Shaun Clarida Shares Big Chest And Triceps Workout
Shaun Clarida provides a workout ahead of the 2022 Olympia.
Shaun Clarida has started preparing for the 2022 Olympia — and for good reason. The former Olympia 212 champion earned qualification to the biggest event of the year after winning the 2021 Legion Sports Fest in the Open division. Now, Clarida is sharing some of his workouts to get in championship shape.
Clarida finished second to Derek Lunsford in this year’s Olympia. Many considered Clarida to be the favorite but he ended up with a silver medal. Following the event, Clarida announced that he would test himself in the Open division but would not be leaving 212. After a victory, it is clear that he can compete and will continue. Clarida has expressed interest in competing in both divisions during the Olympia but it is unknown if that is allowed. It is also unknown which division Clarida will be apart of.
The 2022 event in Las Vegas is exactly one year away. Many athletes have begun training and sharing some workouts. Shaun Clarida recently shared a massive chest and triceps workout to his YouTube page.
Clarida’s day began with a quick calf exercise. He explained that this was an area that needed to be improved and this is how he is beginning workouts. Clarida performed three sets of standing calf raises on a machine before getting into chest work.
Chest Workout
Hammer Strength Incline Press
Shaun Clarida began the workout with hammer strength incline press. He explained that this is one of the main exercises that he performs and even uses dumbbells on compound days. The machine will work muscles in a similar way. Clarida performs three sets totaling between 10-12 reps and finishes with a back-off set, which is usually 10-15 reps.
“For those who don’t know what the back-off set is, it’s when you finish your last heavy set, you do one more set. There, you increase the weight by, I think like, 16 percent of what you just did,” Clarida explained.
Incline Barbell Pin Press
This variation was attributed to Clarida’s late coach John Meadows. It is a more explosive version of an incline press. Clarida has been focusing on his upper chest area and this is a lift that can help. He performs two sets of 8-12 reps with progressive overload. Clarida likes to do upper chest early in the workout to get the best results possible.
Seated Chest Press Cable Machine
Shaun Clarida performed two sets of 8-12 reps on this machine before deciding to add a third. He was going to stop but admitted that this did not challenge him enough. Clarida added plates onto the machine weight and performed a third set. This provided the necessary pump before moving on.
Dips
Dips are an exercise that can work either chest or triceps — or both. When leaning forward, this exercise focuses on the chest muscles. This is what Clarida was looking for an completed a continuous set of 30 reps to failure.
Incline Chest Flyes Cable Machine
This was Shaun Clarida’s final chest workout of the day. He used D-handles because the diameter of the handle is smaller towards the thumb and gets wider. This is so the athlete can eliminate sing forearm strength for a firmer grip. Clarida performs two sets of 12-15 reps to finish his chest workout.
Triceps
Rope Pull-Downs
Pull downs are a great way to get the triceps going early in the workout and this is how Clarida began. He performed three sets of 8-15 reps. He explained that ropes provide extra movement and because of this, the triceps are hit harder. Clarida does not train arms on their own day in the offseason. He adds triceps to chest day and biceps to back.
Standing Overhead Dumbbell Extensions
Shaun Clarida finished his day with three sets of 8-12 reps with progressive overload. He said this was one of his favorite workouts for triceps because of the work that it does.
“You put more stress in the triceps in a straight position but also a really good contraction at the top.”

Talking Huge With Craig Golias | EP 18: Shaun Clarida & Flex Lewis’ Men’s Open Future
[embedded content]
Craig Golias reacts to Shaun Clarida’s Men’s Open win and debates about his potential in Men’s Open Olympia alongside Flex Lewis and Hadi Choopan.
Welcome to another episode of Talking Huge – a weekly digital series in which Craig Golias talks in-depth with Vlad Yudin on the latest trending topics in bodybuilding. Raw, honest, and uncut – Craig Golias shares his opinions on all things bodybuilding. In this episode, Craig Golias discusses the growing number of Men’s 212 athletes moving to Men’s Open including Shaun Clarida, Flex Lewis, and Hadi Choopan. He also talks thoughts on Only Fans and neck training.
The bodybuilding season might be coming to a close but there’s still a lot of exciting news coming out of the sport post Olympia. While the European Tour is no where near as momentous as it was in decades past, some interesting results have surfaced over the last few weeks. The biggest news was not simply Shaun Clarida winning a Men’s Open competition – but his announcement that he wants to try and compete in both Men’s 212 and Men’s Open Olympia next year.
This news alongside Hadi Choopan’s switch two years ago and the impending debut of Flex Lewis in Men’s Open is bringing a wave of Men’s 212 athletes into Men’s Open. How will it all turn out? Vlad Yudin connected with Craig Golias for a new episode of Talking Huge to discuss at length. Let’s jump into it.
