Watch: Bodybuilder Suffers Death After Snapping Neck Attempting Massive Squat
Working out can serve an array of functions, some of which include looking good and feeling strong. While many of us look forward to decompressing after a busy week of work, others train with a passion to push themselves in the gym. However, lifting heavy comes with its own set of risks and doesn’t always go according to plan even when a spotter is available. In sad news revealed by Bali Discovery, bodybuilder Justyn Vicky has passed away following a gruesome gym accident while squatting at a gym in Bali, Indonesia.
Training is encouraged for its wide-ranging health benefits. When you see results over time, achieving the pump can be an addictive and even enlightening process. Many of us like to test our limits with heavy weights, though it’s important to safeguard our bodies for the sake of injury prevention and longevity.
When it comes to taxing workouts, leg workouts are among the best. However, they come with risks. In Sep. 2021, powerlifting sensation Larry Wheels picked up a quad injury performing heavy squats on leg day.
Joseph Whittaker, a powerlifting veteran, had a close call squatting as well. He encountered problems trying to squat 400-kg (881.8-lb) in the training room. He appeared to struggle with the weight and rolled the barbell over his head to the front. Fortunately, his spotter jumped in quickly and helped him avoid a major injury.
Social media fitness influencer Bradley Martyn found himself on the wrong end of a gnarly gym accident last September. He was recording himself pressing a woman before she fell on his face. The fiasco resulted in Martyn needing a visit to the ER. He received 10 stitches inside his mouth.
Bodybuilder Dies of Neck Injuries after Gruesome Squat Blunder in Bali
Bodybuilder Justyn Vicky lost his life after suffering a horrific mishap in the gym in Bali, Indonesia. The 33-year-old was a popular figure in the local community and offered his expertise as a personal trainer and diet coach.
According to Bali Discovery, the incident took place at The Paradise Gym on Saturday morning, July 15. Vicky attempted to squat 180-kg (396.8-kg). He struggled to complete the exercise and fell to the front. The barbell rolled a bit forward on his shoulders, resulting in his neck and head snapping forward. Although he had a spotter behind him, it didn’t help. The spotter also didn’t appear to be in an ideal position to help with this accident.
Vicky was taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery and died shortly after from neck and spinal injuries. The cause of death is reportedly a broken neck.
Check out the video below:
YouTube star Darren Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, narrowly avoided injury on the bench press in a live stream earlier this year. He was stuck under the barbell while performing the exercise and had to slide the weight to one side to get out.
Bodybuilder Charles Griffen escaped a potentially serious chest injury while performing dumbbell bench presses three months ago. In the end, he suffered a torn pec and was sidelined for four to six weeks in recovery.
Deaths in bodybuilding have been all too common lately. Just in the span of a few months, three athletes have turned up dead. First, popular YouTube streamer Jo Lindner died at 30 years old. Then, Catalin Stefanescu passed away at 30 following a confusing boating trip where he drowned in a shallow river. Then, the community grieved the loss of prolific 2000s bodybuilder Gustavo Badell.

No matter how confident you may feel lifting on your own, it’s always a smart idea to have a spotter assist you when lifting heavy. Our prayers and condolences go out to the family and friends of Justyn Vicky.

