press and the squat.

Powerlifter Laura Sancho (82.5KG) Scores Huge 263-kg (579.8-lb) Raw Deadlift British Record

The professional powerlifting scene is witnessing a wave of brand new amazing athletes in the sport and the newest one comes from Wales. The 2023 GPC-GB Welsh National Championships took place on April 30th, 2023, in Swansea, and Laura Sancho stood out as a notable competitor. Laura competed in the Knee With Wraps division and won the female division overall. However, that was not the peak of her experience, since she also set a new British Raw Deadlift Record in the 82-kilogram weight class.
Laura Sancho started off with a relatively light deadlift of 230 kilograms (507 pounds), which was just enough to fire her up for the next two attempts. She immediately broke the British Record on the second attempt of 250 kilograms (551.1 pounds), but that was not enough for her.
Laura Sancho decided to load 263 kilograms (579.8 pounds) for her third and final attempt. After approaching the barbell with just some chalk and a lifting belt, Laura positioned herself perfectly for a conventional stance pull. She then grabbed the bar with a mixed grip, pulled out the slack, and crushed her third attempt for a new U82.5KG British Record.
The previous British record was also in Laura Sancho’s possession, as she lifted 247.5 kilograms (545.6 pounds) at the 2022 GPC-GB British Finals. So, with almost six months of preparation, Laura managed to add 15.5 kilograms (34.2 pounds) to her deadlift.

Laura Sancho has been competing for less than two years, but she has already accumulated six sanctioned appearances. What is even more impressive is that she is still holding a perfect streak, having won each of the six competitions. Moreover, her recent 263-kilogram (579.8-pound) raw deadlift is the Fourth-Heaviest in the world at her weight class of 82.5 kilograms. So, she is getting close to the World Record territory as well.
We do not know what Laura Sancho’s future plans are at this time. Nonetheless, as she has seen improvement in all events, she is likely to continue to raise her goals and chase records in the future.

Powerlifter Reece Fullwood (125KG) Sets 412.5-kg (909.4-lb) Raw Squat All-Time World Record

Coming into the 2023 GPC-GB Welsh National Championships, Reece Fullwood did not have too high expectations. The competition was held on one day only, April 30th, in Swansea, so Reece had the goal of completing it without any injuries. However, his achievements reached miles above that, since Reece managed to set a new All-Time World Record Raw Squat in the 125-kilogram weight class.
Reece Fullwood opened his performance with a 360-kilogram (793.6-pound) squat, which immediately looked way too easy for him. So, for the second attempt, he made a jump of 30 kilograms (66.1 pounds) for a squat of 390 kilograms (859.8 pounds). This second attempt was nothing more difficult than his first one, as he made it look like a warm-up.
However, having full confidence in his abilities, Reece Fullwood made another massive weight jump and loaded a 412.5-kilogram (909.4-pound) squat. Equipped with just a lifting belt, knee sleeves, and a swagger pair of glasses, Reece managed to push through and lock out a brand new All-Time World Record Raw Squat.
The previous record holder in the 125-kilogram weight class was Phillip Herndon. He set the old squat World Record at the 2023 USPC Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship by squatting 411 kilograms (906.1 pounds). So, not even two months have passed since Herndon set the record, but Reece Fullwood has already outperformed it.

Powerlifter Russel Orhii Scores a Huge 337.5-kg (744-lb) Raw Squat Two-Rep PR

Although we don’t get to see him compete very often in recent times, it is still clear that Russel Orhii is among the top powerlifters in the world. He’s always committed to his training, which is evident in his continued preparation for his upcoming professional events. Speaking of his upcoming appearance, Russel is clearly pumped up and ready to compete, as he recently achieved a new personal best by squatting 337.5 kilograms (744 pounds) for two reps. Proud of his new achievement, Russel shared the video footage on his Instagram page.
The squat has always been Russel Orhii’s greatest and most favorite event in powerlifting. One of Russel’s biggest strengths is his incredibly strong and functional legs, which enable him to lift weights that are almost 4x his own body weight. So, due to these hard-earned attributes, Russel managed to squat 337.5 kilograms (744 pounds) for two reps in a raw manner. He only utilized a lifting belt and knee sleeves.
Russel Orhii’s first rep with the 337.5 kilograms (744 pounds) looked amazing. He did not display any signs of struggle or waste any excess energy. It was only in the second rep that Russel encountered difficulties, but he passed with a smile, showing confidence in his ability to lift the weight.
“744lbs/337.5kg for 2I done got me a lil motion..My next meet is gonna go crazy”

The last time that Russel Orhii competed was in December 2022, meaning that a significant amount of time has passed since. However, that also means that he has had a lot of time to improve, which is evident in his new two-rep squat PR.
Having also focused on bodybuilding during 2022, Russel Orhii has managed to put on some muscle. So, he also jumped up in bodyweight and thus competed in the 90-kilogram weight class at the 2022 USAPL Korea Winter Showdown. However, his current bodyweight is not clear, as Russel’s plans for the future were not revealed.

