Injuries are a disheartening yet very normal part of life, with some cases being more severe than others. For top athletes, it can mean the end of a career or several months sidelined. Top women’s CrossFit competitor Jamie Simmonds of New Zealand was unfortunate enough to have experienced a shoulder injury recently that will keep her out of the 2021 CrossFit qualification season.

The 29-year old veteran has turned in several impressive performances throughout her career. She placed first in the 2016 CrossFit Open, 3rd at 2016 CrossFit Games for team competition (team CrossFit Yas), and third at the 2019 CrossFit Games as an individual. Not to mention, she’s a multiple-time national champion.

Simmonds started off strong with CrossFit Open workouts 21.1 and 21.2, finishing 17th (11:59) and 9th (9:09) in the world respectively. However, she could not submit times for Open workouts 21.3 and 21.4 due to her injury and therefore, is not eligible to compete in the quarterfinals.

Here’s the Instagram post where she shared the unfortunate news.

Last week a training injury absolutely WHHAUPED me in the face. After a week of hoping, many conversations & a lot of recovery protocols – it came to Monday but me and my shoulder were not up to par – Putting an early end to my season. ?

These things happen, it is what it is and it’s all part of the game ?. Well done to those who completed the Open, be proud, take a little break then hit back hard when you’re ready ? So cool to see the Crossfit community coming together over the last 3 weeks ?

Now time to knuckle down , do the boring stuff & bullet proof this body ? … again…

One day at a time. I am ready for some solid character building ? @edwods @ellsimmo93

On a positive note … number 1 operations manager coming right up for @ellsimmo93 through the 2021 @crossfitgames season?

Simmonds has so far received a lot of support from fellow competitors including Iceland’s Sara Sigmundsdottir who also had to pull out of the 2021 season due to a ruptured ACL

4x Fittest in France Willy Georges was also among the most recent competitors to withdraw because of a shoulder injury.