Shaun Clarida’s Men’s Open Victory
At the Legion Sports Fest Pro 2021, Shaun Clarida turned heads by announcing he would compete in the Men’s Open division. This put him against the likes of Regan Grimes and Sergio Oliva Jr. Even more surprising were the results – Clarida beat out Grimes and Oliva Jr. for his first victory in Men’s Open. We asked Craig Golias his thoughts on the victory.
While Craig Golias congratulates Shaun Clarida for the victory – he doesn’t see this as a big change for Clarida’s career. In Craig’s opinion, Clarida wasn’t going up against the best of the best Men’s Open competitors. Craig also points out that Clarida isn’t just any Men’s 212 athlete – he’s the former Olympia champion. A Men’s 212 Olympia champion going against a lineup of non-Olympia champion Men’s Open competitors is very different than if Clarida was competing in the Men’s Open Mr. Olympia.
Of course, it seems that Shaun Clarida knows this as well. He’s already made a statement in a recent interview claiming that he’d like to try and compete in the Men’s Open Olympia. In his perfect world, he’d be allowed to compete in both Men’s 212 and Men’s Open. If and when that occurs, we’ll be sure to follow up with Craig Golias on his take.
The Bigger Picture: More Men’s 212 Athletes Move To Men’s Open
We also asked Craig Golias his opinion in the wider view regarding Men’s 212. Over the past few years, a handful of impressive Men’s 212 athletes have moved over into Men’s Open. Hadi Choopan has been competing in Men’s Open Olympia for three years and has made it into the top 5 each year. Flex Lewis has been preparing for his Men’s Open debut at Mr. Olympia – but has not yet competed due to personal circumstances. And now – Shaun Clarida looks to be making waves in Men’s Open.
Could this be a signal that size is starting to play less importance in Men’s Open? After decades of “mass monster” physiques reigning supreme, will aesthetics start edging out size as a deciding factor for victory? Craig Golias is excited to see what happens. He’s curious to see what Shaun Clarida can do in Men’s Open Olympia. He’s by far the shortest competitor in Men’s 212 to make the transition. Craig is most excited for Flex Lewis. He believes if any Men’s 212 competitor could move up and win Men’s Open Olympia – it would be Lewis.
Wrap Up
There are far more topics discussed in this episode than we can cover in this article. Craig Golias also discusses the world of Only Fans and if he would ever make an account. He also talks about neck training and gives an update on his nerve damage injury. You can check it all out in the latest episode of Talking Huge above! Shaun Clarida Looking To Compete In Both Men’s Open And 212 Olympia in 2022
Shaun Clarida could be pursuing two Olympia titles next year.
Heading into the 2021 Legion Sports Fest Pro, one of the big stories was Shaun Clarida preparing to make his debut in Men’s Open. The former 212 Olympia champion made the announcement in the week leading up to the competition. After a victory, Clarida wants to explore the opportunity of competing in two divisions during next year’s Olympia.
In a recent interview, Clarida discussed how he wants to use his qualification to the 2022 Olympia in both divisions. This would have to be approved before he was able to make it happen.
“I would absolutely love the opportunity to do that. I would love to talk to Jim (Manion), Tyler (Manion), Jake (Wood), whoever is in charge of making that decision, and hopefully they would allow me to do that. That would be amazing,” Clarida said.
“Obviously we’re going to be at the show regardless, but with the improvement’s we’re going to make this coming year, obviously the goal is to get my title back at 212, but I would love to really push myself and see what I can do in the Open Olympia this year. It’s definitely a decision that the higher ups are going to have to make, I’m going to respect whatever decision they decide to go with, but yeah if they allowed me the opportunity to do that, to cross over and to move, you bet your ass I’m gong to do that.”
Shaun Clarida continued by saying he was not sure which division he would choose if he was unable to compete in both. There are reasons for Clarida to choose either division and this will be the big question leading up to the show next year if he is unable to appear in both.
Clarida won the Olympia 212 back in 2020. He was the favorite coming into this year’s competition but finished second to Derek Lunsford. It seems obvious that Clarida would want to get his title back as soon as possible. On the other hand, competing in Men’s Open is the pinnacle of the sport and Clarida already showed that he can stack up.
When Clarida first made his announcement, he mentioned that it was not a permanent change and he did not plan to leave 212. Now that he has a competition victory in Men’s Open under his belt, it will be interesting to see if that notion changes.
The 2022 Olympia will take place in December of next year in Las Vegas. Clarida has earned his qualification and is planning to be present on stage. The question will remain, which division will he compete in?

Former 212 Olympia Champ Shaun Clarida To Compete In Men’s Open This Month
Shaun Clarida is prepared to venture into a new category of bodybuilding.
Shaun Clarida has been one of the top competitors in the Men’s 212 division for years now. After reaching the pinnacle of 212, Clarida announced that he will venture into a new world of bodybuilding and compete in Men’s Open later this month.
Clarida took to Instagram on Tuesday morning to make the announcement. He will appear on stage during the Legion Sports Fest in Reno, NV. This event will take place from Oct. 22-24 with some elite competitors scheduled to make an appearance.
