Santi Aragon Reveals The Worst Experience With Diuretics That Almost Hospitalized Him

Santi Aragon continues to speak out on just how prevalent diuretic use is in bodybuilding… and how consistently dangerous they can be.
It’s no secret that diuretics can be a powerful drug when done incorrectly. It’s also well known that diuretics are used by bodybuilders during contest prep for a show. While there are very few proven incidents with diuretics in bodybuilding leading to death or hospitalization – Santi Aragon believes this is a very dangerous aspect of bodybuilding and a serious health risk for individuals in the sport. That’s why after his retirement he has dedicated himself to speaking openly about the risks many avoid discussing in bodybuilding. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Santi Aragon details the worst experience he had using diuretics and how it nearly put him into the hospital.
After a quite tragic year for bodybuilding in 2021 due to many too-soon athlete deaths, the discussion about health has been highlighted in the sport. While many of these deaths are possibly coincidental – there have been those who have started speaking out about the often unspoken dangers in the sport. Perhaps these recent deaths are unconnected – but the event has spurred a bigger openness in bodybuilding.
The discussion of diuretics in bodybuilding is one aspect that has opened up in recent years. Many big names in the sport have spoken with Generation Iron – including Victor Martinez, Milos Sarcev, and even 8x Olympia legend Ronnie Coleman – on just how dangerous these drugs can be. Now we can also add Santi Aragon to that list.
Santi Aragon made headlines late last year when he announced he would be retiring from bodybuilding at only 33 years old. His reasons were not because of any injury or current health issue – but because he wanted to leave the sport before it started damaging his health long term. Since then – he has been extremely open about the dangers he’s learned about from being a career bodybuilder.
In terms of diuretics, Santi Aragon admits that he has countess stories he’s heard and experienced himself showcasing just how frequent these drugs are used – and how often they can lead to harm. While it may be a small percentage that end up in the hospital or dead – Santi claims there are many close calls that the public never learn about.
One close call was experienced by Santi Aragon himself. He described to us the worst experience using diuretics during his bodybuilding career. He was much younger, 22 years old, and was blindly following whatever his coach directed him to do during contest prep. He removed salt completely from his diet – only boiling his food – and cut down to an incredibly peeled and conditioned physique. To help further get shredded, Santi also took a diuretic.
Santi Aragon was completely dehydrated – but still not at the weight desired for the competition. So one night before the show, his coach advised him to load with food but no water. This brought salt back into his system without hydrating himself. At the same time, he was still being dehydrated from the diuretic he took as well.
By the time Santi Aragon stepped on stage for prejudging, he was lightheaded and seeing trailing cloudy lights. He was one inch away from passing out. He made it through prejudging – but then found his body overheating. Without any water in his system, he could cool down. He had to sit with his feet in buckets of ice water to regulate his temperature.
Ultimately, Santi Aragon recovered without major issue. But looking back, he realizes that he should have certainly went to the hospital. The situation could have gone far worse. He was lucky. And Santi believes this kind of story happens all the time in bodybuilding. The near-misses that never get publicized. He believes that the issue with diuretics is actually far worse than the public even realizes at this moment. That’s why he wants to speak out about it. It’s reasons like these that made him decide to retire early.

Santi Aragon: “There Is No Light On The Other Side” When You Push To Bodybuilding Extremes