It appears that Russell Orhii has been setting new personal records almost every week for the past few months. Also, his physique looks better than ever, which illustrates just how hard he is working to accomplish everything he has set his sights on. It is paying off, as new PRs like the 337.5-kilogram (744-pound) squat will keep coming.

Rudy Kadlub Lands 524-lb Raw Deadlift Two-Rep PR On His 74th Birthday

Rudy Kadlub Lands 524-lb Raw Deadlift Two-Rep PR On His 74th Birthday

Rudy Kadlub’s birthday is a big deal for powerlifting fans all around the world. His celebrations have turned into a cherished tradition for him and everyone eagerly awaits the event. The most exciting part of his birthday festivities is when he performs his customary deadlift. This year he lifted one pound more than the year before. It’s an incredible feat that always leaves everyone impressed and in awe of his strength. Last year, Rudy Kadlub lifted an impressive 523 pounds (237.2 kilograms) for his birthday deadlift. This year, to surpass his record, he lifted 524 pounds (237.7 kilograms) to celebrate his 74th birthday. However, seeing that this represents his one-rep max, no one expected that Rudy would be able to complete two reps. Well, according to his Instagram, Rudy crushed both reps and landed a new two-rep PR as well.
Rudy Kadlub’s 74th birthday was on April 10th, 2023, but he had to postpone the deadlift attempt to April 27th, due to an illness earlier in the month. Despite the setbacks, Rudy was able to come in stronger than ever, surprising everyone in the gym and on Instagram.
Rudy Kadlub only equipped himself with a lifting belt and some chalk before coming up to the barbell. He then slowly found his perfect foot placement for the sumo stance and lifted the 524 pounds (237 kilograms) with ease. However, with multiple members of his team rooting for him, Rudy completed the second repetition under peer pressure.
“For my annual birthday tradition, I pulled 524# this year, 1 pound more than last. This year, the @kabukistrength team peer pressured me into doubling it, so not only is this a raw PR deadlift weight for me, but for 2 reps!”

Rudy Kadlub also stated that he might have to re-do his goals for next year, as it is evident that an increase of just one pound is nothing for him.
“If I can get stronger every year, by the time I am 90, I can do 700 pounds”
Rudy Kadlub already holds numerous Masters World Records in powerlifting, but it is now evident that he will further improve those records in the future. This is especially impressive, seeing that Rudy has been competing for 17 years. During that time, he took part in 40 sanctioned competitions and won 34 of them.
In addition, Rudy Kadlub has contributed to the powerlifting scene in other ways than competing. He is a co-founder of Kabuki Strength, a manufacturer of gym equipment, especially barbells.

Analyze Lifts

Apart from being an incredible powerlifter, Rudy Kadlub is one of the most inspirational figures in strength sports. His feats become even more impressive each year, especially during his birthday deadlift sessions. This year’s 524-pound (237.7-kilogram) two-rep raw deadlift is his greatest one yet, so the upcoming season could see Rudy break some more records as well.

Powerlifter Dan Bell Suffers Injury After a Massive 425-kg (937-lb) Raw Squat

Powerlifter Dan Bell Suffers Injury After a Massive 425-kg (937-lb) Raw Squat

This year was supposed to be a real delight for all powerlifting fans, as Dan Bell and Hafthor Bjornsson both had goals to set new World Records and battle against each other. However, the situation has quickly changed for the worse, as both men injured themselves. Dan’s injury is the more recent one, having suffered it at the 2023 USA-UA Pioneer on the Beach and revealed it just a few days ago on Instagram.
Dan Bell injured himself while performing a 425-kilogram (937-pound) squat on his third attempt. He got stuck in the middle of the lift, but somehow managed to push through. Although it looked like it was time to celebrate, Dan immediately showed signs of injury, barely being able to walk out of the squat rack.
“This one hurt. Felt like my left glute was getting torn in half then following the leg simply locked up and wouldn’t work. It was wild.”
Dan Bell tried to rest for some time in the hopes that his injury was just a small tweak of some sorts. However, after a few days it only got worse.
“Woke up Monday 4/17 unable to feel or move my toes. Absolutely wild a week after.”
However, Dan Bell took a positive approach to this, hoping to find out what the injury is and recover in the best way possible. After visiting two different hospitals, he finally found out the extent of his injuries.
“Moving forward with morphine and 2 different hospitals finding one of the largest MRI machines in Florida to find out my spine and 6 bulging discs have seen better days.”
Dan Bell’s recovery process has begun and he wants to avoid surgery if possible. However, his future is currently very uncertain.
“Already in the process of working things out and avoiding surgery at all costs… Got to be honest the future is up in the air. Just one day at a time.”

