Hardcore Truth: Johnnie O. Jackson Responds To Negative Reactions Of His Near-Death Story
[embedded content]
Johnnie O. Jackson clears the air regarding negative criticism he received on the details of his near-death experience video.
Towards the beginning of March 2022, Johnnie O. Jackson released an episode of Hardcore Truth discussing his past PED use habits in bodybuilding and a near-death experience during contest prep. Shortly after posting the episode, Jackson faced negative criticism for how he explained the story and the details behind the specifics of his PED use. Admittedly, discussing PED use specifics can be a slippery slope in terms of how this kind of information is absorbed by the public. The last thing Jackson wants to do is mislead fans in the bodybuilding. That’s why on this week’s episode of Hardcore Truth, Johnnie O. Jackson responds to the negative reactions to his near-death story.
Johnnie O. Jackson decided to speak transparently about his past PED use and a near-death experience he had during contest prep. He decided to speak on this in reaction to the tragic deaths bodybuilding has faced over the past year. While we might not know the direct causes of many of those who passed away – there has been an increased discussion on health in bodybuilding.
Johnnie O. Jackson is not a doctor nor is he an expert on discussing powerful PED substances such as steroids, diuretics, etc. He wanted to share his story not as an explanation of what you should or shouldn’t do with PEDs. Rather, he wanted to simply relay the very real health risk he faced at various moments (and one moment in particular) during his prime bodybuilding years.
Generation Iron Fitness Network has always focused on providing a platform for its hosts to speak freely without censorship and oversight. Hardcore Truth, like many other video podcasts and series on our network, is hosted and distributed by GI but allows for hosts like Johnnie O. Jackson to speak unedited.
That being said, both Johnnie O. Jackson and Generation Iron understand that Jackson’s recent near-death story episode earned some negative criticism in the industry. That’s why Jackson wanted to do a follow up video to help clarify his statements and respond to the negative criticism.
Johnnie O. Jackson’s response to negative criticism
In this episode, Jackson first clarifies that his story is not meant to be direct advice about any specific drug or protocol. He is not a doctor, and he understands that he may have not explained his situation in as much detail as a medical professional could. Jackson’s story is not advice on do’s and don’ts about drugs. It was advice about the bigger picture of health risks in bodybuilding. He explains it was a story to help warn others on how easy the drive to succeed can overpower smart thinking when it comes to health.
And most importantly, he urges viewers to always second guess what is being put into your body and don’t just blindly follow trainers or coaches – including himself. Seek a professional opinion. Do research. Know what you are getting yourself into.
Johnnie O. Jackson then brings on a video clip from a medical professional to help further explain some details on his previous statements. Dawn Thornhill is a nurse practitioner – but more than that she was the specific medical professional that was overseeing Jackson’s protocols from his previous story.
In the clip, Thornhill focuses specifically on Johnnie O. Jackson’s comments about testosterone, high blood pressure, and how it affects African Americans. She pulls on her professional experience to help clear the air and clarify in more detail on Jackson’s previous statements on the matter.
Ultimately, Johnnie O. Jackson understands that criticism is simply a part of being a public figure. He also understands that others are entitled to their reactions and opinions just as much as himself. He hopes that today’s episode helps bring clarity and more context to the situation.
You can watch Johnnie O. Jackson go into complete detail alongside Dawn Thornhill in our latest episode of Hardcore Truth above. Make sure to stick around every Thursday for new episodes!
Straight Facts: Understanding SARMs – Are They Safe? What Are The Real Risks?
[embedded content]
Jerry Brainum shares the straight facts about SARMs and the common misconceptions perpetuated around the unapproved substance.
There used to be a time when bodybuilding and pro sports were only associated with one key performance enhancing drug – steroids. Those days are gone. We now have athletes that use a wide array of PEDs. One of those is selective androgen receptor modulators – also known commonly as SARMs. This substance is often billed as providing the benefits of steroids without the side effects. But is that too good to be true? In our latest episode of Straight Facts, Jerry Brainum explains everything you need to know about SARMs including the risks and misconceptions behind the relatively new substance.
SARMs (selective androgen receptor modulators) are less commonly known to the mainstream public in comparison to steroids. They are also not as strictly illegal as steroids are for athletic use. At least, when you get down to the fine print of it all. But SARMs are still a very powerful drug with a big grey area surrounding them in terms of health and safety. In fact, despite appearing safer, there are currently no SARMs approved by the FDA in the United States. So it is impossible to get a legal SARM product as a consumer.
