OK I'm in a small hamlet of less than 30K population. But one just opened up in a much larger city about 40 miles away. I was in that city the other day and drove past about 8:30 PM Friday. I gotta tell you if I didn't know what I know about this whole fitness thing, I'd be impressed. Huge window, the snack bar in front, there were about 10 people sitting there (actually more at the lounge than I could see working out, no shocker) and of course the purple and yellow clean as a whistle equipment, bright lights etc.

All for $10 a month. How the hell do I compete w/that? I know the whole fluff shit is just that and no one really works out, but dammit 24 hrs too. My gym is smaller, I have great Cybex machines and top of the line Woodway treadmills and other cardio plus sauna and steam room but all my free weights are hard core black with black rubber mats. Nothing fancy just no BS stuff

If PF ever moved into my market, I'd be screwed (along with the YM and the other places in town). I was chatting with Ric Drasin the other day and he's a spokesman for World Gym and he said that WG has been buying up PF lately.

I was checking on their FB page and these judgmental pricks actually like casing on hard cores and mocking guys like us. Total BS

What other industry pedalizes the C half achievers and demonizes the A students??

For a gym like yours to be successful, you need to market to the more "hardcore" crowd. Planet fitness is only supported by girls and guys who can only lift girly weight. The have no barbells, no power racks, nothing free weight, and dumbbells only up to 75 lbs. The only thing you could use to get strong on that they have are the smith machines and leg press. Exploit those weaknesses.

So basically I'm saying make your gym the complete opposite of a PF. Loud music, iron plates clanking, and hopefully filled with angry meatheads. :)

Yea I agree with what you all say, hoping theres enough hard cores in this cow town to make it work. Anyone know of a PF in a city of 25,000? I think they are in larger markets but maybe I'm wrong. I guess I shouldnt worry about it as it may not ever happen. As much as I hate to say this, miost my members are soft cores....like they say, you can pick your nose but you cant pick your relatives (or your members). In the AM its almost all the 70 and over crowd. But they butter my bread and although they are clueless, they are the nicest folks.

Screw the no judgement place

Agreed! Not sure what if any advertising you do but I would honest to GOD make it a point for my ad to be in exact opposition to their ads! As well as somehow crack on their crowd and type of members and not just for principal but mainly because I think a lot of people ate looking for a serious hardcore gym!

"cant we all just get along"

"i have a dream"

i think most planet fitness members are new to working out or just getting back into it like i was 5 years ago. yes they may take a few customers from some places but then those getting back into like me might eventually want to join a hardcore gym which might not have ever happened if not for PF

I agree but the problem is there seem to be less and less meatheads like us around. People dont want to try hard. they
want gain without pain. Mabey a good add would be, " When you get tired of eating donuts and not making gains, and are
ready to get serious about looking better, come see us" I am a CHEAP bastard, but I dont mind spending more for a real
gym run by a real owner who is serious. Planet fitness in not far from me but I love my little mom and pop (both former
competieive bodybuilders) gym that has everything I need. I dont mind paying to keep this REAL gym open.

That place is a joke. I wouldn't go there even if I had a free membership! Grunting alarm, no deadlifts or squat racks?? ha

Hahah lets get a meathead flash mob together. We can go to PF and fuck shit up. Grunt and leave gallon jugs everywhere.
