World may be forced to go vegetarian by 2050, scientists say.

By the year 2050, you may be forced to become a vegetarian. That is, if Sweden's water scientists are to be believed.

According to the Stockholm International Water Institute, "There will not be enough water available on current croplands to produce food for the expected 9 billion population in 2050 if we follow current trends and changes towards diets common in western nations."

Humans now derive about 20 percent of their daily protein intake from animal-based products, reports London's Guardian. But a new report published by the institute says the world's population will have to cut that figure to 5 percent by 2050 to accommodate the planet's "considerable regional water deficits."

Why not just produce more food?

"Nine hundred million people already go hungry and 2 billion people are malnourished in spite of the fact that per capita food production continues to increase," the report said. "With 70% of all available water being in agriculture, growing more food to feed an additional 2 billion people by 2050 will place greater pressure on available water.

So vegetarianism, the scientists say, is one option to combat the water shortage.

"A move towards vegetarian diets could help free up large portions of arable land to human food production," Orion Jones wrote on BigThink.com. "A third of current farmland is used to grow crops that feed animals. Additionally 'animal protein-rich food consumes five to 10 times more water than a vegetarian diet.'"

The report was released for the start of "Water Week" and the annual world water conference in Stockholm. And while the forecast may sound dire, the world's water situation is already grave.

According to the World Water Council, 1.1 billion people now live without clean drinking water.

And the United States is experiencing its worst drought in a generation, punishing farmers and burning up the nation's corn crop. On July 31, nearly 65 percent of the nation was experiencing drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The drought's been so severe and water levels so low, Midwestern towns that were intentionally submerged decades ago are starting to surface.

I'll become cannibalistic before I become vegetarian. In that respect there will be TONS of meat around!! Lol

And scientist in the 1970's said we'd be in an Ice Age by now and in the 1990's there was Global Warming that was going to flood the Earth by melting the polar ice caps.

There are LOTS of fish in the seas.

Exactly!!!!! I mean look at asians. They live like forever and eat fish and rice like 90% of the time. I fckn love fish so that wouldn't bother me a bit.

Stupidest article I've ever read. We will run out of water??? It falls from the sky, people!

It's not completely stupid. Most if the water that Texas farmers use to water with comes from aquifers and the biggest one in the southeast is expected to be used up by 2025, along with a lot of others across the US. While I do agree with most of the posts on here I do agree tgat we are using up a lot more fresh water than we are retaining from rainfall.

There will be some huge trend coming up to recycle rain water then once this becomes a well known factor. People always get scared into things once it becomes public

I do not believe anything that scientists say anymore. They will say anything there is no truth in them. As long as they get a grant so the can sit there and fiddle arpound they will say what ever the grant giver wants them to say. In plain english, they lie.

Your right and good case in point is we have scientists who were payed to show global warming is real, and they said it is real.

Then a scientific commision was set up to prove global warming is not real and guess what....those scientists say it is not real, lol

So yes its all pointless, every agency across the board just wants funding, same as the war on drugs, that shits a miserable failure and they keep getting money, lmao

Here's what I don't buy into. For years and years nobody gave a damn about BPA (I still don't know or even care to know what it is), but now all of a sudden any sport bottle you find is "BPA Free." So of course you've got these whack jobs who are scared of BPA now and will replace all of their old bottles because of this.

It's a way to make money and to scare people into thinking the gov't is looking out for us when in reality they aren't it's just about money

Haha, so you're saying you have a metal roof and a pool to catch all your water?

Lol.. Shit I gotta change out my cardboard box in a downpour.. We did a huge job for this greenfreak.. 5000 gallon cistern buried underground and all the water was caught and sent to it and he waters the landscape and is mostly for the next apocolypse so he can drink it..