Jerry Brainum understands that athletes such as bodybuilders are always going to take risks. He is not going to tell you what drugs you should or shouldn’t take. But he does feel a responsibility to help inform the public about the facts behind these substances. Far too often, a bodybuilder or athlete will take a substance like SARMs without realizing exactly what is being put in their body.
What are SARMs?
Simply put, Jerry Brainum explains that SARMs are a substance that directly affects the androgen receptors in your body. The invention of selective androgen receptor modulators was to find a solution to the side effects caused by steroids. Of course, we aren’t talking about this in regards to performance enhancement. Scientists were trying to find a solution to legally prescribed steroids for patients who suffer unfortunate side effects.
Eventually these studies and experiments led to the creation of SARMs as we know them today. It’s part of the reason they are promoted as having the power of steroids without the side effects. However, this is somewhat misleading. Due to the fact that SARMs were never approved by the FDA – there is a big grey area as to how these substances really affect the human body.
The side effects of SARMs: Are they safe?
The frustrating reality about SARMs is that there are not many extensive studies on these substances. Much like steroids or marijuana – it’s unapproved status puts limits on what scientists can do when it comes to clear cut studies. However, there are some points to consider and some case studies that can be referred to for insight.
Jerry Brainum starts off by explaining the inherent dangers of buying SARMs come from the fact you cannot buy them legally in the United States. This means that any SARM you buy online will be made on the black market. These labs do not have to hold themselves accountable to the standards set by the FDA. This means you don’t really know what you are getting in the product.
Jerry Brainum cites a study that purchased 20-25 different SARM products. They then studied the contents of each drug to determine the validity of the substance. In the end, it turned out that 50% of the substances purchased were either contaminated (or cut) with alternate substances. Some of the substances were even completely different drugs and contained no SARMs at all within them.
This is a massive risk. Much like other illegal designer drugs such as ecstasy, heroine, etc – buying a drug like SARMs via illegal means can lead to unintended consequences. Best case scenario you get a weaker or inert version of the SARM. Worst case you get something poisonous in your system that harms your health or is even lethal.
What makes this even worse is that many companies that are illegally selling SARMs online advertise themselves as a safe alternative to steroids. Not only is this inherently not true due to the black market nature of buying them – but there are some case studies that suggest that even pure SARMs are not as safe as advertised.
Jerry Brainum details another case study that mentioned potential side effects, including effects on the heart, that seem to be tied to SARMs. Again, there are less than ideal long term studies done to truly prove this. But a case study acts as a “what if” scenario. Perhaps not everyone will face side effects from SARMs – but it’s possible due to the information revealed in these case studies.
Just like you want to do research on a car before you buy it – SARMs need more rigorous research before they can be confidently proclaimed safe.
Wrap Up
Jerry Brainum goes into far more detail about SARMs, including scientific definitions and further breakdowns of case studies. Far more information than we can cover here in this article. So make sure to check out the latest episode of Straight Facts above – and decide for yourself if SARMs are a risk you want to take.
Bodybuilding Promoter Chris Minnes: How Prize Money Is Determined… And How It Can Be Raised
[embedded content]
Bodybuilding promoter Chris Minnes goes into transparent detail about how bodybuilding prize money is determined and ways in which the sport can raise higher payouts.
Bodybuilding competitions, the athletes who compete in them, and the fans who attend them are the lifeblood of the growing sport. But many believe that the sport will hit a plateau in growth and popularity if the prize money cannot be raised to higher amounts. While passion is an important factor for athletes who compete in bodybuilding – prize money is what allows these competitors to become career athletes. So what can be done to increase total prize money and help further grow the sport? In our latest GI Exclusive, bodybuilding promoter Chris Minnes explains how prize money works and what can be done to increase it.
Prize money for big events such as the Mr. Olympia and Arnold Classic often catch a lot of attention due to their big payouts. However, only one bodybuilder can earn first place, and the big cash prize, per year. Beyond these two pinnacle shows, the remaining pro shows offer relatively much lower amounts. Unlike other team pro sports like Football, Baseball, or Basketball – bodybuilders do not get paid simply for being pros and competing. They have to win.
This causes most pro bodybuilders to find other sources of income – as prize money alone cannot support their careers. While there is a successful infrastructure of entrepreneurial spirit and sponsorships – some believe that the sport needs bigger cash prizes in order to further grow into the next step. This, of course, is easier said than done. That’s why we turned to Chris Minnes, a successful bodybuilding promoter, to help explain the prize money process.