Santi Aragon opens up about his retirement – claiming that the risks started to outweigh the rewards of bodybuilding.
Last month, bodybuilder Santi Aragon announced that he would be retiring from the sport. At only 33 years old, this was a very surprising statement. Many bodybuilders compete well into their 40s, and in some cases, 50s. More shocking was the reason. He did not suffer a major injury or have health issues. He wanted to leave at the top of his prime before long term damages rear their head. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Santi Aragon opens up about how the risks of steroid use and contest prep led to his retirement from bodybuilding.
Santi Aragon has been completely open and honest about steroids and other drug use in bodybuilding for quite some time now. Having built his own businesses and no longer sponsored by other brands – he felt free to speak openly without reflecting poorly on any of his obligations. So it comes as no surprise that Santi was very open and detailed while speaking with us about his reasons for retiring.
First things first, Santi Aragon doesn’t want anyone to think that he was against PEDs in the sport. He knew the risks going in and was willing to take them. He wasn’t naive to the reality that top level bodybuilding requires. That being said, as he got older, he felt the risks started outweighing the rewards.
On top of this, he was witnessing many deaths in the sport during the 2021. While he acknowledges that these deaths have no real link – he also understands that drug use in the sport can lead to long term health damages and even death. His very own trainer suffered through heart issues last year (good news: he recovered), which “really hit home” for Santi just how painful those kind of health situations can be.
While he didn’t confirm or state if the heart problems were in relation to steroids, the reality became clear. This is a risk of what can happen down the road from consistent steroid use. Santi Aragon has been on top of his health in recent years, with blood tests every three months, his heart and his blood pressure are all healthy. He wants to keep it that way for as long as possible. So he decided to retire.
But for Santi Aragon, it’s more than just the drugs that pose a risk. Santi believes the entire lifestyle required for top level pro bodybuilding is dangerous – especially rising to meet the higher weight requirements for the biggest divisions.
“It’s very difficult for a guy thats 5’5″ to carry over 200 pounds. At least for me,” Santi Aragon states in our interview. He continues:
“I’m not built to be 200 pounds. I’m a 175-180 max. But when I’m starting to push that 212, when I was trying to be 212, I had to force everything. I had to force training, I had to force food, I had to force drugs at such a high level that I could not see myself sustaining that for over a year… that reality sets in really fast. The drugs, the food, and you know – when you force yourself to do things like that and push your body to that extreme, there’s no light on the other side.”
Santi Aragon goes on to say that most bodybuilders don’t realize the reality of this until it’s too late. They are only aware just how far their health can be at risk once the long term effects start appearing. Santi didn’t want to be one of those people. That’s why he changed course.
And Santi Aragon also wants to point out that nothing is set in stone across the board. Much like cigarettes, some people can smoke their whole lives with no issues. Others can smoke for one year and get lung cancer. Genetics and random luck play a big part. It’s to each their own in how far an individual wants to push that risk.

With Santi Aragon Retiring at 33, Can We Expect More Athletes to Walk Away Early?
Santi Aragon retires from competitive bodybuilding.
Santi Aragon, 212 and Classic Physique veteran, has decided to retire at the age of 33. The bodybuilder sites that he wished to walk away on his own terms with his health intact.
Competing as a professional athlete can be quite the daunting thing. It can take a considerable toll on the physical body. Bodybuilding in particular can be especially taxing for the athletes. To push your body to the limit then cut down a tremendous amount of water weight and step on stage dried out and depleted can be truly challenging for the average person.
So when athletes state that they’re leaving competing behind it usually comes as no surprise. After all you can only stay in the game so long before it has diminishing returns…unless your name is Dexter Jackson that is. But it appears that the latest athlete to retire from the sport is doing so at a relatively young age.
212 and Classic Physique competitor Santi Aragon is walking away from competition. Aragon still at the height of his powers is choosing to call it quits at 33 years of age. The great news is that Aragon isn’t retiring due to health concerns. The bodybuilder made it clear that he’s walking away from the sport at a high point rather than going too long.
Leaving The Sport Behind
Santi Aragon wrote this message on his Instagram post addressing his retirement.
I am formally announcing my retirement from the bodybuilding stage. It’s been something that I have been wanting to do for the past year. I am walking away from the stage on my own terms and was not forced in anyway to do so. As time goes on, your priorities in life change. My priorities are my future, my health and my family. Bodybuilding was getting in the way of those 3 things which I hold dear to my heart. Bodybuilding has brought me so much joy the last 10 years. The people I’ve met, the places I’ve traveled to and all the life lessons I can take with me into the future. I am very grateful for the last 10 years and all of the people that were a part of it. Just because I’m retired from competing, does not mean I am disappearing from the fitness world. Your boy has to look peeled come summer time ? Love all you ❤️
While Santi Aragon may still be healthy and fit, there have been a string of bodybuilders who have passed away in recent years that is certainly raising some alarms. These deaths have certainly put many athletes on notice. At the end of the day all we have is our health and it appears that rather than push on for too long Aragon is choosing to walk away with his head held high and with all his faculties intact.