Dan Bell has experienced some injuries throughout his career, but he has always managed to come back better than he was. Thus, he built an incredible resume, appearing in 36 sanctioned competitions and winning 27 of them. Alongside that, Dan has claimed a number of World Records as well.

Any injuries around the spine are extremely risky and complicated. So, Dan Bell definitely needs to take his time and make sure that he is healed properly before coming back to the sport. Luckily, Bell is experienced enough to avoid making any mistakes, which should be good enough to see him back on the stage in the future.

Powerlifter Hunter Henderson Smashes 501-lb (227.2-kg) Raw Conventional Deadlift PR

Powerlifter Hunter Henderson Smashes 501-lb (227.2-kg) Raw Conventional Deadlift PR

Hunter Henderson is a highly inspiring and impressive personality in the fitness community, who has achieved great success in both powerlifting and bodybuilding. Despite having accomplished more than what most athletes can only dream of, Hunter Henderson still strives for more and seeks new challenges to achieve a sense of satisfaction. Recently, she managed to achieve just that by setting a new personal record in the conventional deadlift, crushing an incredible weight of 501 pounds (227.2 kilograms). This accomplishment has left her and her fans excited and motivated for what’s next to come.
Even Hunter Henderson has stated that the deadlift is her least proficient lift on a few occasions, but that only means that there is room for improvement. So, she is trying to switch things up and that includes transitioning from a sumo to a conventional stance. In addition, she has now deadlifted over 500 pounds (226.8 kilograms) with a conventional stance for the first time ever. So, Hunter was more than thrilled to share it on Instagram.
“My first time EVER pulling 500 conventional. This is so fucking cool for me? I tried a belt this week and just wore it pretty loose. It felt comfy!
It has been a long fucking time since a deadlift has excited me. Tonight was cool.”
Hunter Henderson’s new personal record (PR) of 501 pounds (227.2 kilograms) for a conventional deadlift was achieved without any assistance from supportive gear or equipment, making it a raw lift. She did, however, wear a lifting belt and used chalk to improve her grip. To reduce the range of motion and improve her balance, she also lifted without shoes. Holding onto the barbell during the lift can also be a challenge, but Hunter effectively utilized a mixed grip to complete the lift.

Hunter Henderson seems to be in her offseason currently, which might be why she is experimenting with the conventional stance on the deadlifts. She last competed at the 2023 WRPF Ghost Clash 2 two months ago. Hunter walked off with some competition PRs and a new U82.5KG All-Time Raw World Record Squat of 267.5 kilograms (589.7 pounds).
Hunter Henderson has been competing professionally in powerlifting since 2018. In these five years, she has racked up nine sanctioned performances and, very impressively, managed to win all of them. Alongside that, Hunter also scored multiple World Records.
Hunter Henderson’s Competition PRs

Squat: 267.5 kilograms (589.7 pounds) — (2023 WRPF The Ghost Clash 2)
Bench Press: 155 kilograms (341.7 pounds) — (2022 WRPF FQ Classic 2)
Deadlift: 260 kilograms (573.2 pounds) — (2021 WRPF Kern US Open)
Total: 670 kilograms (1,477.1 pounds) — (2023 WRPF The Ghost Clash 2)

Apart from her powerlifting achievements, Hunter Henderson is also a very impressive bodybuilder as well. Moreover, she even earned her IFBB Pro Card at the 2021 NPC USA Championship, and competed at one more competition after it, the 2021 IFBB Tampa Pro.

Crossing over to a conventional stance from sumo is definitely very difficult, but it certainly shows just how talented and strong Hunter Henderson is. It is also not clear if she will continue training in this way or if her goal was purely to set this 501-pound (227.2-kilogram) PR. Either way, Hunter will continue displaying her strength and impress the powerlifting fans.

USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Forced To Cease Doing Business in Minnesota After Transgender Policy Ruling

USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Forced To Cease Doing Business in Minnesota After Transgender Policy Ruling