Everything you need to know about bodybuilding prize money
Chris Minnes starst off by explaining the NPC and IFBB Pro leagues have a minimum required cash purse. Most starting NPC and Pro shows will start at this minimum amount as they attempt to build more attention in order to grow the competition in the future. Running a bodybuilding competition comes with costs beyond running the event including registration fees to the league in order to legally put on the show.
So how do bodybuilding shows get past the prize money minimum while also still making a profit? Chris Minnes explains the next go-to decision is to bring in sponsors to help allow for higher cash prizes. But as Minnes further explains – even high level sponsorships cannot cover the cost of a big bodybuilding prize similar to what you’d see at the Mr. Olympia. So if sponsorships aren’t enough – what can be done?
Luckily the rise of the internet has allowed for much more direct advertising of a bodybuilding show. And most recently, PPV live streaming is finally getting a foothold on competitive bodybuilding – with even mid-tier shows being able to somewhat easily set up a stream. This opens up the possible ticket sales astronomically in theory. No longer is a local NPC or IFBB Pro show limited by it’s location. It can be seen across the world.
Yet the technological ability is only one part of the equation. Promoters still need to get people interested in large enough droves to bring in bigger revenue for bigger prize money. With so many competitions each year – getting to stand out for a more local show can be challenging.
This, Chris Minnes argues, is where the power of the athletes is vastly important. Minnes believes that athletes need to promote the events they compete in far more and far earlier to help drive sales. This just isn’t a plea for free advertising to make Minnes more money. It’s to make the competition earn more money so he can then raise the quality of the show and raise the prize money. Minnes believes that athletes, with their own online followings, can help directly improve their own profits by helping to promote shows.
Lastly, Chris Minnes also talks about how piracy is becoming an increased problem in the era of live streaming PPV events. Bodybuilding promoters do not have the massive network on the same level as a UFC PPV event – so it cannot obtain the same kind of security to stop illegal free streams. Minnes claims that he has seen pirated streams of his shows garner tens of thousands of views. In his mind – that’s the fans directly stealing prize money from the athletes.
There are a lot of hurdles to overcome – and many can perhaps be consider growing pains as the sport evolves alongside new technological options. You can watch Chris Minnes talk about it in full and refreshing transparent detail in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above.
Jim Stoppani: Keto Diet Vs Carb Cycling, Which Is Best?
[embedded content]
Jim Stoppani breaks down the keto diet and carb cycling in his latest explainer.
The keto diet is one of the more popular diet trends circulating through the fitness world over the past decade. The basic concept is to cut all carbs out of your diet and increase dietary fat. But is this popular trend all it’s cracked up to be? And how does it compare to the tried and true method of carb cycling often used by athletes? We partnered with Barbend and turned to exercise physiologist Jim Stoppani for a full explainer guide on keto diet vs carb cycling – and the overall role of carbs in nutrition for those looking to be fit and healthy.
In the current internet age, it’s become so much easier to get information to stay healthy and find ways to lose weight. But it’s also very easy for misinformation to spread and popular trends to take hold that might not be the best for you. That’s why it’s important to treat every super popular diet trend with caution. People have been singing the keto diet praises for years. And in fact, it holds a lot of similarities to older diet systems like the Atkins diet. But for those who want to handle fitness and health the right way – is this diet truly a good option?
Jim Stoppani breaks the diet down in our latest video conversation and also compares it to carb cycling – the act of cycling in and out of low and regular carb intake. What is the truly best way to handle carbohydrates in a fit diet? Let’s break it down.
What is the keto diet?
Jim Stoppani explains that the keto diet’s main factor is to cut carbs out of your diet completely. You then focus on an increase in dietary fats (the healthy ones). The goal of this is to rewire the way your body works. Instead of getting energy from glucose (carbs), your body will start pulling that energy from ketones.
Ketones are found in fat – and so when your body starts using ketones for energy, you start burning fat much more effectively. This is why the diet has become so popular. It’s a powerful method of losing weight fast (if you stick to it firmly).
Fun note – when your body is in ketosis and burning ketones/fat rather than glucose/carbs, you’ll find that your breath smells bad and in some extreme cases your sweat will also start to take on a different smell.
Should you use the keto diet?
While the results are proven to lead to relatively quick fat loss, Jim Stoppani warns against this diet being a go-to for those looking for long term fitness and health. Stoppani explains that the keto diet is great for a quick weight loss over the course of four to six weeks. So for those looking to fit into a wedding dress or look good on the beach during vacation, this diet can work wonders.
