Diabetes and Bodybuilding

I am in the same exact place you are. I was a diagnosed as a diabetic five years ago at 20. My BGL was 800mg/dl (coma status). I have seen doctors and tried tons of meds ranging from: metforming, gylbryde, jeunvia, lantus, humolog. Not to add the cholorestrol and hypertension meds that accompany. I have been on diet, after diet to control my bgl until I found a doctor in AZ. Right now I am eating almost the same way you described. 10% carbs 35% protein, and 55% fat. The only difference is that I do not consume any starchy carbs. No oatmeal, sweet potatoes, ect. I get all of my carbs from veggies and trace carbs from peanut butter, almonds, and so on. On average I eat 35-60 grams of carbs a day depending on how much PB I eat. This has helped me in controlling my bgl, on average my morning fasting bgl is 100mg/dl. ( we as diabetic, when we sleep, we release more glycogen then a normal person with a proper working pancreas). I no longer feel tired after I eat and I have no drops in my bgl and no use for fast carbs ie: glucose tabs. And to point out free form l-glutamine in 15-20g raises your bgl faster then glucose. If you don't believe me, google it (schoolar google). There are numerous journal articles that prove this.

Now that being said my doctor and I have been utilizing IF once a week to stress the body to use fat as fuel compared to carbs. Durning a IF day I eat in a 6 hour window and only eat 1/4 the normal calories I would eat in a normal day. So, if I eat let's say, 4000 kcal a day on my IF day I would eat 1000kcals no more. With the combination of eating no starchy carbs and using IF once a week my blood work, bgl, energy levels and gains have become normal.

I also want want to state that I have not taken any diabetic medications ie: metformin, humolog, lantus for two years and my bgl is better now, then when I was using the insulin and oral meds.

I hope this helps and if you want more information on what I have gone thew PM me. I know what you are going thur it sucks and is so DAMN frustration dealing with the ups and down using insulin.

hey man , I know your struggle! I have had type one diabetes since I was twelve. I get up at three do cardio fasted bf daily insulin so can burn bodyfat without insulin interferring also this fasted cardio makes me more sensitive to insulin.:have breakfast right after ussually six eggs no carbs. then go to work second meal is tuna or chicken whith spinach lunch is whole baked chicken breast with spinach salad olive oil and balsamic vinagarete on it. then i don eat my next meal till after liftting at gym in evening which I take evening insulin with my whey protein after workout. that way both my insulin spikes are right after exercise so the muscle is more sensitive to insulin than other cells, also that insulin quickly takes from catabolic state to anablic. 30 to 45 min later eat more chickin and spinach, two hrs later lean red meat and broccolli, pre bedtime i eat lowfat cottage cheese whith some equal in it! I seem to be able to gain muscle and lose fat at same time and thats alot its ten times more difficult for diabetic than normal person , so I work harder than everyone else and get better results thsan most!

I have done between 60 and 80 mcg pre workout, no hypo are anything thing. it helped my post workout insulin work better I believe, but never made me go hypo or anything! didnt use for long bc couldnt afford so it was a short run!

Cause I get pretty tired when I pin igf. Maybe I have to eat before I do it I don't know. I gave up trying to use it preworkout. Maybe I could do it pre, pre workout you know before I eat breakfast then eat, then take my preworkout then workout. Cause when I add carbs to my protein which I'm doing now post-workout I have to eat within the hour or I get pretty shaky, sweaty and extremely hungry/irritable. Maybe I will be able to get some government prescribed insulin pretty soon at least.

when a diabetic has high blood glucose levels his testosterone shuts down, causing low T! As for those type two diabeics who are out of shape and over wieght, they usually have low testosterone which is one reason they become insulin resistant! high bodyfat levels lowers testosterone, as your fat cells produce aromatase. So overwieght people usually have low test bc off all that is aromatised and because of high estrogen levels shuts down testosterone! doctors believe that the low test is one of the causes of type 2 diabetes and alot of doctors prescribe testosterone to type 2 diabetics. I am type one I produce no insulin, have been since i was 12 so been living with this and educating myself on it for 22yrs!