Bodybuilding Veteran Gustavo ‘The Freakin Rican’ Badell Dead at 50, Community Reacts
It is with great sadness that we report the death of bodybuilding star Gustavo ‘The Freakin Rican’ Badell at age 50. At the time of this writing, his cause of death is uncertain, although RX Muscle’s Dave Palumbo and Nick Trigili suspect it was caused by a stroke.
“Gustavo battled with kidney issues for several years,” shared Dave Palumbo. “Whatever caused his death was something that was not expected.”
In 1997, Badell earned his Pro card at the Caribbean Championships and never looked back. He always brought great conditioning to the stage and was known for his detailed striations. En route to finding success, Badell received help from bodybuilding veteran Milos Sarcev, who currently coaches Mr. Olympia contender Samson Dauda and other top names.
As an IFBB Pro, Badell was a mainstay of the Open class during the 2000s. He took part in numerous Arnold Classic and Mr. Olympia competitions and pushed some of the world’s best such as Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, and Dexter Jackson. Every time Badell graced a stage he brought electric energy and built a legacy off the back of hard work.
Some of Gustavo’s best victories include the 2006 Ironman Pro Invitational, the 2006 San Francisco Pro Invitational, and the 2009 Atlantic City Pro. His final competition would come in 2012 at the Arnold Classic, where he finished 13th. Though, perhaps Badell’s biggest claim to fame was defeating Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler during the 2005 Mr. Olympia Challenge Rounds.
While Badell was a recipient of a kidney transplant, it remains unclear if that contributed to his sudden passing. It’s early to speculate, though some industry experts have done their best to explain what happened.
Bodybuilding Community Reacts to Tragic Passing of 50-Year-Old Gustavo Badell
According to Nick Trigili of Bodybuilding and BS, Badell was trying to bulk up again. He said he was unsure if Badell was using performance-enhancing drugs at the time of his passing. Trigili specified that the cause of death appears to be a stroke.
“Got an update on Gustavo Badell, it looks like he did have a kidney transplant several years ago, he had his sister’s kidney, and he was doing fine. It looks like he was trying to bulk back up again. I don’t know if he was using performance-enhancing drugs or not. It looks like they found him today, he had a stroke and passed away,” Nick Trigili revealed.
Details are limited, but Dave Palumbo of RX Muscle also mentioned that a stroke was the likely culprit.
“We lost another great one, Gustavo Badell, the ‘Freakin Rican’ one of the best bodybuilders of the early 2000s. His claim to fame, beating Ronnie Coleman in the challenge round. A round they used to hold at the Mr. Olympia competition where they would compare various poses and get judged by former Mr. Olympias like Lee Haney and Dorian Yates, Samir Bannout. Gustavo defeated Ronnie in that challenge round and that was during Ronnie’s reign when he was supremely dominant winning Olympias. In the challenge round if you picked the right poses to go against different competitors you could strategically win that round, and so, so did Gustavo. I think that was the last time they held it after that.”
“Gustavo’s motta was ‘I work hard.’ I interviewed him numerous times back in the day and he used to,always tell me that,” Dave Palumbo shared. “Prayers out to his family. This has got to be a really tough one. From what I hear, I’m hearing stroke as a cause of death. I don’t like to give cause of deaths without autopsy reports or definitive you know confirmations from doctors, but that’s what I’m hearing from people who are close to him. It’s not confirmed but I did hear stroke.”

30-Year-Old Bodybuilder Catalin Stefanescu Dies Mysteriously After Drowning In Shallow Lake
Romanian bodybuilder Catalin Stefanescu mysteriously passed away in a shallow lake while he was on a boating trip with a friend. According to Targoviste News, he was found submerged and lifeless in a 3-foot deep lake in Dambovita County, Romania, on Sunday.
Authorities found a 30-year-old man drowned in a lake in Lazuri, where he had gone fishing. While the ambulance quickly arrived, Catalin was pronounced dead at the scene. The police are conducting investigations to determine how the events unfolded.
Catalin Stefanescu was a Romanian bodybuilding talent who finished first in the 80-kilogram category at the National Fitness and Bodybuilding Championship. He was a Classic Bodybuilding competitor, who took part in shows in the over 180 cm category.

Police Issue Statement on Catalin Stefanescu’s Obscure Shallow Drowning
Representatives from the Dambovita County Police had the following to say about the incident:
“The police were notified by the administrator of a lake about a deceased person.”
“Upon arrival at the scene, the police found that a 30-year-old man, while fishing on a lake in Lazuri, had been found drowned.”
“Investigations are underway to establish precisely all the circumstances of the event,” the representative said.
In addition to his bodybuilding career, Stefanescu was a personal fitness trainer in Targoviste, the town he grew up in. His death is the latest to shake up a community that can’t seem to catch a break. Less than two weeks ago, popular bodybuilder/fitness influencer Jo “Joesthetics” Linder passed away at 30 years old. His girlfriend believes his death was caused by an aneurysm, but the autopsy results have yet to be made available.
Similar to this case, there is considerable curiosity and confusion as to how Jo Linder passed away. It was known that he suffered from Rippling Muscle Disease. However, some suspect that his use of performance-enhancing drugs contributed to his death.
Weeks before his passing, Linder appeared in a Raw Talk podcast with Bradley Martyn and shared his regret for having gotten four COVID-19 vaccine shots. He said doctors found ‘particles’ in his blood after the vaccines which prompted him to receive regular treatments of plasmapheresis.
The dangers of the sport have become a hot topic as of late. In 2021, former Mr. Olympia Shawn Rhoden and George Peterson both died from suspected heart complications. The trend continued last year as fans grieved over the passing of Cedric McMillan, who was only 44 years old.