But for those who are looking to lose weight, keep the weight off, and remain health and fit – this diet is not the best option. Jim Stoppani explains:
“The last thing you want to do is go from eating 400 carbs a day to zero… and really that’s why keto is so popular because it’s used for short term fat loss. It’s great for losing a tone of weight in six weeks. But now that you’ve cut out all your carbs and now you hit a plateau, where do you go? You’ve got no more carbs to cut out. What are you going to cut out? Protein? You’re going to start cutting protein now?”
His main point is that the keto diet doesn’t work in the long term – especially for those who have more ambitious fitness goals like bodybuilders or athletes. That’s why Jim Stoppani recommends slowly cutting out carbs in phases.
Focus on cutting only 100 carbs first, you’ll lose weight if you do it right. Then after that plateaus, cut out another 100 carbs. If the keto diet focus on a slow transition out of carbs it would be more sustainable.
So what about carb cycling?
Jim Stoppani far prefers the tried and true carb cycling method for cutting weight. He’s used it in the past for years and finds it very effective. The key goal here is to cycle on and off with low carb days and then high carb days. There are various ways you can set up this schedule to work best for you.
The reason for the cycling is to prevent your metabolism from crashing. Suddenly cutting carbs will eventually lead to a plateau as your metabolism goes into a sort of “starvation mode” – suddenly you burn less calories at rest than before. This makes it harder to lose weight after a short term period of quick fat loss.
Carb cycling prevents this – while still cutting down overall carbs in your diet. It keeps your metabolism working faster while also cutting out glucos and focusing on burning fat instead.
Wrap Up
In Jim Stoppani’s eyes, the keto diet is no different than any other “lose fat fast” plans. They work great in the short term but likely lead to fluctuating weight in most people who try it. It’s hardly sustainable and not a long term solution. Carb cycling can be a great alternative for those looking to reduce carbs and burn fat. In either case – Jim Stoppani’s suggestion is to ease out of carbs instead of crashing down to zero instantly.

The Anabolic Doc Explains ‘Injection For An Erection’
[embedded content]
Dr. Thomas O’Connor, aka The Anabolic Doc, discusses the concept of ‘ejection for an erection’ and the complexity of erectile dysfunction for bodybuilders.
One of the most common steroid stereotypes is that, over time, erections become harder to obtain without continued steroid usage. Combine this with the popular stereotype that all bodybuilders are “roid rage” steroid users – and you have a mainstream audience that believes bodybuilders have a higher chance of sex issues. While this assumption is likely blown out of proportion – it’s true that long term steroid users can have issues due to lack of testosterone. One that The Anabolic doc has discussed with us previously. Enter the concept of ‘injection for an erection.’
The phrase ‘injection for an erection’ is a causal insider way of explaining certain prescribed drugs that can be injected into the body for an instant erection. This is different from traditional drugs like Viagra. Quite literally, it provides an almost instant erection regardless of whether or not you are even remotely turned on. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, The Anabolic Doc explains in detail how ‘injection for an erection’ works. He also details how erectile dysfunction is often much more complicated than people realize.
The biggest misconception, The Anabolic Doc explains, is that ‘injection for an erection’ is often used by bodybuilders and steroid users after they come off drugs. This isn’t the case. In fact, its very often not the case for bodybuilders post-steroids. These sorts of injections are usually prescribed and are a last case option for those who struggle with erectile dysfunction. After other more common drugs like Viagra and also therapy have not been able to provide relief.
The Anabolic Doc explains that people often focus on blood flow when it comes to erections during sex. This is where drugs like Viagra come into play. Some individuals may have a disorder that makes it harder for blood flow to properly pump to the penis when aroused. So drugs like Viagra often help with this fact. This can also help for those who may have slight mental blocks when it comes to sex. For example, those who have anxiety before having sex or perhaps put too much pressure on the act – causing erectile dysfunction.
But there is another component to erections and arousal that is less discussed. This is the direct brain signals going to the penis – telling you to be aroused. As we mentioned a moment ago, some may mentally block themselves from arousal due to anxiety or stress. But if you take it a step further towards clinical depression, or perhaps brain damage, or even nerve damage in the body – this can have big effects on arousal and erections as well.
