Im wondering about ISP’s.

Im wondering if dial up is more safe.

I couldn’t stand going back to but hear me out for a minute. I remember that part of the reason why people with cable internet get viruses so much is they’re internet connection is always on. Hackers can access your computer anytime of the day through your specific router. This is not only tied to your ip, but also gives up your location.

Now this Is the part im fuzzy on. But, when you use a land line, you have a network of routers that are assigned (temporarily) to. Since your router is used by 50 million other people, the chances of fed finding your location are much more slim.

Am I right or wrong on this???

You can be traced no matter what you're using. The things that make it harder is using a proxy server (especially one out of the country) for your web/e-mail/ftp/whatever connections. Even then someone can still eventually find you if you use the same proxy all the time though it's much harder.

isn't there a way to change you IP address from time to time? I thought that you could do this with your cable modem or on your desktop

Not really. For most setups, your cable modem will be assigned an address out of a specific pool which can be traced, then it delegates one to your PC via DHCP. Macs often can be on their own internal network in which you can assign an IP address, but you're still hooked to the external IP. The only other way to be in the Internet is to have a hard assigned IP address which is directly traceable to you. By sending through a proxy, your traffic requests go to the proxy, and the proxy does all the downloading, etc.--much harder to trace, and some of them are "cloaked," which I won't go into here.

ummmm wow, OK. You obviously know what you're talking about so I don't question it but I'm on a Mac as well and I noticed that the IP on the computer itself changed so maybe that's what I was thinking but the external one stays the same so it makes sense.
