Training at the East Coast Mecca
By George Touliatos, MD
During my last stop in New York City during my 10-day trip in USA, I had the chance to train at the East Coast Mecca, the legendary Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym located in Syosset, New York. My best friend in America, the muscle attorney Rick Collins, was waiting for me at the Mineola Long Island Railroad station – so I took the subway from Seventh Avenue in Manhattan and we met at the LIRR station and Rick drove me to Bev’s Gym.
Entering the gym, there was a hardcore atmosphere, with old bricks and vintage pictures of the muscle legends. The gym includes a pro shop that features Powerhouse clothing, a posing room, a cardio area, a protein bar and an extensive workout area consisting of a vast variety of training equipment and machines. The vibes were powerful coming from bodybuilders
In the gym, I had the privilege of meeting NPC Head Judge and gym co-owner Steve Weinberger. We took a photo with Rick Collins and I offered Steve a copy of my book. Later, he gave me a Powerhouse T-shirt.
The workout with the muscle attorney was chest, and we used a wide variety of equipment. Totally awesome, and it felt like playing in the playground. Rick has been training there for over two decades and says there’s always new equipment brought in. Later I purchased some cool American RTD protein shakes that we don’t have in Europe. Afterwards, Rick drove me to Manhattan and dropped me off just outside of Macy’s. We said goodbye as good friends. I’m grateful to both Rick and Steve for this experience. It was a dream for every bodybuilder.