The Anabolic Doc explains that this is were ‘injection for an erection’ comes into play. This is ultimately not ideal, but is the last resort for those who found no relief via other methods. Some of these injections are even inserted directly into the penis. These drugs, quite literally, provide an instant erection.
So the main point that The Anabolic Doc wants to stress here is that ‘injection for an erection’ is not a widely used tactic by long term steroid users. It’s a misconception to assume that this is purely a bodybuilder technique. It’s phrase and the shocking nature of the drug seem to turn heads – and help the concept go more viral online in certain circles. However, it is a very real and often troubling path that some individuals have to take. Those who are suffering after years of struggling.

Hardcore Truth: Johnnie O. Jackson Reviews The Arnold Classic 2022
[embedded content]
Johnnie O. Jackson shares his analysis and opinion on the top six Men’s Open placings at the Arnold Classic 2022.
This past weekend held the Arnold Classic 2022, it was an exciting event that returned to its normal full form after two years of shortcomings due to the global pandemic. The event is considered to be the second biggest competition of the bodybuilding season, second only to the Mr. Olympia itself. So of course, a bodybuilding show of this size is not without its controversies – with many debating whether William Bonac or Brandon Curry should have won first place. In this week’s episode of Hardcore Truth, Johnnie O. Jackson gives his analysis and opinions on the top six placings at the Arnold Classic 2022.
Seven divisions battled it out over the weekend at the Arnold Classic, bringing together some of the most talented athletes currently competing. When the results were announced on Saturday night, there was a mixture of excitement, respect, and controversy. The most hotly debated topic was about the battle of Brandon Curry and William Bonac. Many believed that Bonac should have taken the top spot. Regardless of outcome, these two competitors were extremely close in physique quality and performance. When a battle comes neck and neck as we reach the finish line – controversy always ensues.
That’s why Johnnie O. Jackson decided to put his opinion into the ring and break down his thoughts on the top six placings during the Arnold Classic 2022 finals. Let’s jump into his thoughts below.
Johnnie O. Jackson’s breakdown of the Arnold Classic 2022 Top Six Placings
First Johnnie O. Jackson puts his focus on sixth place finisher Brett Wilkin. Wilkin went into the Arnold Classic with a lot of hype this year due to some promising physique updates on social media entering the show. Ultimately, for fans expecting a massive top 3 finish, there was a bit of a let down after all the hype.
But Johnnie O. Jackson points out that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Wilkin looked improved of last year and is still relatively early in his career. Jackson’s biggest assessment? Wilkin needs more size in order to compete with the top 3 at an event this size.
Johnnie O. Jackson then moves onto Justin Rodriguez – who he believes has an incredible physique but could improve by bringing up his arms and the separation in his quads. Beyond that he brought in powerful conditioning and grainy physique. He also believes that between the pre-judging and finals – Justin Rodriguez woke up and brought a much more intense and passionate posing routine which helped his placing.
Johnnie O. Jackson then moves onto Steve Kuclo – whom he doesn’t have any direct criticism for. He believes that Kuclo continues to remain consistent and slowly improve his overall package. Jackson thinks that there is no specific area he needs to focus on – rather he simply needs to move to the next step on all of the little details to pull up into a possible number one spot in the future.
William Bonac vs Brandon Curry – Johnnie O. Jackson’s verdict
Now Johnnie O. Jackson dives into the controversy of William Bonac vs Brandon Curry. In Jackson’s personal opinion, he finds that Brandon Curry deserved the win he got. But he also understands that the battle was very, very close. Ultimately, depending on the subjective slant of the judges – it could have gone either way.
In Jackson’s opinion, he thinks that Bonac landing on second has to do with the lack of consistency in his performance over the past two years. Bonac placed sixth at the Mr. Olympia 2021. His physique at the Arnold Classic 2022 was much improved and perhaps one of the best versions of Bonac we’ve seen. In Jackson’s opinion, this inconsistency between shows gave Brandon Curry the edge over Bonac.
As a fair counterpoint to Johnnie O. Jackson’s opinion here – each individual bodybuilding show should be judged in a vacuum. The physique a year ago should not reflect on the physique presented on stage at the Arnold Classic 2022. However, it is also pretty common knowledge that the judges partially base their assessment of an athlete based on how they improved, or fell behind, from their last show. It’s often said that the Mr. Olympia champion, for example, can’t just look the same every year. He still needs to find a way to improve and beat his previous self.
So perhaps Brandon Curry’s consistency swayed the judges to give him the nod. Not all fans might be satisified by this answer. But the reality is that no matter how transparent and objective the sport tries to be – it is still judged by human beings. Subjective opinion will always sway a score in a slightly different direction.