Fitness Community Reacts to Jo Linder’s Mysterious Death at 30, Questions Raised About Cause of Death
The world of fitness and bodybuilding has been shattered by the devastating death of Jo Linder, known as “Joesthetics,” who succumbed to a fatal aneurysm at 30 years old, according to his girlfriend. The latest to make sense of this tragedy is Greg Doucette, a popular coach and former bodybuilder.
Linder, known for charm, charisma, and a shredded physique, amassed a social media empire over the last several years with an eccentric personality and fun collaborations with other influencers, such as powerlifting great Larry Wheels. He grew his Instagram following to a staggering 8.4 million and often inspired fans with workouts, where they could see first-hand the dedication he had to stay extremely fit.
Following his tragic death, fans have questioned if steroids and performance-enhancing drugs played a role in his demise. Linder has been open online about his steroid cycles in the past, as he went over his regimen in detail with Wheels last October. During the candid interview, Jo said growth hormone never helped him during his days of bodybuilding, but added that insulin was looked at like a ‘magic sauce.’
While an autopsy has yet to be completed, others have pointed to the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines as a possible culprit. These suspicions arose after Linder’s recent appearance on Bradley Martyn’s Raw Talk Podcast. Linder shared that he and doctors discovered ‘heavy metals,’ ‘particles,’ and clots in his blood, which led to him cleaning his blood with treatments of plasmapheresis.
“Did you get the vax?” asks Bradley Martyn.
“I got the vax yeah, yeah. Even four [of them]. It also, bro you know how it is… it’s the same like you go to a party and you hang with the wrong people all of a sudden you might do something on this party that you don’t want to do because there’s these people [nudging you], ‘You know, you should do it,”‘ said Jo Linder.
“I did blood cleaning twice after all this. I did plasmapheresis to take out heavy metals and all that stuff. I did all this. I don’t know if this is too controversial probably to say. I went to the doctor and I did my blood work again because I check my blood work all the time, I show it to the doctor and we kind of see these particles…I’m like what is this? This is from this [the vaccines]. I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ I show it to another one of my friends, there’s all kinds of websites you can’t get to and there’s some crazy conspiracies,” said Jo Linder.
According to Linder, a doctor told him that if he wanted to survive the vaccines he would need to undergo additional plasmapheresis treatments. Many have noted that Linder also suffered from rippling muscle disease, which he used to his benefit on social media. Meanwhile, other fans have suggested that his excessive coffee habit contributed to a heart attack from a caffeine overdose.
“The doctor was like you need to do it man if you want to survive after you took these shots, bro, that’s how it was actually,” said Linder. “I don’t know if the nurse did something weird. This was in Thailand obviously, when she took out the blood, there was a white thing in there. I’m like, ‘What the fu** is that?’ I’m like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ I show this to my friend, he’s into conspiracies.”
“He showed me all these websites, since they do this to people since so many, they found this in athletes and stuff and there’s a weird reason why people, they die, they have these wide blood clots, tons of them – in their blood – everywhere. He’s like, ‘Maybe this is what you have?’”
“There was no white thing, there was probably some air, the nurse didn’t do it right. But the [doctors], he’s said, ‘There’s some black particles, these are the heavy metals you have in your blood.’”
Community Reacts to Jo Linder’s Death at 30, Greg Doucette Discusses Tragedy and Explores Cause of Death
With the fitness and bodybuilding communities up-in-arms regarding Linder’s death, Greg Doucette took to a recent YouTube video to set the record straight. While some believe steroids could have been a factor, Greg says Jo stopped abusing PEDs and was only using hormone replacement therapy at the time of his death.
“Joe was very proactive with his health. Remember, he did in fact abuse PEDs when he was younger but he was only on HRT, and when he prepped for his various competitions, he hardly added anything to his cycle. I can promise you he was very concerned with his health, far more than the average person, was getting regular blood work and doing everything the right way.”
Doucette highlighted that autopsy details haven’t emerged and no one actually knows how Linder died.
“So because of that, many people are speculating that they know that the reason for Jo’s passing is because he did those four shots [COVID-19 vaccines and boosters]. Well, other people are speculating, no it has nothing to do with that, it absolutely has everything to do with that he was not 100% natural. Now remember, it’s only been a few days and an autopsy has not yet been performed. So people that are saying it’s a blood clot, that they know this for a fact, that it’s an aneurysm, that it’s a heart attack, nobody actually knows the exact answer,” said Doucette.
Following the tragedy, deaths in bodybuilding have been hurled back into the spotlight. Over the years, fans have taken notice of the risks as athletes like Shawn Rhoden, George Peterson, and Cedric McMillian all met their fates before turning 50 years old. The trend prompted retired IFBB Pro Seth Feroce to issue intense warnings about the dangers of steroid use last year.
Jo Linder’s passing has saddened the fitness and bodybuilding world, leaving behind many questions about the cause of his death. While some blame steroids, vaccines, or caffeine, it’s evident “Joesthetics” had a profound impact on those around him.

