A recent study using abalone therapeutics surgery free balloon system has shown results in improving weigh loss in patients. Approved for use by the F.D.A. in September the obalon balloon system contains a balloon within a capsule and intended for intragastric purposes. Upon reaching the stomach the balloon is filled with a gas via a microcatheter reducing the surrounding area within the stomach thus reducing the amount of food required to reach fullness. Using a double blind study of 387 subjects with a BMI between 30-40, half of the subjects ingested three balloons over the course of 12 weeks. Patients with the obalon balloon system lost nearly 25% more weight than it’s counter part control group and maintained nearly 90% of all weight loss six months after balloon removal endoscopically.