Straight Facts: Is Lemon Myrtle The Most Anabolic Supplement Ever Discovered?
Jerry Brainum shares the straight facts on a new discovery that may prove to be one of the most anabolic natural substances in existence.
Those who are interested in pushing their body to the limits of muscular ability are always trying to find ways to enhance their progress. Some will turn to PEDs for this enhancement, while others will try and stay on the legal side of things and look for approved substances for enhancement. While neither of these can replace hard work in the gym – they can supplement and optimize the results of hard work. A recent scientific study may have just introduced a new natural supplement that could change the game for natural anabolic substances. In our latest episode of Straight Facts, Jerry Brainum breaks down Lemon Myrtle and how it can optimize muscle hypertrophy.
Science is evolving every single day – and this has had a drastic affect on bodybuilding and fitness. If you were to compare the methods and knowledge of bodybuilders in the 70s vs today – you would see major differences. This, in part, explains why physiques are so much more massive than the golden era. For those not deeply embedded in bodybuilding, you can also see this difference in how nutrition and a healthy diet is directed vs nutrition in the 1950s, for example.
Of course, science is not only evolving it is also changing. Some things that were once seen as beneficial turns out to be false with further long term studies. So the following information that Jerry Brainum presents should be taken with a grain of salt – as it is a new study that can have big implications for the supplement and bodybuilding world.
This week, Jerry Brainum breaks down a recent study that explores the substance Lemon Myrtle. This is a plant whose compound might make it the most anabolic natural substance in existence. As Brainum explains, Lemon Myrtle might be the first natural substance to directly activate satellite cells – which are an instrumental part of hypertrophy.
How does muscle hypertrophy work?
Before jumping into this new substance, Jerry Brainum recaps how muscle hypotrophy works. Brainum covered muscle hypertrophy in more detail in a separate earlier episode of Straight Facts – which you can watch here. But as a brief rundown – here’s the key details.
Within muscle fibers, there are something known as satellite cells. These cells essentially just sit around doing nothing, until your muscle fibers are damaged. Once this happens, your satellite cells begin work on repairing your muscle. This act of repair also restores your muscle with larger fibers than before – thus leading to increased strength and size.
It should be noted that there is some debate on how essential satellite cells are to muscle hypertrophy and repair. A minority group of scientists believe that they might have little to do with the process. But as of today, majority fall more in favor with satellite cells being vastly important in the process – using peer reviewed studies to back it up.
The Lemon Myrtle Study: Older age, sarcapenia, and satellite cells
Sow how did lemon myrtle become discovered as a powerful supplement for muscle hypertrophy? Jerry Brainum explains that a recent study was done to find natural substances to aid in reducing sarcapenia.
What is sarcapenia? It’s a disorder that usually happens in adults 60 years and older. It’s a natural occurrence of the human body’s satellite cells dying off as we reach elderly age. This eventually leads to your muscles atrophying at a faster rate. It’s the reason why light resistance training is so important in older age – as this helps prevent and slow this process down.
Jerry Brainum asserts that many elderly folks who find themselves in assisted living homes are not due to mental disorders, but more so from frailty due to sarcapenia. You all know the “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” commercials. This is essentially the end results of sarcapenia, requiring assisted living help for movement and support.
In an attempt to find natural substances that aid in preventing or slowing sarcapenia, scientists discovered that Lemon Myrtle does something that no other natural substance has been able to do – it directly activates satellite cells. This led the study to conclude it can be helpful as a supplement for elderly folk to prevent frailty.
But Jerry Brainum believes that Lemon Myrtle can also be used by any adult to help activate satellite cells and improve muscle hypertrophy. It can, essentially, be the most effective natural anabolic supplement in existence.
The studies are new and have not yet been tested on human subjects (only in vitro and also in mice). So it remains to be seen in the long term just how much of a game changer (or not) the substance can be. However, Jerry Brainum states that he wouldn’t be shocked to start seeing Lemon Myrtle as a supplement or as an ingredient in anabolic supplement blends.
Wrap Up
As science constantly evolves, so too do our options in bodybuilding for further optimization of training and nutrition. This allows athletes to push the boundaries even further than before. While Lemon Mrytle will not replace anabolic steroids or other PEDs – it can be a vital and game changing natural supplement in the world of fitness. You can watch Jerry Brainum break it down in complete detail by watching our latest episode of Straight Facts above.