“? SURPRISE SURPRISE!!?
They said I wasn’t a GIANT KILLER because I never competed in the open, well, ask and you shall receive! #ChallengeAccepted“
Shaun Clarida is coming off a second-place finish at the 2021 Olympia in the 212 division. This comes one year after his championship during the 2020 competition. Clarida has finished in the top three in each of the last three years. This year, Derek Lunsford was able to get over the hump and defeat Clarida in the Olympia.
Clarida acknowledges the challenge that competing in Men’s Open will be and this is something that drew him to the competition. He wants to prove that he can hang with some of the biggest athletes in the sport. While addressing his intention to compete in Men’s Open later this month, Clarida made it clear that he is not leaving the 212 division.
“*It’s always been my plan to do an open show to give myself a new challenge and ultimately just have fun. I’ve always said timing is everything, so after placing 2nd at the Olympia, already being in shape and having absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain, this is a great opportunity to show that I’m not just a good 212 bodybuilder but a good bodybuilder period!,” Shaun clarida wrote.
(P.S I’m NOT leaving the 212 Division)”
In his Instagram post, Clarida shared the list of competitors scheduled to compete at the Legion Sports Fest. Cedric McMillan and Patrick Moore are on the list and will give Clarida immediate competition. Regan Grimes is also set to appear along with Maxx Charles. The list continues with the likes of Sergio Oliva Jr., who continues to be one of the best posers in the game.
After looking at the list of competitors, there is no doubt that Clarida will be challenged. This is something that the New Jersey native is looking for.
Clarida competed in his first Olympia 212 back in 2015. He has not missed one since that night and it seems like he will continue to be a force in the division moving forward. This venture into Men’s Open will only continue to strengthen Clarida’s game and his physique.
Shaun Clarida will look to prove that he can hang with the big boys in Men’s Open. This will be an event to watch to see how the 212 competitor matches up.

Melle Mel: Shaun Clarida Had A Better Physique Than Big Ramy At Olympia 2020
Melle Mel explains why he believes Shaun Clarida was the best bodybuilder of the entire night at Olympia 2020.
Melle Mel previously stated in one of our interview segments that the quality of the Men’s Open bodybuilders were impressive but not ideal. By that he means that there was no Ronnie Coleman, Phil Heath, or Dorian Yates type of brilliance on display. In his mind, Big Ramy was no better than anyone in the top 10 at Olympia 2020. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Melle Mel goes a step further. He believes that Men’s 212 champion Shaun Clarida had a better physique than Big Ramy and anyone else on the Men’s Open stage.
Melle Mel loves bodybuilding but he falls into the camp of people who think Men’s Open has become too bloated with size. While he does enjoy the freak factor, he laments the loss of beauty in more conditioned and aesthetic physiques. Which is why he was happy for the creation of Classic Physique.
Somewhat ironically, it wasn’t the Classic Physique Olympia 2020 champion that stood out to him this past year. It was the Men’s 212 champion – Shaun Clarida. Known for his small height, Clarida was a Men’s 212 bodybuilder that often got overlooked. He proved the world that they should start paying attention with a truly career defining physique at Olympia 2020. He won and became champion.
Melle Mel believes that Shaun Clarida is the ideal phyisque that bodybuilders should all aspire towards. He goes as far to claim that if Clarida stood on stage next to Big Ramy – that Clarida would have won the Mr. Olympia overall. That’s how much Melle Mel was impressed by Clarida’s physique.

Of course, the sheer height and size difference would be a challenge for Clarida to overcome. But Melle Mel believes that size should not always matter. Bigger is not always better. He believes that Clarida should be able to stand side by side with Big Ramy – and fans and judges should be able to award Clarida victory regardless of his smaller size.
“Now had he stood beside Big Ramy, I guarantee you he would look better than Big Ramy,” Melle Mel states in our interview. He goes on, “He just wouldn’t be bigger. So you would probably overlook him. Absolutely he was in better conditioning than Big Ramy.”
The point Melle Mel seems to be making here is that it’s natural for us to overlook smaller stature people. Even if Clarida held a better conditioned physique – it would be less noticeable when an elephant is standing next to him. That being said, if it was possible to really let the crowd evaluate each of them honestly – Melle Mel thinks it’s clear that Clarida was superior in every single way.
There was a time in bodybuilding’s younger era, where the lightweight and heavyweight bodybuilders would ultimately battle on stage side by side for an overall winner. That has disappeared with the removal of traditional weight classes and the creation of divisions. Perhaps one day the IFBB and NPC can open up special crossover categories.
Imagine the Mr. Olympia standing next to the Men’s 212 Olympia and so on. Would it always be guaranteed that the Men’s Open competitor wins? Or would we have some surprise upsets? Melle Mel wants to believe that someone like Clarida can win overall – but we’ll never know unless these sort of crossover events are allowed to happen.
You can watch Melle Mel’s full comments on Shaun Clarida and Big Ramy in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above!
