WATCH: Rob Kearney Takes On CrossFitters Mal O’Brien And Jake Marconi In Deadlift Challenge
Mat Fraser hosted an intense battle of strength between Rob Kearney and some elite CrossFit athletes.
The dynamics of strongman and CrossFit are extremely different and it is always interesting to see athletes go up against each other. In this instance, Rob Kearney took on CrossFitters Mal O’Brien and Jake Marconi.
Kearney has been busy competing in strongman fighting for some of the biggest prizes in the sport. O’Brien is coming off a year where she was named the 2021 CrossFit Rookie of the Year while Marconi continues to be an elite athlete. This contest was shown on Fraser’s YouTube page as the three athletes took on deadlifts for reps.
It is clear that Kearney has the largest deadlift of the group given his stance as a strongman. He deadlifted the day before this contest and completed four reps of 805 pounds. Completing many reps for time is not usually what he does during strongman contests.
“It depends on the contest. We have both a deadlift ladder working up to 880 and we’ll also have a deadlift for reps around 750. So typically, eight reps is the biggest I’ve done,” Kearney explained.
Deadlift Challenge
All athletes were tasked with completing the deadlifts and reloading their bars to the appropriate weight for the next lift.
385 pounds for 2 reps
365 pounds for 4 reps
335 pounds for 6 reps
315 pounds for 8 reps
255 pounds for 10 reps
195 pounds for 15 reps
“Rob deadlifted 805 for four reps yesterday. Rob clearly has astronomically high deadlift numbers so it’s kind of like a fun experiment. Jake has a 515 deadlift. Rob has a, best ever was 970. So close to double but I watched him do 805 for four reps yesterday and like, it was cardio,” fraser said.
“So let’s see how he does with way, way lower percentage for him but it’s something that is completely out of his element.”

Rob Kearney made the first bars look easy given the weight that was on the bar. Fraser said that these lifts were “about 38 percent” of what Kearney can put up. This was referring to Kearney’s max lift of 970 pounds.
As the contest went on, Mal O’Brien finished the workout ahead of both Kearney and Marconi. Once the workout was over, Kearney admitted to liking this method of deadlifting.
“I actually like doing touch-and-go. Like time under tension wise. I feel like it’s a lot more effective. I always get more fried doing dead-stop reps.”
O’Brien took home the victory in this workout ahead of her scheduled appearance at the 2022 CrossFit Games in Madison, WI from Aug. 3-7. Rob Kearney will continue to train in order to compete against some of the other elite competitors in the world.

Rob Kearney Appeared On “The Joe Rogan Experience” To Discuss Injury And Strongman
Rob Kearney provided his thoughts and some recent updates on one of the top podcasts.
The latest strongman to appear on The Joe Rogan Experience was Rob Kearney. The former Arnold Strongman Australia champion appeared on the top podcast to discuss a triceps injury he suffered during the World’s Ultimate Strongman “Feats of Strength” series. During the event, Kearney was attempting to break the American log lift record.
Kearney did some serious damage to his triceps and it was not fully revealed until it was time for him to have surgery to repair the injury. This led to the surgeons having to reconsider the steps they were going to take. The full interview can be found on the PowerfulJRE YouTube page.
“The MRI showed it was torn, but not to what extent. The doctor said it looked like a firecracker had gone off in my tendon,” Kearney explained.

It was not an easy fix for Rob Kearney. It took 14 sutures to reassemble the tendon to be attached by four anchors that were drilled into the elbow. There are few things that can keep a strength athlete out of the gym. For Kearney, he took two weeks off but quickly returned to train his lower body. During this time, he had to endure serious rehab to gain full range of motion. During the taping of the podcast, Kearney was still unable to extend his arm fully.
Rob Kearney was able to successfully make his return to competition last weekend during the 2021 Rogue Invitational. He still did not have full range of motion but was able to finish sixth out of 10 competitors in Round Rock, TX. This performance showed that Kearney will return to full strength soon. Even without full range of motion, he was able to make an impact against some of the other top strongmen in the world.
Joe Rogan has sustained one of the top podcasts in the Internet for quite some time. During his tenure, Rogan has featured some elite competitors in both strongman and bodybuilding. Kearney joined the likes of Ronnie Coleman, Robert Oberst, and Mat Fraser as athletes who have appeared on the show.
It was good to see Rob Kearney back in competition and it will only get more exciting as he continues to get healthy. The next time he steps on stage could produce some better results than in Texas.

Strongman Rob Kearney Has Been Diagnosed With Testicular Cancer, Undergoes Surgery
Rob Kearney has received some pretty upsetting news.
It appears that strongman Rob Kearney has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The strongman broke the news on his social media where he went in depth about his recent circumstances. Kearney also went on to reveal that he underwent surgery and now awaits test results.
Rob Kearney took to his Instagram to address his current situation.
Over the past couple of weeks I have been dealing with some health issues and just recently, I have been diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. I go in for surgery tomorrow to remove the testicle and will then know the type of cancer we are dealing with after the results come back from pathology.
The timing is unfortunate because I have been feeling so strong and healthy as of late and was so excited to get back to competing soon. This is just another obstacle to overcome and I never back down from a challenge!
I want to give THE BIGGEST shoutout to my husband @worlds_gayest_strongman for being the most supportive/loving/caring man in the world during this entire process. He literally is the best! To all of my family, friends and fans… thank you for the love and support and let’s come back stronger than ever!!!
This comes as truly shocking news. It’s unfortunate that Rob Kearney had to go through such a tough situation, but it’s certainly uplifting to see him in such a positive mood. Despite the diagnosis and despite the uphill battle, Kearney is ready to fight.
Surgery and Potential Diagnosis
In a follow up post, Rob Kearney revealed that he underwent surgery and is now awaiting the test results. Here’s a blurb of what he had to say about his surgery.
Out of surgery and feeling pretty good! Surgery went well, with no complications. Now the waiting game begins to get the sample back from pathology which will determine the next course of action.
Rob Kearney has established himself as one of the strongest humans on the planet. He along with Rhianon Lovelace were both considered the pound-for-pound strongest people on the planet.
The Generation Iron team sends well wishes to Rob Kearney. Hopefully the strongman will receive good news about his diagnosis.