Andrea Shaw: My Personal Goal Is To Win 11 Ms. Olympia Titles
[embedded content]
Andrea Shaw aims to beat the world record for most Ms. Olympia wins
Before the Ms. Olympia temporarily disappeared for about six years, Iris Kyle was the reigning champion. To this day, she is still the world record holder not only for most Ms. Olympia wins – but most Olympia wins by any athlete in any division ever. Since the return of Ms. Olympia two years ago, Iris Kyle has yet to make a return to reclaim her title for various reasons. As of now it’s unclear if she will officially return moving forward. But the current champion, Andrea Shaw, hopes to become the new world record holder. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Andrea Shaw details how and why she wants to earn 11 Ms. Olympia titles.
Andrea Shaw came out swinging upon the return of the Ms. Olympia competition two years ago. She has held dominion over Women’s Bodybuilding for two years now – and is the current reigning champion. During our recent video interview, we asked what her long term goals are. How long does she want to compete and how will she handle her physique once she retires? It seems like retirement won’t be coming any time soon though – as she proclaimed that she wants to win 11 total Ms. Olympia title by the end of her pro career.
The number 11 is not random, it’s the amount of wins she needs to become the new world record holder. Iris Kyle, the previous Ms. Olympia champion, currently holds the record at ten wins. This is also the most Olympia titles won by any athlete regardless of division. Shaw is ready to change that fact – we just may need to wait until 2030 for that to happen.
That’s a long way off. And Andrea Shaw is not delusional about the fact a lot can change between now and then. That’s why she has a very realistic rule she is living by in terms of achieving her goal.
“I’m very much aware of the fact that, you know, you still need to be in a good place mentally with competing. You still need to be a good place physically when competing,” Andrea Shaw states in our interview. She continues:
“My caveat to that is if I still feel good about it physically and mentally, I would like to go after eleven. But at any given point I feel as though it’s not there, I’m not the one to force that.”
Andrea Shaw makes a good point here. She cannot predict where her head or body will be at five or more years from now. She certainly has the hunger and drive to become a world record champion – but also realizes that life can change those goals and drive in unexpected ways. The most important thing for her is mental and physical stability. If the goal becomes a hinderance rather than a productive goal – she may change tactics.
Andrea Shaw goes on to use Dexter Jackson as an example. Jackson is notoriously known for his extremely successful and long lasting career. He is the most decorated pro bodybuilder of all time – and many had counted him out multiple times throughout his career as he aged. He ended up not retiring until after 50 years old.
Andrea Shaw points out that his longevity came down to how he planned each and every bodybuilding prep. He did not go hardcore like some other bodybuilder, which would lead to a burnout (even if it was after a very successful run). Shaw wants to follow this method. She wants to be the best and perhaps even become a world record holder – but only if it’s right for her overall happiness and stability.
You can watch Andrea Shaw talk in more detail not only about her goal of 11 Ms. Olympia wins – but also her plans for after retirement. Catch it all in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above.

Jim Stoppani answers: How does coffee and alcohol affect your general fitness and health? And should pro bodybuilders keep them in their diets?
Alcohol and coffee can be considered two of the biggest vices in the modern world. They are so embedded into culture that no one bats an eye to the affects of both when taken to extremes. For those that are health conscious and especially those who want to be elite bodybuilders – can these two products say in a healthy diet? We turned to exercise physiologist Jim Stoppani for a full explainer guide on the pros and cons of keeping coffee and alcohol in your diet.
For the average adult, coffee and alcohol consumption is a casual and regular occurrence. Of course, so long as it is in moderation. Chronic diseases such as alcoholism are a consistent problem in many countries – certainly in the United States. But beyond the extreme side of substance abuse, are there long term dangers from casual alcohol and coffee consumption? Jim Stoppani believes that these substances are not as taboo as some alarmists would have you believe.
Pros & Cons of Coffee
During our video interview, Vlad Yudin mentions how there are those who warn of coffee addiction and the negative effects this can have on a person. Yet many athletes and bodybuilders will use coffee as a form of natural pre-workout. A way to boost energy for that next training session. Should coffee be cut from a health conscious person’s diet? Is coffee and caffeine bad for your health?
“I say good,” Jim Stoppani comments during the conversation. Of course, he mentions, it will always depend on the individual person and their personal goal. Overall, there are proven health benefits to drinking coffee (and consuming caffeine in general). Coffee itself can be an antioxidant. And caffeine has been proven to help lessen cognitive decline throughout the day.