Powerlifting & Strongman Legend Don Reinhoudt Passes Away At 78
Strongman and powerlifting are now well-established sports, but it took them some time to reach this point. Just a few decades ago, these sports were in the development phase, with some incredible athletes pushing them onto the main scene. One of those was Don Reinhoudt who lured many fans into both sports with his incredible feats of strength. Tragically, Don has passed away at the age of 78-years-old.
The cause of Don Reinhoudt’s passing is currently unknown, but many powerlifting and Strongman athletes, like Ray Williams and Laurence “Big Loz” Shahlaei, have shared the news on Instagram, confirming that the unfortunate news is real.
“I was lucky enough to talk to Don a couple of times, and he was incredibly kind and a real gentleman with so many stories to share” wrote Big Loz.
“ I chased his records for most of my early lifting career. It is men like Don that made powerlifting the amazing sport it has grown into today,” wrote Ray Williams.

Don Reinhoudt’s Life and Career
Don Reinhoudt was born on March 5th, 1945, in Brocton, New York. He went on to have very successful teen years, becoming an All-League basketball player, an All-Western New York football player and an All-Western shot putter. In addition, Don was also a college football player, a part of the varsity track team, and also competed in Olympic Weightlifting. So, it is clear that Don was a man of many talents.
Powerlifting
Don Reinhoudt excelled the most in two sports, the first being powerlifting. He began powerlifting in 1969 and after some training, he made his debut at the 1972 AAU Men’s World Powerlifting Championships. He finished in third place, just behind his two idols, John Kuc and Jim Williams.
After that, Don Reinhoudt took part in eight more competitions and won all of them. Most notably, he won four consecutive IPF Men’s World Powerlifting Championships from 1973-1976.
Don Reinhoudt set dozens of National and World records during his time in powerlifting, some of which stood for multiple decades.
Strongman
After finishing his career in powerlifting, Don Reinhoudt’s incredible strength was recognized by Strongman organizers. So, he was invited to compete in the first-ever edition of the World’s Strongest Man competition in 1977. Having lost over 100 pounds of bodyweight just one year before, Don declined, but revealed that he would compete in 1978.
The year 1978 rolled around and so did the second edition of the WSM. So, Don took part in the competition and was leading the pack until the final event – the tug of war. Unluckily, he lost balance and ended up losing to Bruce Wilhelm, who also won the competition in 1977.
Don Reinhoudt remained determined and came back in 1979 to compete at the WSM once again. This time he ended up taking the title, becoming only the second man in history to hold the most prestigious calling in Strongman.

Even after wrapping up his official career in Strongman and Powerlifting, Don Reinhoudt continued impressing people with feats of strength like picking up people with his teeth, hammering nails in wooden boards with his bare hands, and more. So, with everything that Don has accomplished in his career, he will be an inspiration for generations to come.
Fitness Volt is expressing our condolences to the family and friends of Don Reinhoudt. May he rest in peace.

Quinn was a highly respected bodybuilder competing throughout the 1980s and 90s. He was also a trailblazer in many respects given his entertaining nature and charismatic attitude. Many believe the sport of bodybuilding has seen a rise in deaths recently. Ever since the passing of Shawn Rhoden in 2021, some worry that over-eating and drug use have become rampant, especially in the Men’s Open division. Last March, Cedric McMillan died at 44, which served as another wake-up call for the community. Bodybuilders have since spoken out against abusing steroids given the concerning trend.
In addition to those he touched personally, Mike Quinn was held in high regard for his intense training strategies. During his career, Quinn practiced short-duration high-intensity movements and utilized short rest periods. Quinn favored an array of exercises but often used barbell squats, bench presses, and overhead presses.

In one of the final updates before his death, details were shared about Graham’s health conditions on his GoFundMe page.

“The Osteomyelitis infection in his ears, skull and sinus cavity remains his greatest challenge. He’s on strong IV antibiotics 3 times a day to treat this and the infectious disease doctor says he will need to be on them for at least 3 more months. As a result of this infection, he is currently completely deaf. We’re praying this is temporary, and will resolve as the infection is treated. He has intermittently also suffered with kidney issues, and been on dialysis. This in addition to Billy having heart and lung concerns, sores from being in bed for 4 months and depression.”
Given his charismatic attitude and colorful personality, Graham had a hand in shaping many rising stars in the wrestling community. It’s evident he had a major impact on the sport and helped elevate WWE to the next level of mainstream.