The USA Powerlifting (USAPL) federation was recently involved in a court hearing about their transgender inclusion policy in the state of Minnesota. Having banned transgender athletes from competing in the women’s division, USAPL found themselves under a lot of pressure from the community. In addition, they lost the court case and were ordered to “cease and desist from the unfair discriminatory practice of barring transgender female athletes from competing with other women”. However, the sanctions for the USAPL federation just got even worse, as the organization was forced to stop doing business in the state of Minnesota as well.
USAPL revealed the new information through their website on April 15th. They revealed how they revised their transgender policy and submitted it to the court, but were still banned from doing business in Minnesota. However, they believe that the judge in charge of their case misinterpreted the law and made the wrong decision. So, they will submit an appeal, which they hope will correct the situation.
“As many of you know, USA Powerlifting is involved in litigation in Minnesota involving the appropriate and fair inclusion of transgender athletes. The judge assigned to this case has ordered us to cease doing business in Minnesota even though we complied with an earlier court order by submitting a revised policy concerning male to female transgender athletes. We believe the judge has misinterpreted Minnesota law in this regard and exceeded his authority in terms of the conduct of our service to our members. We will appeal this highly unusual ruling.”
However, despite their plans to submit an appeal, USAPL will still have to suspend their activities in Minnesota for now. This means that they can’t organize competitions, other events, or sell memberships.
“However, while these proceedings play out, we are ordered to suspend competitions in Minnesota and cease selling memberships to Minnesota residents. We are investigating relocating Midwest Regionals and further information will be forthcoming.”
Apart from the written statement, the USAPL’s president, Larry Maile, also released a statement explaining the organization’s beliefs, statistics, and the process.

JayCee Cooper was the athlete who filed a lawsuit against the USAPL in 2021, but only got to sigh with relief two years after. Cooper received an email in 2019 informing her that she could not participate in the women’s division of the USA Powerlifting (USAPL) federation. Following this, she decided to request protection under the Human Rights Act in order to address the issue of gender discrimination.
Transgender policies have proved to be sensitive in other federations as well. For example, in the Canadian Powerlifting Federation (CPU) anyone who states that they are a woman can compete in the women’s division. This recently resulted in an interesting situation, as Avi Silverberg, a man, entered the women’s division and broke the bench press record. Furthermore, the record which he broke was previously in possession of a transgender athlete, Anne Andres, who was present at the record-breaking performance as well.
Another federation whose transgender policies were faulty was the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA), whose rules of conduct at the time prohibited transgender athletes from competing in drug-tested competitions. Their reasoning was that hormone use was not permitted in competitions that were tested. Thus, trans people who required hormonal treatment would not be allowed to compete in these sorts of competitions.
The order to stop conducting business in Minnesota has affected the USAPL already, as they have to relocate the Central and Midwest Regionals to a different state. Based on USAPL’s stance on this matter, it seems that they will fight until the end. Therefore, the outcome of the situation remains to be seen.

Powerlifter Jamal Browner Crushes 435-kg (959-lb) Raw Conventional Deadlift PR In Training

Powerlifter Jamal Browner Crushes 435-kg (959-lb) Raw Conventional Deadlift PR In Training

Jamal Browner is a household name in the powerlifting community, mainly because of his mind-blowing deadlift abilities. With his mastery of the sumo stance, Jamal Browner is able to lift weights that are unfathomable to most people. However, many people also claim that sumo deadlifts are easier than conventional. So, these people also doubted Jamal’s strength. However, Jamal has decided to prove them wrong and go for a one-rep max conventional deadlift. This conventional deadlift came out to 435 kilograms (959 pounds), which is a new PR for Jamal.
Jamal Browner proudly shared his newest achievement on Instagram, silencing all the haters which can often be found in the comment section. To make it even more impressive, Jamal completed the lift in a raw manner, using only a lifting belt. The majority of people who are capable of lifting this much weight are unable to do it without the help of lifting straps. However, Jamal did not need them, as his grip strength is off the charts. This comes as a result of perfecting the hook grip through many years of powerlifting.
“Small Pr ?? but happy with how it moved!”

Apart from silencing the naysayers, Jamal Browner also has some other motivations to improve his conventional deadlift. He has been invited and accepted the invite for the 2023 Giants Live Deadlift World Championships. The competition belongs to a Strongman organization and will take place on September 2nd at the Cardiff International Arena, in Wales. It will feature the greatest deadlifters from the Strongman community, as well as Jamal Browner, who is much smaller and lighter compared to the other competitors.
The goal at the 2023 Giants Live Deadlift World Championships is to break the All-Time World Record, currently in possession of Hafthor Bjornsson. The 2018 WSM champion locked out 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds) in 2020. So, If Jamal is successful in doing so, he will receive a lucrative cash prize.
Jamal Browner is not neglecting his powerlifting career, but instead plans on achieving multiple goals at the same time. This year, he has not competed, but he may make an appearance in the near future. Overall, during his seven years as a professional powerlifter, Jamal took part in 16 sanctioned events, winning 11 of them.

Analyze Lifts

Jamal Browner will not be able to perform deadlifts with a sumo stance at the 2023 Giants Live Deadlift World Championships. However, he will have permission to use lifting straps and a deadlift suit, but that will be optional. It is not clear what his choice will be, but it is clear that when it comes to raw deadlifts, he is one of the best in the world.