Studies also show that smaller doses more frequently throughout the day fairs better than big doses once or twice a day. So for those who pound down morning coffee – perhaps an alternate habit could be more optimal.
Jim Stoppani doesn’t like to demonize caffeine. It won’t kill you and it wont kill your gains. However, drinking coffee at too young an age can be more dangerous. Stoppani explains that consuming regular amounts of caffeine under the age of 18 has a direct effect on the development of the brain. It can change your brain connections.
Another reason you might not want to have coffee or caffeine in your diet is down to personal situations. If you have cardiovascular or heart health issues – avoiding caffeine is a better choice. And those who suffer chronic anxiety might find that caffeine only raises their anxiety throughout the day.
Pros & Cons of Alcohol
The obvious big danger about alcohol is abuse. It can be addictive and also cause serious damage to your liver and heart with long term abuse. Also binge drinking can lead to dangerous situations when your cognitive abilities start to blur.
However, beyond those very real and serious risks with long term abuse – Jim Stoppani sees no issue with alcohol in a fit person’s diet. It’s completely possible to remain health and fit while also enjoying the occasional drink.
Jim Stoppani explains that at the end of the day it’s all about your macros. If you are a elite bodybuilder looking to have 3% body fat and dominate on stage – then maybe it’s best to avoid alcohol for the majority of your career. But for the larger fitness community at large – it all depends on your personal goals. Alcohol calories certainly add up if you’re not careful.
Ultimately, Jim Stoppani wants to remind those watching that you only live once. “What’s the point of being fit?” Stoppani rhetorically asks. “So we can live longer and enjoy life!”
Wrap Up
At the end of the day, Jim Stoppani explains that neither coffee or alcohol are inherently unhealthy for you. Unlike, let’s say, smoking a cigarette, one drink will not damage your body. It’s all about moderation and considering your personal goals. Know your own health records. Know your own habits. Keep them under control.
Stoppani believes you can be not only health but very physically fit while also enjoying coffee and alcohol. You can watch Jim Stoppani explain in full detail by watching our latest GI Exclusive video segment above.
Dr. Testosterone Answers: Do Bigger Physiques Always Mean More PED Use?
[embedded content]
Dr. Testosterone discusses the amount of PEDs used in bodybuilding today – and if bigger size always means more drugs.
While it’s not openly discussed by untested leagues or active pro athletes, it’s a common understanding that PED use is common in the sport. The concept of mass monsters, to many, seem only possible by taking PEDs such as steroids. But with many different divisions and physique sizes across the sport – do bigger physiques always mean more PED use? In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Dr. Testosterone explains why the biggest Men’s Open bodybuilder might not always be use the most PEDs.
The common argument that PED use is common in untested bodybuilding leagues comes down to a simple comparison. If you look at a natural bodybuilding league’s best athletes vs an untested league’s best athletes – the size difference is astronomical. Of course, this also has created a common perception about PED use in bodybuilding. The bigger the mass monster, the more PEDs used. But is that always true?
Dr. Testosterone answers this very question during our video conversation. He admits that in general, this is true. A Men’s Physique bodybuilder would need less drugs to obtain the comparatively smaller size of their division. It would essentially be a waste for a Men’s Physique athlete to take as many steroids as a Men’s Open competitor. That being said, this is just a broad stroke statement. Exceptions always exist.
For example, genetics play a huge role in the capability of a bodybuilder. Regardless of drug use, some individuals need to work harder than others to build up muscle size. Dr. Testosterone uses Lee Haney and Rich Gaspari as an example. Lee Haney can grow to an impressive size very quickly with less effort than a bodybuilder like Rich Gapsari. That’s not to say that Haney put in no effort. It just means that his extremely hard effort goes a longer way.
So if you add PEDs into the mix – the same rules apply. It’s possible for the biggest mass monster on stage to be using less drugs than a smaller bodybuilder standing next to him. This is largely due to genetics and what each individual needs to reach their goals. How much work is put into training also affects this as well. While most elite pro bodybuilders certainly train their asses off – there is still variety in work ethic. It’s unavoidable.
So what’s the bottom line? Perhaps it’s less helpful to comment on drug use based on someone’s size. Just because a bodybuilder is the biggest mass monster on the planet doesn’t meant they are a steroid junkie. The fact of the matter is – as audience members watching, we have no clue what the truth is behind the physique. It’s all speculation.
